Gray's fumble?

I never understood why they didn't rule Gray's fumble at the goal line a fumble. Was it because they said the whistle blew? Sure looked like the ball came out before his butt hit the turf.

Looks to me like his butt hit just before the ball was pulled from his hands.

The whistle didn't blow until the Iowa St defender began running with the ball. When they ruled it "down by contact," I thought for sure we were done. Not sure why it wasn't overturned and Iowa St ball at the 1 yd line.

Then he fumbles very next play? That was a "Wow" moment.

On the replays, I hear the whistle blow after the Iowa State player is 5 yards up field with the ball. Gray was leaning back, but had not gone down to the ground, his knees being up.

It was a fumble. Both myself and Bill Byrne (former Aggie AD) saw it that way, as I read his tweet. [IMG]

I guess "Down by contact" is in the eyes of the beholder.

Doesn't matter, the refs called it a fumble so it was a fumble and no one can complain about home field advantage. Bill Byrne is an ******* and proves it constantly. Really, a man of his position (or ex-position) tweeting **** like that? He was obviously a perfect fit for that place. [IMG]

    Fiesta,

Back off man. Byrne is a man of great knowledge and ability. He has been the topic of discussion among football powers for a couple of years.

After all, what other AD in history was not consulted or involved in the most important decision in his school's athletic history? As a matter of fact he wasn't even in the country.

You gotta love A&M. What other school has ever kidnapped its President to keep him from talking to the NCAA or appearing at a press conference? Add in sending the AD to Europe with its women's team while making the biggest decision in school history, and you have a Former Students group that is in control - or at least organized.

I think it was a fumble. But I think the fact that the ball is not visible at any time prior to Gray hitting the ground makes the fumble "implied" by the actions of the surrounding players rather than proven by seeing the ball coming out. Maybe when Gray hit the ground, the ball flew out of his hands into the hands of the departing ISU player, as improbable as that may be. That lack of indisputable proof caused the replay officials to hesitate in overruling the call on the field.

folks, we lost to Iowa State....

no question....THIS WAS A FUMBLE and a recovery that should have not been whistled and the IOWA STATE defender should be allowed a touchdown....

nothing points to Bergeron being down or stopped....

ugh....I hate this....we didn't deserve even to beat Iowa State...

we suck from proportions I cannot comprehend.... [IMG]

On the replay, you can see the linesman running toward the spot with his arm up marking the ball down. Then we hear a whistle blow and the players, except for the ISU guy with the ball, pretty much stop in response to the whistle. Keeping in mind that light travels faster than sound (as we learned in grade school), the TV sound may be misleading and the whistle and marking by the linesman were just a split second before that takeaway--the dreaded "quick whistle" as they say. As I and most agree, the action shows it should likely have been a legit fumble, but the play was ruled dead by the linesman and all action subsequent is irrelevant. That's the way it goes sometimes and not always in our favor.

No one on the field reacted as if it were a fumble, with the sole exception of the guy who came out of the pile with the ball. Its close but the ref announced down by contact and there's nothing in the video to conclusively prove otherwise.

And finally, Rhoads left the door open by pulling a KubiAg and kicking the field goal. F him....what a *****.

Dick move by Mack to not let Rhoads off the field with just a quick handshake. He was clearly pissed and just wanted to get off the field but Mack needed the ego boost.

Stoops has never grabbed Macky by the arm and talked to him about what a great game it was after ANY of his legendary, record shattering 40+ point beat downs.

Its sickening that it required a lucky Hail Mary score and a blown fumble call to beat the likes of Iowa State. Im not sure if Kansas will be a win at this point

I like that Rhoads stood up for his team instead of spouting off some bs just to be PC.

Had the play been called a fumble, it would not have been overturned either. It's one of those plays where there's just not enough evidence to conclusively overturn it. That said, isn't there a rule about forward progress? I mean you can't hold a guy up in the air for 5 minutes trying to strip him, right? Perhaps the refs f-ed up by saying "down by contact" rather than "forward progress stopped"?

Pretty cool we get "home-cooking" when we are the visiting team. We got the win but that was a loss for MB.

This is the only time I have ever wanted Texas to lose a game. Iowa State outplayed us. Even if the goal line call is correct they deserved to win.

This team and this program are an abomination of the highest magnitude, as the announcers correctly described during most of the 4th quarter.

what about forward progress? i thought if forward progress was stopped and the guy is stood up, the ball is dead right there.

Amen. They stacked the box and left a small slow db in one on one coverage. The db either had to either hold, interfere or give up the long gain. Iowa St was lucky they didn't get more penalties. I saw some that weren't called. The Iowa St coach knew what he was calling on defense and then wants to complain about the penalties? What a tool.
