When we were rolling, 2004-2009, our offense wasn't a problem. That's why I was stunned and amazed that Mack wanted to shitcan the whole thing and start playing smashmouth football. Now we're going back to where we were 3 years ago, whoopie! Mack took a long, well paid, hiatus after the loss to Bama. Unfortunately, he took the UT football program with him. Now, he says, "trust me, I'm motivated again". Sadly, there's a new sheriff in town and Mack is Mr Irrelevant.
Clean, are your referring to MA? The link is just more evidence Mack is continually trying to step back into the ring..he just doesn't have the touch and he's not in shape for this fight anymore. I appreciate all he's done - even allowing for a mulligan for the 2010 season. It appears he's attempted to make multiple major strategic changes to his football philosophy and it's taken a toll on the program, our players, staff, and recruiting. I think he's got a great position somewhere in the athletic program, although not as head coach
It is only because I have read his bio that I can believe Mack Brown's coaching experience is on the offensive side of the ball.
Mack says the up tempo will also have a power run component. Like Okla. State. Gundy is a dynamic, creative, motivating young coach. Our coach is doing well to look at what Gundy has done with his talent.
I don't think this is that big of a deal. Two years ago, we thought we would have a healthy combo of Bergeron and Malcolm Brown, and a slower, pass-first quarterback in Gilbert. Between injuries, disappointments, and the expected emergence of Jonathan Gray, I think the experiment being called off early is a smart adjustment.
The only thing Mack and "Power Run" have in common is the path Mack blazes to the bathroom when he has an upset stomach.
How about Mack coming out and saying TX is going to stop the run and make teams one dimensional. The certainly needs an upgrade but the D is flat out awful.
Unques prist, Bingo!! Last season's defense was one of the worst in Texas football history. The personnel is here for a top 10 defense. If Diaz can't put a powerhouse D on the field then next season will be marked by losses to teams we should not lose to.
I am excited about this - if true, this is good news. This could truly be a very dynamic component to make the current O take off. As was pointed out, the O was successful 2005-2009 and IMO we have the O persnnel now to run that type of up tempo offense, with a power running game factor. Spring training will tell us if this truly is the direction MB is taking the team.
I'm all for it as I never was behind junking the old offense that was working quite well. We tried to copy the Alabama offensive style because we lost a title to them. Most around here know if our QB had stayed in the game, our offensive philosophy would have taken the title that night. There was no need to panic after that unfortunate loss. So now we are headed back where we belong, albeit with more commitment to the run. Which is what I felt the old offense missed some. Just more running commitment, not a different offense. The problem I do have here with Mack is the reactive nature to what we do on offense these days. Be a man, claim your own identity, and stick to it. Sure you can tweak and turn it as the game evolves. But for Christ's sake, stop telling the world we are playing follow the leader every 3 years. Sounds like we are waiting around to jump on the newest fad bandwagon like we don't have our own identity or own way of skinning the cat. We are Texas, act like it, Mack. Or at least let Major answer these questions with his conviction about his style of offense.
up tempo makes sense to me. to me you should slow down the tempo once you are ahead by a couple of scores but not in the early stages of a game. this will help instill that attack mentality. as far as defense: Oregon st - 297 yards kstate - 362 yards TCU - 300 yards ISU - 277 yards TT - 441 yards KU - 273 yards BU - 525 yards OU - 677 yards WV - 460 yards OSU - 576 yards ole miss - 399 yards NM - 241 yards Wyoming - 345 yards 6 games gave up 400 or more yards. gave up less than that 5 of last 6 games. Texas won 4 games by 6 points or less. big diff from 11 to 12 was the yards and points given up.
I believe Tempo should be something that changes, at times we are slow and at times up tempo and in between. Keep the defense off balance, never sure if we are going no huddle or huddle.
The problem last year was the defense not the offense. Texas was an average defense away from an 11-2 record and if the 2011 defense had showed up in 2012 last year could have been amazing. The tweaks to the offense are interesting but I want to hear how the defense will improve (though I guess after the worst defense in school history, you only can improve, I hope).
I think we can all agree that the fundamentals on defense need to be vastly improved. Assignements, I am not sure about, I don't think Edmunds and the LB crew were either properly coached or overcoached or undercoached. We lost alot of expericence from 2011 and then Hicks goes down on top of that.........not making excuses just the two glaring issues that I saw in 2012, Fundamentals and LB play or assignements.
I thought this thread was going to be about Sally substituting Dr. Pepper for Lemonade and maybe throwing in some Thin Mints with the Choco-Chip cookies.
Heard Mack say we would be in 3 and 4 WR sets a lot now...yet in other sentences that we will be in same offense as before but faster. I don't recall a ton of 3 and 4 WR sets lately. Some, yes...but that's not how he phrased it in this recruit video.
IMO some of the history of / problems with the D in 2012: 1. Huge loss of leadership & skill that Sam Acho and Keenan Robinson brought to the D in 2011. 2. Hicks took on the role of the leader / QB of the D 3. The D played pretty well until Hicks went out @ Ole Miss 4. It seemed Diaz did not have a suitable trained backup to Hicks 5. Edmonds although talented was not prepared to take on the QB of the D role... really, nor was anyone else 6. The play of the D quickly went downhill after Hicks went out 7. LB's were frequently out of position, took poor angles, made a bad decison on assignment(s), etc. 8. Vacarro tried to help, take a leadership role, cover for others like #6 but he was then was not able to do his job many times. 9. Several player,s I won't mention, did not tackle / tackle properly and did not do their jobs. Benching them would have brought in green, inxperiened backups that might have executed worse 10.. Add your own problem here:__________________________
That Alabama game really got to his head. He could not just realize that he just simply lost a starting College Hall of Fame Quarterback on the 7th play and while not prepared for it, no need to freeze up, and then after the game no need to try and reinvent everything. Ironically, if he and Davis had pulled Gilbert and offense aside and said, "Listen, with no prep time for this kind of situation, our best bet is to just get loose and let it all hang out. The training wheels are off Garrett, go play and have fun, and let's shock the hell outta everyone. Worse thing that can happen is we lose the game. But let's not lose the whole program and the rest of Longhorn football. Let's play Texas football!!" But no, they tightened up, played safe with Garrett, hobbled through the first half and then called the bonehead play of the century seconds before the half ended. Afterwards Mack overdid letting Alabama get into his psyche. Four years later Alabama has three of the last four titles (including that one) and recruited this very season to handle the kind of offense Mack got away from -- and that A&M has developed to the point that in their first year in the SEC they beat Alabama on the road. How's that for mis-reading the tea leaves!
Cracking up at this from MB. Typical. I swear, Texas fans want so badly to be good again that anything is believable and cause for hope. MB is a master at generating interest in the off season. Does it not seem ironic to anyone that MB now announces an up tempo style and we had an OC for 2 years whose career was built on an up tempo spread attack that Texas never used? Now our OC is going to get us to go up tempo and has virtually no coaching experience with an up tempo offense It is comedy hour. MB will say anything to get folks to believe again. I think up tempo might work great. But I would damn sure hire an OC that has run it successfully before as, god knows, the head coach has no experience with it. Stupidity.
