Please not Gundy, he's way worse against OU than Mack is.

Nick Saban is a shoe-in. Why would a new extension slow him down? What is the buyout? And he doesn't have to negotiate a salary. His price is $7 million. And he has that Lakeway property ready to go. [IMG]

Why do people think recent extensions will prevent a coach from jumping to their "dream" job? It has happened in the past.

The real question is this - Does Texas and its fans want someone who would jump ship days or weeks after signing a big contract extension or after saying they would finish their careers at their current schools? If the answer is no, then the pool just got smaller especially for the big names.

art briles. ties to texas recruiting/high school football coaches. powerful offense (usually). just needs athletes on defense to field complete team. we can give him that.

Why, of course, it's Chip's absolute assurance for a mere $10 per month that it will be Nick Saban . . . .

Chippy: the laughing-stock of internet media.

Saban, Malzahn , Fisher , Mora, Freeze, Sumlin and Briles just signed big extensions. at least 2 of them swore allegiance to their schools - Saban & Briles

I agree with Art Briles. His grass roots in the state of Texas are 2nd to none. He's the real deal for Texas.

I'll throw out a pie-in-the-sky name: Bill Cowher's been out of the coaching game too long.

If it was a couple of years from now and if Stanford could maintain a high level of success, I'd say Shaw. But he's got the benefit of a senior-heavy lineup this year (Harbaugh's recruits), and he lost to Utah and USC, both of which I felt they should've handled. With few returning starters next year, I think 2014 will give us a better read on just how good Shaw is.

Malzahn is my first choice but not likely.

Helfrich from Oregon - offensive mind, available after the Alamo Bowl

Mark Richt - good record at UGA, ave almost 10 wins per season

Why all the love for Shaw? He lost 2 games they were favored to win, and backed their wai into the PAC 12 champ game.
I'm not sold on him yet.
I'd take a pause on Helfrich too.
    Can't afford to miss.
I'm sold in Jim Mora Jr.
Richt not a bad choice, safe but not a big splash.
    Butch Jones from Tennessee?

James Franklin is 15-4 at Vanderbilt in the SEC the last two years. 2nd only to Alabama. The guy is a great recruiter and an innovative, energetic, young, hungry coach.

Shaw from Stanford would be # 2.

Gundy would be my third choice.

Briles is in his 60's. Too old.

Malzon would be fine, but he's not going anywhere.

Franklin, Shaw or Gundy would have Texas in a BCS bowl eight of the next ten years. Plus we would be WINNING B12 titles. We would be the monster that UT football ought to be.

OK, somebody really explain to me this extreme love for Franklin. He is a good coach, and brought up a perennial doormat to prominence. 6-7, 9-4 and 8-4 at Vanderbilt is some serious turnaround. I am convinced he can coach no-name players into winners. I think he is a good recruiter too (for selling a no-name Vanderbilt), but we have no idea of his ability to recruit blue-chips by selling how great he is. It will have to be on the basis of how great he "will be" at Texas, and I am not sure blue-chip HS players will buy it.

I also don't know if he has the gravitas to be bringing topnotch reputed assistants with him, which is again what some blue-chips will look for. May be his NFL offensive coordinator background can be sold?

On the other hand, I am impressed with how Vanderbilt has played their games this year even in three of their losses, and the 4 game win streak to finish the year (they had a slow start and fast finish last year too - but both times the schedule was like that). Fairly convinced that the guy can coach players. But how about all the rest, especially selling himself to HS blue-chips?

Sounds like a risky hire to me, but I am willing to be convinced otherwise.

I am all for Jim Mora though. The guy is a tremendous recruiter and would fit quite well with Texas. May be David Shaw as well.

NOT Gundy. He is a known quantity. He is not THAT great a recruiter either (and don't give me the "it is OSU" argument.). The guys doesn't crack top-30 year after year in recruiting ranking. That is not all because it is "OSU". He is not a great recruiter, period. He also has not shown that when he coaches up the 2-star players (he is great at that), and finally has a team that can go undefeated to conference championships, he can get the job done. See what happened last week against OU. I am really scared that we will go for the guy. No, please. Yes, he might win 9 a year at Texas, but keeping the no-more-than-2-losses average that we look for, will be tough for him. We also don't know if he can motivate topnotch players to play to potential, unlike coaching up no-names. Those are two different things. he is not a huge risk, but he will quite possibly not get us to the 2004-2009 mack levels that we want. Of course, I don't know everything about the guy who is "a man, and is 35+" [IMG] ... Others who have arguments can sure tell us -- other than the "if he did it at OSU, think what he can at Texas" argument that doesn't ever work for me.
