Hmm. The article was updated about 5 minutes ago.

He's still on their 75-man roster on the GB website and other sources. Maybe it's wishful thinking from NFL.com's end? Trying to prognosticate the cuts? I can't imagine BJ Coleman earned the backup job, although VY wasn't awesomely productive in the last outing.

Coleman was 14/34 passing in the preseason, and 2/7 with an INT in game 4...*sigh*

    This is kind of ridiculous.

    Vince was 26/49, 1 TD, 0 INT
He got sacked twice in game 4, but made several defenders look really bad on runs against Seattle.

Vince may not be a superstar, but he's got to be miles ahead of Coleman. This move seems really bizarre. I'm disappointed for Vince.

This is really surprising. Here we were pretty certain that Vince had the Packers' roster made and Colt was getting released/traded by SF and it turns out just the opposite.

I will be even more surprised if Coleman is on the opening day active roster. I bet GB gets a backup off the wire, but I don't see anyone out there with Vince's ability.

Coleman looked plenty good in the other games. I guess he showed enough to think he could run their system better than VY could if Rogers were to go down.

they can always resign him too right away if he's around.

Backup QBs are underrated. A few years ago, a QB name of Bledsoe went down and was replaced by.... Tom Brady.

The rest is history. What if they had settled on something far less than a Tom Brady? They just let Tebow go... what if they now picked up Young?! Would that be a hoot!

Nothing wrong with having a near-capable started as backup given the hits dished out these days.

Is money that tight that teams can't carry near-starters as backups? VY started a lot of games and has a sizable winning percentage.

He'll get picked up under different salary arrangements I expect. Would the Pack be prevented from re-tacking him and then changing the money?

Coleman was 2/7 passing in 3 of the 4 preseason games, and then 8/13 for 86 yards and 1TD against the Rams. This was game 2.

In game 4 Coleman was 2/7 for 19 yards and an INT.
WE'VE SEEN ENOUGH! CONGRATULATIONS YOU WON THE 2ND TEAM QB SPOT WITH THAT STELLAR PERFORMANCE!

Maybe they decided both stunk, and Coleman was cheaper. Would VY not agree to take less pay or something?!?

VY had already signed for approximately the league minimum for a veteran with his number of years of experience, so it wasn't the money.

I'm sure there's a team out there that can use him as a backup. [IMG] [IMG]

An old player with no legs vs a younger player who can still move? Im not seeing the reasoning here.

Still doesn't make much sense to me. I can see him not being in anyone plans to compete for a starting job, but to not even make it as a second or third? There are so many guys in the league as backups who have never done a thing to think they can win a game and here's a guy who has won games and has what many don't, the ability to move the ball with his legs.

Green Bay is especially puzzling. They have no running game to speak of, their best O-lineman off a pretty poor OL was injured and won't play a snap this year and they are ready to go put Seneca Wallace or that other scrub out there if Rodgers is injured?

I'm not sure there is another team out there whose fortunes are tide this tightly to the health of a single player. They might be in trouble if there defense isn't a damn sight better than last year or if Rodgers health is anything less than perfect this year.

I think part of the "we don't want him for a backup" crowd is concerned that if he DOES manage to work his way into playing time, be it from injury or whatever else, then the management is going to have to pay him more based on his starting experience, RoY and Pro Bowls. It's a lot easier to pick up a crappy guy, ride him for a down year if something bad happens to your starter, and then go back to the old guy the next season.

I think it just boils down to teams wanting to win and going with who they feel can do it all things considered. They weigh risks involved and other factors and go with that. I don't think at the end of the day if a team felt a backup would be good enough to not lose them a playoff game or more they'd let salary get in the way. Especially one like VY who does not command all that much when you break it down. It has to be comparable to that of Seneca Wallace or other QB's with as much if not more playing time.

Maybe some financial issues at smaller teams but one as prestigious and as much on the line year in and year out as the Packers? I just don't see it.

Somebody on the radio in Houston was saying that he really struggled to learn the playbook in GB and Buffalo.

It appears that he's just not used to struggling and working through that. It's unfortunate but he's got a degree from the University of Texas, so he should be just fine.

As I noted in a post above, VY signed with the Packers for the minimum salary permitted by the collective bargaining agreement for a veteran with his number of years of experience. It was a bit more than 700K. Money was not the reason they cut him.

There are some really bad QBs in the league and some shouldn't even be in the league. Especially with the way QBs are evolving it is baffling that he's not even on a roster. When VY ran the ball at GB the crowd was loud and really into it. Big mistake by GB.
