Just heard on Dan Patrick, that Gundy from Ok St, has been offered the head coaching job at Tennessee. Can't see him leaving, but who knows. He is a man, you know.
For just a blink of the eye I thought this was breaking news that the MAN was coming to UT - Texas. I bet TBoone steps up to pay Gundy more $$$ to help him stay home.
He is a great offensive coach and motivator. He has done more with less, and his players are coached UP.
That will suck if Gundy goes to Tennessee. Hoping Pickens has some influence to change things at OSU.
Gundy is just out of Top 10 in salary at Okie St. Salaries And he is coaching at his alma mater And he is the school's winningest coach AND was raised in OK and was OK HS Player of the Year in 1986 And was leading passer in OkSt and Big 8 history AND began his coaching career at OkSt And as somebody mentioned, OkSt has Pickens pockets on their side. Seems his ties to the state of Oklahoma and OkSt are pretty strong. It might take a vacancy at a TOP program that is NOT in a down period to get him out of OK. He is set for life if he stays where he is. I don't imagine there are many schools that could entice him to leave. But you never know. He might be driven by more than money, comfort, fan support, history, etc. Maybe he will need a challenge at some point that is bigger than supplanting OU as the state's best football program.
He would be crazy to leave his alma mater with a top 10 salary for a middle of the road SEC school...
Middle of the Pack SEC is not a permanent position. With the right coach they can be a top 10 national program on a regular basis. Tenn is not Bama, USC, Notre Dame, Ohio State or Texas, but it's in the group that comes right after that.
looks like charlie strong is staying at louisville. seems like tenn would move on to fedora but rumors are that he's going to stay too.
So the HC position at a historic, SEC football program, currently on hard times, goes unfilled after two offers to up and coming coaches at programs with far less history and outside of the SEC. I understand Gundy's position as the HC at his alma mata in his home state. Plus, OSU is putting a decent product on the field. Strong? Maybe the job at Louisville is better, in some ways. There, no one expected him to do as well as he is doing. At Tenn, he would be expected to create results immediately in the SEC. We should heed this and when Mack and the cigars and Belmont decide to do their thing, we better have somone who has already agreed to take over waiting in the wings.
1leggedduck, you nailed it right there. I live in Nashville and the whole U-TN community is in an uproar because they can't get a decent coach now. First Gruden, then Gundy, then Strong, and now Fedora are all out. It's pretty surprising for such a storied program. We definitely don't want that to happen at Texas.
Tennessee is still reeling from the stench of the Lane Kiffin era...their probation was just extended and there are some other reductions in place across at least the next season. So as a result, ANYONE going in there now is hamstrung by the ghosts of idiots past... Would not surprise me if some of the people turning it down now might have been willing to take it a few years down the road if the situation were not what it is now...
