Please not Jimbo. They play a weak schedule every year.
Has he ever upset a team as a HC?

There are others I'd rather have as well, but honestly Texas should never have to upset anyone.

Two sources, including one connected to Briles, said Briles would take the Texas job if offered.

Not my first choice, but I just have a feeling it's going to be Briles.

With Briles Texas nails two birds with one stone. A great coach that knows the state and they don't have to play him every year.

Briles would recruit the **** out of this state and prepare his teams to play.

I have read what I'm sure all of the people obsessed with this situation have read. I have pondered the situation more than I care to admit. (My wife and son are convinced that I've lost the ability to think about anything else).

As of today, I've finally reached a point where I feel like I want a specific outcome and have a reason for it.

    Briles should be the guy.
    Reasons:
    1. He's been successful everywhere he's been
    2. Texas is the breeding ground of the top qb talent in the country. We need someone who can exploit that. He has proven he can do that without a doubt. (More than any other candidate out there in my opinion)
    3. He's locked into the state of texas. (More than any other candidate)
    4. He comes in with something to prove. (More than any other splash hires)
    5. Taking him from baylor eliminates a major brewing recruiting hurdle in the state of texas. (Not true of any other candidate)

My only concerns with him are
    1. that it seems other coaches don't respect him. Its hard to gauge what that's all about.
    2. He seems to allow more thuggish disrespectful behavior than I'd like to see on the texas sidelines. I just hope that tones down some.

I can live with the concerns as long as he handles the program in a respectful way and wins.

    I hope we get briles.

Count me as another vote for Briles.
All the names on that list built something, save Jimbo.
    He just inherited it.
Briles is Chip Kelly from Texas.

Tan Ted, so your family thinks that you are a bit obsessed...? Are they suggesting that it is "not normal" for someone to monitor every message board, every rumor site, and every sports site including ESPN, CBS Sports, Fox Sports, The Sporting News, NBC Sports, and CNNSI (to name just a few) constantly, roughly 24 hours a day, for days on end? That's troubling...that they would not understand.

Some people are just disappointing. For example, I was disappointed when, over Christmas, my best friend felt that it was more important to spend quality time with his family than to be available to listen to my mindless, rambling, ill conceived and pathetic observations about our vacant HC position.

Apparently there are folks out there that have their priorities misaligned. Fortunately, neither you nor I fall into that category.

And by the way, when's the next update?

I don't see Briles getting past the upper echelon alums. Personally, he reminds me of a judgmental Baptist Deacon who buys his booze at the drive through window so no one sees him doing it. Who knows what the guy is really like?

I would welcome the hire. Especially for our existing offensive weapons. Can you imagine what Briles would do with our weapons? If he gets the job, quite a story. High school to U of H, to Baylor, to The University of Texas.

I think Briles has more weapons right now than we do. I still think he'd do well with ours, but I think a lot of us don't want to own up to that part, it's like being Texas automatically means we have more talent than everyone else or something?

I said briles too. He will dominate. Offense will finally have an identity that begins and starts with the head coach. Defense just needs to take advantage of its athletes. He has shown recruiting prowess on that side of the ball as well.

I am not as up on all the fantasy coach predictions and candidates as others so can somebody enlighten me on something? I have read some people talking about how Briles does not like Texas or may have an ax to grind with the University or Athletic Program.

Where does this come from? Is it made up or just perceived or has there been print or interviews to back this up?

Does he harbor something against the team for anything that may or may not have happened when Kendall (sp?) was here? I thought he transferred to be with his Dad and not from any problems he had here other than maybe wanting to have a shot at QB.

Other than the whole voting us down that one year in the BCS, what gives people the idea he does not like us? I truly don't know. It seems when he and Mack would speak (beyond just after a game) they were more than cordial, almost buddies. Then again, that's the Mack affect on people. He cups all their heads when they speak as if he's about to get to second base.

It's funny, a lot of the issues brought out about some of the candidates center around what they have NOT done ye - i.e. coached in a big-time conference, won a BCS bowl, won a title, etc...

But when we talk Art Briles, all that seems to go out the window. I get that he's connected in the high school coaching system and thus can recruit - there a bunch of other coaches that recruit well in Texas, and I've yet to see Art put together a true blue-chip recruiting class. (The argument is "well sure, but he's doing it at Baylor!" Kind of like how Franklin is doing all he's doing at Vanderbilt? Yes it looks good... but it's hardly a slam dunk recipe for success.)

