Catholic, Before you get too excited, look at some of those new choices. You don't have to go any farther than Graham. Is there a bigger piece of **** in coaching? Steve is a nice guy, but a horrible choice.
This: While Luck has been the acknowledged front-runner to succeed Dodds through weekend interviews, Patterson made a strong impression on the eight-member advisory panel and UT president Bill Powers during a Sunday interview. An industry source familiar with both finalists said Luck is more charismatic but Patterson, a former Houston Rockets general manager, brings a strong vision and business acumen. Like Luck, Patterson possesses a UT law degree. And he is not afraid to clean house! Me Happy!
Wow... for weeks all the experts said Luck was the favorite. Patterson will have a lot of work to do. Now that we know who the AD will be, in the coming weeks it will be interesting to follow the leaks and speculation about potential coaching replacements at UT.
And then there is this little nugget from Red McCombs (per Mike Finger): Mike Finger @mikefinger McCombs, on what Patterson hire means for Mack Brown: "I think Mack is back until he decides to retire, and that's the way it should be."
As usual, the inside scoop is wrong. Telling us what we want, not what we will get. This is bad news for the inside scoop that Saban is our next Football H C. It will be someone in 2014, we still have Brown to kick around for another pathetic year. ]
Does anyone know how much actual authority the Texas AD has with respect to hiring decisions? I assume the University President is involved, and certainly the big donors will be heard, but I wonder who has the final say. These are obviously huge decisions, both financially and politically, so I assume there is a strict procedure involved.
I would be very surprised if Patterson has any more input than making recommendations regarding new head coaching hires. There are far too many big egos at UT for that not to be the case.
Dionysus, Don't know what this crowd will do with Patterson, but Deloss has NEVER hired or fired a football coach at Texas.
I really wasn't paying much attention to the behind-the-scene details when Mackovic was hired. I wasn't too hot on the hire, is all I remember. SabreHorn, who selected him (or who pushed for him) if not Deloss?
I have to admit that I thought the job was Luck's if he wanted it and Patterson was nothing more than a secondary choice if Luck declined. Apparently Luck thought so too, as a source close to him reportedly has said he thought it was a done deal. I guess Patterson must have really wowed them during his interview.
I'm guessing (cynically) that the closing comments, respectively, by Luck and Patterson to the members of the interviewing committee went like this: Luck: "In summary, if you want to return football, baseball, and basketball to their winning ways at The University, I am the man for the job." Patterson: "In summary, I'll double revenues of the athletic department."
For what's it's worth Patterson has written agreement to not hire anyone away from ASUThe Link So no chance Graham could come here - although I would think Graham's lawyers could challenge that.
At least one Big Cigar, Red McCombs, seems to like the hire. I didn't know anything about him until a few weeks ago. Sounds like he's well qualified and is a UT man. Let's give him a chance. I'll be very surprised if he comes swooping in like Jerry Jones did in Dallas and forces out a legendary coach right off the bat, as a lot of people around here are hoping.
Jayakris, The hiring of Mackovic was little willie Cunningham and his alone, perhaps with some inspiration from Bernard "I spent four years on the Forty Acres and never attended a football game" Rappaport. There was a meeting of the "committee of 300", during which Kiki spoke up and said he had heard that we were considering Mackovic. He suggested that the administration talk to several former players that had played for him in the NFL. We had either two or three on the Chiefs team htat went to Lamar Hunt and refused to play the next year if Mackovic returned. The administrations response was to ask privately after the meeting "what's Kiki's problem". Cunningham greatly admired the overwhelming arrogance of Mackovic, which he thought came closer than anyone he had met to his own. It was Bur-dull who gave him the new contract after his only good year. Paying off his arrogant *** is the best money The University ever spent.
