He may be giving up a fantastically valuable 5th year for doing it, but he played last night. Maybe it's a dear price to pay to ease the anxiety about having a backup ready, then again maybe after four years on campus Swoopes will be ready to move on anyway.
Judging from Mack's comments in the presser, he should get a lot of playing time this week against KU. That is, of course, assuming we have a big lead.
^^^^ Absolutely. Practice doesn't come close to replicating what he will see in games. His preparation will be ramped up now, judging from coach and player comments after the game last night.
The informed TV announcers had no clue who Swoopes was or what the implications were of him handing the ball off in mop up time.
The reality that there is no backup with experience at this point in time is a vulnerability that makes this a wise move, imo.
I think it was a needed move, especially with the continuing question about Ash's health issues. I wonder if Case's interceptions played a role at all. Probably not.
If he gets pressed into meaningful action, a few snaps with a 23 point lead in the 4th quarter of a game probably won't be that useful.
This says more about Ash than it does Swoopes. There are two games coming up where in theory Texas should be able to get leads and get Swoopes playing time so may as well have gotten him in yesterday/this morning. The problem is every time I think Texas has a gimme game they make it close.
as long as it's followed up with more playing time down the road, it's a good move. He needs to get out and get a feel for the game if he can. I don't get the obsession in hanging onto his freshman year so he can have four years. If he's great, he's not going to stay four years anyway. If he's not great, then we've got some potential game-changers at QB coming in that would get to step up that much sooner.
I found that amusing too Lhorn33. They had no clue. Swoopes coming in says one thing - Ash is a less than 5% chance of returning and we will be going against some teams that keeping the ball away from their offense will be a critical part of the game plan, hence a qb that can run will be essential. I anticipate him getting much more game time than we would normally see from Mack and his tendency to play the back up. We'll see.
Perhaps he should have seen some action before now, but KU and WVU should present great opportunities to get him some meaningful snaps.
Should we be fortunate enough to get ahead so Swoopes gets in, I hope mack lets him run a variety of plays--including passes and read options. I like it when teams allow their backups to run the offense just as if the snaps were meaningful. Swoopes needs to get ready, and that's the only way he has any chance to approach getting ready.
I was there, and some at the game opined that you can play a few quarters in a season without burning a redshirt. While that is true of a medical redshirt, I've never heard of it as a routine thing. FWIW, most of those around me were wearing purple.
Lowell Galindo remarked on Texas Gameday Final that the shirt had been burned. No mention of what you said.
If you play, even one snap, your shirt is burned. If he does get hurt and has not played more than a specific amount he could apply for a medical redshirt. So baring injury his he has used one year of eligibility.
Case's new goal for Saturday should be to get so far ahead that he's pulled in the middle of the 3rd quarter.
Reality is that Case is a senior and Ash may not play again. So, not only do we burn Swoopes' redshirt this year, but also Heard's redshirt next year. If Ash does return for his senior year, we still need to burn both redshirts. We nned to win now, which means Case stays in until the game is decided against Kansas. After the game is decided, Swoopes needs to continue with the first string and play like we are in a tie game. Too bad for Kansas, but Swoopes' playing time is essential for next year.
Play and prepare the best team possible for the CURRENT SEASON. That is your job as a football coach. Not to leave your team exposed if an injury occurs and you have to trash the season holding a guy back. That's ridiculous.
The shirt is burned. Now when Swoopes goes in, let him run the full playbook, no matter what the score is. Let him get familiar with running the offense.
I am glad Swoopes is playing. I see 2 scenarios: 1. Herad takes over as starting QB, and Swoopes transfers 2. Swoopes is the next coming of Vince, and leaves for the NFL Either way I do not see him staying for 4 years.
