Offense: res ipsa loquitur, and it's really the same stuff from last week minus the flood of turnovers. Defense: res ipsa loquitur, and it's actually the exact opposite stuff from last week. Last week it was an efficient passing performance by NMSU, this week it was an earth-shattering rushing performance by a team that was 64th in the country in rushing yards per game last season. Special Teams: Looks better than it really was. Penalties happened more than once, kick coverage only got theirs because of a really stupid block in the back penalty BYU had on a long return, etc.
The defense found still new levels of suckitude; the offense sucked, the special teams sucked, the coaches sucked, the game plan sucked, the conditioning sucked and well other than that everything was great.
I guess my question is, after last night's abortion, is there anyone out there that truly wants to rationalize this and come up with a reasonable solution that involves maintaining the current staff? I'd like to hear the honest explanations about how the storm delay ruined our mojo, or how losing Daje changes everything in a gameplan, or how Manny was preparing for the BYU that played against UVA and not a team that could actually move the ball. Can anyone really believe this? Does Deloss believe this?
Most disappointing to me, for sure, was the defense (but the offense didn't make me real pleased either). I assume we played most everyone who we thought was capable, and the results were the same. So not only did we ascertain that we had eleven who were inept, but actually there are twenty-two. And this after we have been told so many times recently that they were pretty good. Tackling is something that ought to be learned in the 6th grade, and should be a pretty easy evaluation when recruiting processes start. You either do it or don't, but I ain't believing it's a talent that is forgotten. Offense did not cost us the game, although the O-line was close. And to have the same kid get called for roughing the kicker and then tackle a return man who didn't have the ball, well, I hate to say it but this smacks of coaching shortcoming. They were better than us, and I don't care what it said "on paper" or elsewhere. I'm not sure recovery is possible, and this makes me sad.
The excuses that our team is young, inexperienced, not of sufficient talent, etc. are a joke. Our players are on the short list of the worst coached and most unprepared players in the country. The expression that football is a team sport was illustrated last night. It does not matter how much talent you have, if the players are unprepared, and poorly coached, they will play like our team did last night. The ineptitude of our defensive line and offensive lines make evaluating the overall team nearly impossible.
I heard one of the players blaming the players. He said something along the lines of the fact that every play that Diaz calls is designed to stop any play. They just weren't executing, not containing, poor angles, etc. I don't know how true it all is. They suck, no doubt. The offense is piss poor, too. 3 3-and-outs to start. Can't convert 3rd and 2, 3rd and 3, etc. The play calling was no better than it has been for years. Like him or not, Millen had a good point about calling QB runs late in the game. Piss poor play calling. The fact that Major had no plan of what to do when DJ got injured speaks volumes. He basically admitted that after the game. He was shrugging his shoulders about how it's so difficult to run packages when a guy gets hurt. With the talent available to him, we should be able to plug someone in and make it work. Other programs do it all the time, usually when playing Texas. The entire coaching staff needs to go. Based on Mack's response to a question on whether Diaz is the guy for the future, sounds like he may be gone real quick. Mack basically said he needs to watch the video. Didn't do the usual Mack-speak.
These players are coming out of HS knowing how to tackle, etc . . . They nosedive when they get here. Poor coaching and scheme. Gotta be frustrating.
HP, or others with more football knowledge, how was Manny able to field such a successful defense his first year? I can't for the life of me figure that one out.
Other than punting, special teams were horrible. What made any of these guys think they have the skills to run the ball 7 yards deep out of the endzone? You aren't that good! Take a knee. Is Diggs the best we have at runt returning? Sad. He's never looked like he belongs back there. Quit trying to be badasses and block punts. You got away with one early in the game (ie didn't get penalized) so you try it again huh? Again, the guys don't have the skillset to do this without getting penalized. It's not worth it. Kick coverage sucked. It wouldn't surprise me if BYU greased their uniforms because tacklers were sliding off like crazy. Special teams outside of Fera gets a D.
HAHAHAHA!!!!! I just laughed my *** of twice in this thread. 1) I couldn't believe HPSLUGGA actually took the time to grade this performance. 2) That gif of the BYU child ripping through Nebraska is hilarious!
It's amazing how we can get beat so bad when the other team is simply running the first play every kid in pop warner learned. Meanwhile, one player on their defense has the ability to make the offense and our offensive coordinator **** their pants and mail it in.
Very concise and to the point addicted. Totally agree. Horn in Chicago. Fire them all except for Duane A. Nobody beats him. That being said, I am still disappointed in Adrian and Mykele since they are some of the poorest tacklers on this team. Our corner play with Duke, Byndom, and Quandre are the very few bright spots on this defense .
