I thought he was a bright young coach. This is a big loss for the Horns IMO. Good luck coach. Never look back.
Glad to hear it. I think he didn't get enough credit for the ou debacle and his play calling was predictable. Tired of the Mickey Mouse nonsense and trickeration. He is as much to blame for this season as anyone, in my opinion. Sounds like another guy busy looking for a job instead of doing the job he was hired to do.
Althought it's a major loss for Texas, congratulations to Harsin. I'm sure he'll do well at Arkie State, and if he does, he'll be in an even better position to become HC at Boise, Texas or elsewhere down the road. And to boot, he's probably smart to escape the dumpster fire that has started to engulf Mack. Now it's time to see what Major can do as a play caller. He's had experience at Syracuse, Alabama, Rice and Texas, so I'm eager to see what he can do (assuming he is not hamstrung by Mack).
Horn, Harsin may not be great, but how would we know when he was most certainly handcuffed by Mac's conservative interference?
Will a new offensive coordinator for 2013 give Mack an automatic extension? This is very clever of Mack -- chase off your coordinators every two years to prolong the rebuilding timeframe!
So Harsin leaves and Diaz stays. That's not what it looked like would happen but par for the course these days. Harsin wanted to run a more wide open offense like he did at Boise State. That so called Micky Mouse stuff was the only thing that worked. The only time that ball control SEC offense Mack wanted worked was against all the terrible defenses we played. We saw what happened against the good defenses like OU, KSU, even TCU. We simply do not have the offensive line to get any push against a real defense. Harsin got out while the getting was good so he could be his own man and coach again.
I like the guy and wish him all the best. Harsin deserved a full head coaching experience. The guy he's replacing just took a head coaching job in the SEC.
He's been a coordinator for 12 years or so, it was time for him to take on head coach. Applewhite should be just fine.
He had turned into Greg Davis...screens, delayed draws, run it up the middle...I'm so happy. This O had creativity for 3-4 games under Harsin, then went full vanilla. Now give it to Major Applewhite...he's ready, he's recruited well, and the "co-__" title is so stupid. If we can only "elevate" Diaz to FIU's greener pastures now.
I wish him well. My first thought upon hearing this was this didn't say much about the UT position he had or our program. Arkie State has some high aspirations wanting to be Boise St someday but hell, they have had what 4 coaches in 4 years... that does not say much about the current situation and promise of that program. I agree with a previous poster(s) that Harsin may have seen some writing on the wall... wanted to escape the shackles and dumpster fire , even if it is a HC gig at a very mediocre program.
I hear Major is indeed expected to fill the position. Don't get me wrong I love Major but this seems like a "comfort" hire to me. Can Major really infuse what this team needs? Can he really be expected to be autonomous enough? There is no enthusiasm around this program. The excitement that Mack's 2011 hires stirred has evaporated and the team looks moribund, again. What's more Mack's new DC still needs to be ****-canned yesterday. Who really thinks that will happen now? It is really a shame Mack did not take a bow after 2010. That was the opportune time to do it...
major has been promoted to OC and darrell wyatt is co-OC. the co-OC title is to give wyatt a pay bump to keep him from looking elsewhere. applewhite will call plays.
I have a good feeling passing this over to Major now. A few years back...no way, But now he has learned a tremendous amount more I'm sure. I also think he will find a way to improve the run even further without losing offensive creativity. Just have a really good feeling about Major taking over at this point in his career.
Harsin's offense did look stagnant and vanilla at times, but if not for his array of play fakes and such we'd have only scored about 6 points on KSU.
I swear, what is amazing is that five years ago the big complaint about Mack was that his coordinators never got hired away (Reese, Davis etc.), so now that he hires good coordinators and they get hired the complaint is 180 degrees opposite. At least be consistent. DKR's famous quote seems applicable, if he walked on water he said his detractors would say that just means that DKR cant swim. Mack just cant win with some fans.
I'm on board with The Major. Has one of the biggest hearts that has played for UT in my lifetime (over 50 years of following UT football). He finds ways to win if Daddy Mack will turn him loose, and he is a hell of a recruiter. This is a win/win deal.
I agree with keeping Major as OC is a good move for several reasons. He's earned it, it gives us some offensive continuity, and we keep one of our best recruiters on staff. In addition, even if we wanted to look outside the program for a new OC, I don't think we'd draw a great hire with everyone believing that Mack will be gone after next year and a new head coach will likely clean house.
It really doens't matter who the OC is; Mack will reel them in. This program will remain a dumpster fire until MB is fired/retired....so only another 5-7 years....wait til next year! (great we're now aggy)
Hu Fan - dumpster fire IS very descriptive - I think the first person I heard use that term was Bill King ("The Balls") on College Football Sirius Radio a few years ago.
I am all for Major. I think he has the fire and smarts to do well, plus I think he is a great recruiter.