Who has he beaten? His best team ever had a "signature" win of beating a bad Oklahoma team about as badly as Texas beat them, then getting stomped by Oklahoma State. They put up fantastic numbers against bad teams - I seem to remember Greg Davis getting run out of town for doing that.

I really don't get it. I understand why the media salivates over them - they're paid to draw obvious connections with little or no actual understanding of the situation. But I really don't understand why people who watch him year after year are so convinced he's going to take Texas to the next level.

About the disrespectful, thuggish behavior Briles seems to allow on the sideline as stated above...

OU is kinda along those lines as well. However, neither team really gets too out of hand with it until they have a strong team who's winning big games. While it can be out of line sometimes, I also believe it comes with the swagger and confidence that they have a fiery coach and a confident, aggressive team.

To me, I'd rather not see it, yet I'd also choose a few of those incidents over what we have seen at Texas lately. A passive bunch without confidence they are going to hammer someone or the killer instinct that comes along with supreme confidence and swagger. A team with all nice, polite kids is missing a certain element as we have seen lately. Back in the days we were on top, we always had a few of those thuggish guys who could ball and the team had attitude. Just saying.

Rumor mill has Penn State HC O'Brien close to going to the Texans which will open up the HC search at a second historically major program. Texans and O'Brien are reportedly working out the details of a deal. This might put some pressure on the Texas job search if their potential HC targets overlap.... such as Golden and Franklin.

With respect to Fisher NOT building a program but rather inheriting one, I disagree. He helped build FSU as the OC/QB coach for 3 seasons before taking over. He helped bring the program back after 2 or 3 bad years.

Prior to that, he was the QB/OC at LSU for 6 years under Saban and Miles. Not a bad resume.

As a QB coach and OC throughout his career, he would bring the skills on the offensive side that I feel Texas needs.

I would probably be satisfied with any of the "finalists" being mentioned although I do have my favorites. There are no perfect candidates out there with the possible exception of Harbaugh who, as we all know, can be a bit rough around the edges. Even DKR wasn't what he became at Texas at the time we hired him.

My guess is that Patterson and his posse are looking to hit a home run, someone with a very high profile, and someone that can make an immediate impact, not only on the field but perhaps just as importantly, in February.

Personally I don't see Briles as being the best fit for us but, again, I would be satisfied with the choice. The issue I cannot get past with Briles is the devastating impact his departure would have on Baylor. While I'm not a Baylor fan, remember that this is a school on the verge of being left out in the cold had Texas and our friends -- OU, OSU and TTech -- defected to the Pac 10. Because of Briles, Baylor has not only come back from the brink, but they are now a factor on the national stage. If we offer, Briles will be facing a difficult conundrum. If he leaves, some might question his character. If he stays, others might question his judgment. Not a simple dilemma.

I think Briles is a great coach. He's proved that. But I want someone younger. Briles is damn near on Medicare. His time here would be short, at best, due to that. I would prefer someone else on that list. Not Art.

Count me as another Briles supporter.

I am sure that Bob Stoops hopes that UT does NOT hire Briles.
If Briles comes to UT I think it starts a long domination of OU on the field and in recruiting.

Of the 4 mentioned in that article, I'd go with Franklin or Fisher. Not listed I wouldn't mind Malzahn or Shaw however I just don't see either of those guys leaving, especially Shaw. Doesn't really matter what I think since I don't believe I get to vote on it.

Rumor has it that the super duper elite selection committee might be consulted but there is no evidence to that effect at this point.

    What's up with that farce?

Are they going to be involved or are they a rubber stamp for Patterson/Powers?

IMO, they are a smokescreen and Patterson/Powers should just do there jobs but maybe it was a concession by Powers to allow him some leeway in selecting a new HC.

Still wondering if anyone is considering Chad Morris. No, he hasn't been a Head Coach in college yet - but Bob Stoops was a coordinator when Zero U hired him, and that seems to have panned out pretty well. I still believe someone is going to get a terrific hire in Chad.

HHD, I think that Patterson's exposure is too great to take a chance on Morris. Such exposure did not exist when OU selected Stoops. It's a different world now and it is not unreasonable to state that this HC selection will probably be the most scrutinized in college football history.

    But...how about this dream team?

    Harbaugh as HC
    Morris as OC
    Gray as DC

    Hey, we can all dream.
