Any chance he would be our defensive coordinator again if Manny Diaz leaves for FIU? Personally I would feel very good about 2013 with Applewhite as OC and Chizik as DC.
I used to be concerned about the idea of a former head ocach as DC - but since young DC's are basically looking for a stepping stone and likely to jump at the first chance, maybe you're better off with someone that has failed as a head coach and is less likely to get an offer in the next 2-3 years.
In his two seasons here he held OU to 12 points and 10 points. I would like a defensive coordinator that can hold OU below 20 points.... though holding them below 50 points would be an improvement at this point.
I'd also prefer Robinson, but I think I rather have the guy from Stanford. He's young, but he obviously knows how to shut down passing games and the spread from his job on Oregon.
"Robinson was hired by Michigan on January 20, 2009 as their defensive coordinator, replacing Scott Shafer. In 2009, Michigan ranked 82nd of 120 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision and 9th of 11 teams in the Big Ten in total defense. In 2010, the Wolverines ranked 110th of 120 teams in FBS and 11th of 11 teams in the Big Ten in total defense. Robinson was fired with head coach Rich Rodriguez and the majority of his staff on January 5, 2011." the link I would much much much rather have Chizik over Greg Robinson. Actually I am surprised anyone would want Greg Robinson back.
Greg Robinson was an outstanding defensive coordinator in Austin. It was clearly the most successful stint in his career. Anyone think maybe being "handcuffed" to Dick Tomey helped him out? Unless we get rejected by the first 20-30 applicants, I'd rather not call Robinson.
Chizik is terrible. I cannot for the life of me understand why people are calling for his return. This has to be a bad joke.
I agree that Robinson was an asset while here, but I can't get over his DC days in Michigan. They were awful. I'd take Chizik over Robinson. I'd be thrilled for Diaz to go.
Chizik was an excellent defensive coordinator. His defense was a huge part of our national championship team. People seem to forget that was one of the best teams ever assembled not just one player. Some coaches are outstanding coordinators and are not cut out to be head coaches. On the other hand i have a hard time believing any coach who wins a national championship is "terrible".

While I agree that our defense was good in 2005, it was predicated on the idea that you could just sit in a Tampa-2 forever and hope that no one tried anything fancy. As luck would have it, no one tried anything fancy on us in 2005 because of our weak schedule (outside tOSU). We had a field day against poor offense after poor offense, and even A&M got the ball rolling when they did easy option crap. USC set the FBS record for most yards in a national championship game loss. Then in 2006, while he was gallivanting with prospective job opportunities, he dropped the ball in several games. I truly just don't want him back based on this alone, not even considering his 2012 job lack of success. There are other guys out there who would be better than either Manny or Gene.
Based on the guy's recent history, why would anyone want him? Aggy racked up 63 points against Auburn while pulling Johnny Football early in the third quarter. They could have scored over a 100 points if they wanted to. Seriously, get a clue.
Hpslugga's synopsis is pretty good. I was reminded of the famous ChrisApplewhite post that slugga and others like to reference when watching the Ark game. My brother in law was sitting next to me, and he's relatively new to football superfandom. He asked "Why do we never move around on defense pre-snap? Everybody else does, but we just line up the same way every time and never do anything different?" Chizik imposed that mentality on Ted Roof, who isn't a superstar coordinator, but is a solid one, and BVG, who is, in fact, a superstar (or has been everywhere else). More than that, though, he coached pussitude into all the players on the defense. The first 2 years, Tracy Rocker coached a veteran group on the DL (which included Fairley and several other upperclassmen who were good enough to be solid SEC players), so they weren't ******* in '09 and '10, but the rest of the D was. Once Rocker went to the Titans, and those guys graduated, the DL became ******* too. Even guys who weren't, like Corey Lemonier, have regressed. Workouts became optional; practices became less physical, and the team became soft. Auburn has had bad teams in the past. They've had talented but poorly coached teams ('80). They've had untalented but well coached teams ('08). They';ve had reasonably talented, well coached, but unlucky defenses ('98). But we've NEVER been soft. We've NEVER been a team of *******. Until Gene Chizik came to town, that is. As an aside, Scot Loeffler, Malzahn's replacement on the offensive side, said that it was the most disorganized clusterfuck he'd ever been around. He said he asked for recruiting territories, and was told just to look up guys on rivals that looked good, and give them a call. If Texas fans want Chizik back, it should be only because you want to hasten the demise of Mack Brown.
Chizik, Toomey, Robison....joined at the hip, each earning $2M plus....let's give that a try... ...anything at this point...!!!
