Mack resigned and said the program needs new energy and new ideas.
Most agree with him, but you don't. Fair enough.

But he's not coming back, so which coach should replace him?

Anybody who is not selected based on an anti-Mack reaction. That is, candidates who aren't picked solely based on their ability to do what Mack didn't do well (quite a bit of which were correct complaints, but some of which were exaggerated and embellished to make a case to get him out when it was time too).

Candidates who actually have several of the positives Mack had, and not just the ones who don't have his negatives.

But I am not a Mack-loyalist or anything. I was a mack-realist, and wanted to have him out only after it was completely justifiable to do so - and not on any knee-jerk reaction. That's old story.

Shaw and Mora would fit for me right now. Jimbo would have. Morris too, with some risks on which assistants would come under him. I could live with Strong also, may be. Dantonio would also work for me - but he may not move. All based on what I know now. That could change as we learn more details too. Gundy no, Briles no.

I would prefer someone in their 30s or 40s. I'd rather not have someone come in with the hopes that they win one or two championships within 6 years and then retire.

I would hire Mack Brown back at this point, so I guess that makes me a loyalist.

    Since that is not likely:
    1. Urban Meyer
    2. Notre Dame Kelly
    3 Mazlahn(sp)

Since those probably wont be available:

    4. Larry Fedora He would win a NC at Texas
    5. Mike Riley
    6. Larry Coker
All of the above can take the existing talent and win big and recruit big.

The rest are midgets that we will have to suffer through until they are fired.

I did not consider any pro coaches.

Actually, I would like to know why he stuck with Diaz but had Robinson lined up and ready to go. Doesn't make sense, unless there was political pressure to keep Diaz. I also think he had numerous injuries, much like Florida that affected this year's outcome along with a first year OC that will only get better. Regardless of the yards Oregon had, Robinson held their offense to 16 points.
Next year with Ash back, Robinson and Applewhite back and in second years, I could see the turn around happening. Whoever takes Texas will have a loaded roster and unfortunately Brown will not get any credit for the "amazing turnaround" ala Ty Willingham at Notre Dame.
Since Brown, Applewhite and Robinson will not be back (Applewhite resigned today I believe). I look for the coach that can take the talent , win and then recruit.

I really don't see any available coaches other than Larry Fedora, Mike Riley or maybe Coker that can accomplish that task.

The rest are playing with players or systems put in place by the previous coach (Shaw, Mora) or have a great QB (Strong) or just not that good (Franklin).
These guys would do well for a couple of years, 8-10 wins and then go mediocre under the spotlight and be gone.

I leave Dantonio,, Maselahn(sp), ND Kelly, Saban, and Meyer out because they ain't coming. Same with the pro coaches.

I hope our fanbase comes together again.

    WorsterMan SEC here we come!!

LHC - what's done with Mack is done, obviously no going back. I too hope the fanbase comes together after the HC pick. We will all need to put aside our personal preferences, likes / dislikes and prejudices (including mine of not liking Briles) to support the new coach(es) and give them our full support & the opportunity to succeed. I also hope this does not become political, especially with the liberal Powers probably close to the end of his stay at UT and looking for his legacy.

I remember when the sports world considered Nebraska fans "salt of the earth".
They lost that image pretty fast, and I'm just afraid that will happen to us.

I think, for the most part, honest fans will tell you Longhorns are one of the best.

I liked Mack, but wouldn't consider myself a loyalist. I hope this doesn't preclude me from responding.

My criteria would include someone who possesses top notch interpersonal skills and player development, as well as a proven ability to build effective contingency plans before/during/after a game. To me, these traits are at least as important as someone with pure chops for Xs & Os. Sure, I'd like someone who is a proven winner and can scheme with today's elite coaches, but I also want someone who wins the right way. Beyond that, I would look for someone who has the ability (and the backbone) to tactfully deal with all of the political BS and outright arrogance & entitlement from boosters/fans/alumni/media that goes along with being the Texas HC.

My list wish is below. Caveat: since my views on each come only from what I've seen on TV and read about them, I have no idea how well they truly fit into my criteria scorecard, so it's probably a good thing I'm not on the hiring committee and don't have the final authority on making the hiring decision. 1. David Shaw--Seems like an extremely bright and honorable man. He grew up under the tutelage of many proven coaches (Bill Walsh, Dennis Green, Brian Billick, Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh) which certainly helps his credentials. He has a very respectable record in his 3 years at Stanford (34-7, I think) with back-to-back conference titles and 3 consecutive BCS bowl appearances (even though he only went 1-2 in those). During interviews, he seems very polished and humble, but I read reports where he can be "thin-skinned" mostly toward stupid questions from the media. The latter is not a bad thing in my book. I have never heard him make excuses and he does not seem to have the "clap, clap" syndrome our previous coach had. I'm not 100% sure how much weight can be put into his conference record considering the PAC-12 has not been top notch as of late. His teams also tend to lose at least one game a year that they shouldn't. I've noticed his offensive play calling gets too conservative at times (last night vs. MSU was a prime example of this). Regardless, he has proven he can build upon what others before him started and is keeping Stanford among the CFB elite.

    2. Jon Gruden--I like what he's done with QB/offensive player development and the fact that he won at the highest level of football. He proved he could do reasonably well at a place (Oakland) that, at the time, was possibly more dysfunctional than Texas. Granted, his W/L record wasn't always stellar, but part of his down years with Tampa Bay came as a result of the trade that brought him to the Bucs and ultimately handcuffed the team's draft pics. I respect his no-nonsense/tough love coaching style. I also think it would be amusing to see how he wouldd handle the local media and big cigars. His direct nature might piss off some bluebloods, but I for one think his no BS style would serve this place well. I have no idea how he'd do on the recruiting trail, but I have to believe most 4/5* recruits would listen when Chucky came into their homes.

    3. Larry Coker--I am cheating here a little bit. I hadn't considered him until others mentioned his name. He seems like a stand-up guy and did very well at the U. I actually ended up rooting for that team while he was their coach. I would have previously thought such a thing would be blasphemy considering what I saw that program do to Texas while I was freezing my *** off in the Cotton Bowl on 1/1/91.

I'm curious why Bronco Mendenhall's name hasn't been mentioned. He seems like a good coach and usually puts a competitive team on the field.
