Mack Brown - 'carpetbagger'?

LHN has been promoting a show of 1963's team --- it's really compelling, about the guts of the players and the program at that point.

Never won the MNC before, close a few times, always a bridesmaid.

And then 1963, undefeated, beating the Northeastern presses' darling Navy (after losing earlier to SMU, yeah, the SWC really sucked, ahem) in the Cotton Bowl decisively.

What has my mouth agape is that Mack Brown acts like HE is the reason The University of Texas at Austin football has the reputation it has.

He doesn't understand that The University of Texas, even before DKR, had a really good reputation as a premiere football program (research the win over ND at South Bend in the 1930s). DKR took to program to the highest of levels with 2.5 MNCs with two distinctively different teams.

Texas is the second winningest program of all times by games won, to Michigan, and a few notches down to ND in winning percentage.

Texas didn't get that way by being the North Carolina Tarheels. They beat really good teams including OU, ND, Bama,, etc.

Mack comes in with all his "I love Darrell Royal" smaltz and then when his team is a .500 team he gives smack about "every fan is a coach" ****.

We were great before DKR, greater during/after DKR, and will be great again.

Mack Brown has been a placeholder in the calendar.

I find it interesting that Darrell is the godfather of Texas football while Mack is working to unseat him from that title and Darrell has a son named Mack. ........twilight zone music.........

    What are the odds?

I think the writing is on the wall that it's Mack's
swan song. With the benefit of hindsight it actually
was the 2009 season. He's on his way out and we
all know that so I see need to pile on the man...he
has done some great things for this program and
university and deserves our respect and appreciation
for it. However, he has said things along the lines of
"We created this (expectation of greatness) and now it's on
us to uphold it.". To that I say, no you didn't
Mack, but I do thank you for re-awakening it.

This thread is a great example of how the Mack hate has turned from logical to ludicrous.

DKR was the exception to the rule. Unlike Mack and so many others, he knew when it was time to move on.

Mack Brown has shown nothing but respect for Coach Royal and his legacy and he at least deserves his own respect for that.

I agree with Stat. Some of the things people are saying is pretty ludicrous.

    Blonthang,

Remember that DKR is the only reason that Mack Brown got an interview and the job.

I don't know if its fair to say that asking Mack to move on (against his will) is the same as "Mack Hate". It is easier now to call someone a "hater" if they oppose your viewpoint, rather than defend your own...
Mack did not create Texas Football prowess, but he did significantly add to it, yet there has been a lot of perceived underachievement on the scoreboard in the last 4 years, and now some MB and Deloss supporters are rationalizing keeping them here because the cash flow is so positive.

The "UT Brand" existed before, but it was embellished at a time in college sports history when "monetizing" the brand went thru the roof because college football became such a multi-bazillion dollar business. ( Not exclusively for UT, but we have become exhibit A)

Nearly all great coaches overstay their usefulness--even DKR who got out relatively early--was being pressured to consider moving on in 1976--then look at Tom Landry, Joe Pa, Bowden, etc...the ego that makes them great, keeps them from letting go...

Fans of the game are just frustrated here (and elsewhere) that their desires and hopes are ignored of late, by those who actually make the decisions...

Dana X. Bible didn't have quite the success that DKR did, but he laid the foundation for the program and put Texas on the college football map. I would definitely consider him to be a great coach in his day.

History is is kind. But just looking for facts.
Behind DKR who is the second best coach to ever stand on the sideline at Texas?
It might hurt to answer, but please be honest.

I don't hate Mack, I like him and I think he is the 2nd best coach we ever had. I also defended him up until last year's ou game.

However I think the game has passed him and he needs to hand the program over to a good young coach with intensity.

Most people don't hate Mack. They just see the need for him to pass the torch to a new staff that can "fix" the program. I think even Mack knows that he can't turn it around, but won't admit it yet.

To downplay what Mack has done for this program is ridiculous. Mack has done a good job, just not lately. He has brought Texas to the apex, but unfortunately he has let her fall to the bottom. Nevertheless, he has served this university well.

I don't think I've ever heard Mack taking credit for any success, let alone the national championship win from 2005.

I don't think he tried to take credit for the success of the team but I do think he may have been disappointed that it didn't translate into his name ever being mentioned as a possible coach at the next level. I think he may have felt slighted that so many said that VY, not Mack, was the reason Texas won the national championship. And then it was Colt who led them to the championship game, and once he went out, Mack or his staff had no answer. I think that may have been the reason the next year he decided to install an offense where the quarterback position was "de-emphasized". I think he wanted some credit, like Saban, like Chip Kelly, as someone who could coach, not someone who just happened to find two transcendent quarterbacks.

Akers was 1 fumbled punt away from an NC. Was he a great coach? At least you couldn't run the same play 7 consecutive times down the field against his defenses.

I believe every conversation in the past three years regarding Mack should begin with: the man makes $5m a year.

That said, here, I don't hate Mack. What I hate is that he is still around.

Also, I never blame someone for their own incompetence - we all have some level/s. What I find hard to tolerate is someone who must surely, finally, be aware of their level of incompetence and forges on as if all is well - while a large group of others suffer.

That, and taking in $5m a year while they're at it.

This has been over for some time, and it has and continues to cost us in unnecessary ways. It is time for one old soldier to fade away.

    Hook 'em all,

Actually - you rude jerk - it would make a difference if he made $50K - because that would mean this was a lower level program and the expectations on it and on him would be much less.

At $5m he is paid to be the absolute best - and, regardless of your own personal math, it is overwhelmingly demonstrable that he is not delivering. $5m -- $50K, whichever or wherever the bar of expectations is set, I judge on that level.

It has nothing to do with my pocket. If it did, I would have said so. Your imagination runs much further than your good judgment regarding how fast and loose you rush to strike the keyboard.

Everything I said was reasonable, calm, and true. If you've got a problem with any of that, I'm not real sure how to help you.

the man makes $5m a year. You're welcome.

Pretty silly to believe that the highest salary per year will = highest number of wins per year.

Do you even want Mack here at any salary?

Thank you for your reasonable (sort of) response.

And, again, thanks for putting words in my mouth. If you want to argue with me (advocate the devil), at least address what I actually say.

I did not ask for the highest number of wins. What I want is for the university I've devoted 54 years to not to be embarrassed. And, too, at least as many conference titles as our enemies. Surely, $5m is not too little to ask for that.

No - I do not want Mack here at any salary. And, since I don't get to say how much he's paid, I don't see that as an issue. The issue is - I repeat - at $5m he's not meeting the expectations. Hell, at half that he's not meeting reasonable expectations.

I'm not sure why you're so wound up over the $5m when all I'm saying is that top salary demands top performance, and if you took a vote of the Horn Nation, I think 90% would say that ain't what's going on.
