I don't think we settled. As someone mentioned earlier, I think Patterson wanted him from the start however you have to interview all your choices.

As someone else pointed out, most aggy wanted him too. I think he will bring some needed fundamentals to this team. I hope he has a killer OC in mind.

I think he's a good hire. Questions remain, especially re: who his OC will be. That will be key. I'm certainly hopeful that he will take us back to the promised land. We will see and it should be very interesting. [IMG]

Being on the west coast, I've had lots of people say "too bad we missed out on Mora". Harbaugh was never on a list other than a dreamers. That being said, I get the same sense as I did about Mackovic's skills - win some great games, but lose ones you should win. Mack won the ones you should but didn't always win the ones you had to, to get over the hump.

I was hoping for Malzahn. His track record impresses me. But Strong has upside too. I still hold out crazy hope for Malzahn, but am ready to support our next coach.

Although my initial reaction to the Charlie Strong hiring wasn't very positive, after reading some articles on him, I'm warming up to him. His philosophy on injured players is very refreshing: any player who gets injured has to keep working out the other parts of his body even harder than in regular workouts, so much so that players want to get healthy and back to regular workouts ASAP.

Good video on Strong's S&C coach Pat Moorer here...

I m not sure we can call Strong a great coach. A little to early. I do believe UT is a place where good coaches can become great. I was not happy about his hiring. I wanted a younger coach but its time to look at the positives and will support him and hope for the best. Hook em

Houston 13 - Louieville 20 with Louisville at home (Nov. 16), and today Vanderbilt is kicking the hell out of Houston. So tell me again why Strong is a better choice than Franklin?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Let's keep this going. UT beat OU by 2 touchdowns on a neutral field then OU beat Bama by 2 touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl. HOLY CRAP!. We just eased out a coach 4 touchdowns better than NICK SABAN!

Perhaps I missed it but, I don't recall seeing anyone suggest that because Strong was not their preferred choice, we should have kept the status quo. People are entitled to their opinions. If Strong produces on the field as we all hope, even the most ardent doubters will probably be happy to admit that they were wrong.

I don't. Unless there was some sort of friction between HCs like Saban, Fisher, Urban, Briles, Harbaugh, etc. and the higher ups in their respective organizations, it didn't make sense for any of those guys to come to Texas at this point in time. They are all in great situations, on good runs, surrounded by lots of talent. The timing wasn't right for them to move.

Now, those within the fan base who thought Texas could get whoever it wanted because "We're Texas" were not being realistic IMO. To think that Saban, Fisher, et al. would come running just because "We're Texas" was wishful thinking and, IMO, based on a false perception of reality. Having an attitude that everyone wants to be the Texas HC, that no one in their right mind would turn down the Texas job, or that Texas can money whip anyone into coming is arrogance in its purest form and is the same type of attitude that leads to a sense of entitlement for which both Texas and non-Texas fans have vilified Dodds, Mack, the BMDs, the BOR, etc., especially over the last year or so.

Does a Strong hire mean that Texas had to "settle" for him, that Texas has lost its luster, or that it is the "dumpster fire" as some seem to think? I don't think so. It may very well be that Strong was the best, most realistic option given the timing of the Texas job opening and the fact that everyone at the top of the "wish list" currently find themselves in great situations from their point of view. There's nothing wrong with any of that. So, in that context, Strong is a solid hire based on what we know about him thus far and, in time, may turn out to be the "home run" hire that we all expected. I'm looking forward to finding out.

You guys seem to be making a false dichotomy.

Its etiher: HOMERUN or a dumpster fire.

I think we settled. But still made a nice solid hire. Strong was simply not in my top 5. He hasn't showed any ability yet to bring in a solid offense. His best year on offense was this year and they were #28 in overall offense. Meh.

If we truly get a good OC in here... like Mack was able to do for awhile with good DC's. Then this will turn out to be a great hire.

But settling does not mean (to me) that we made a bad hire. Just that we didn't 'hit' on our top targets and that we could've done better.

I think the culture shift that we dramatically needed is here! Plus we've got ourselves a bona-fide hard *** as a coach. I love all of this. And an under performing defense appears to be a thing of the past.

    Just on offense....I worry.

Nothing personal, but what a bunch of cry babies, two month ago it was anybody but Mack now your crying about one of the best up and coming coaches available. I think it was a great hire for a team that everyone called soft, he coaches tough football and that is the number one character point I was hoping for. I'm all in if they bring Strong to Austin.

This is an outstanding hire. His former boss gave him an A plus plus. I manage a bunch of folks and I can probably give that type of grade to about two people in the past 20 years. Besides the fact that he'll make Texas football tough again, the guy is smart with an impeccable reputation. He demands excellence on and off the field. I also love the fact Patterson interviewed exactly one person. He knew who he wanted. We definitely didn't settle.

Icing on the cake is the fact Texas has finally broken the racial barrier. It's time.
Thank GOD we didn't sell our souls and hire Saban. Welcome Coach Strong.

Strong is a great hire. Great coaching pedigree. Two MNC. Turned around a bad team with his First stint as head coach. Brown didn't accomplish much before he got here, and neither did Royal. Strong did way more than Royal ever did before Texas at Mississippi State and Washington. Some of you need to do some research on the coaches we have hired in the past before talking about "settling". Strong is our coach, and he is a Damn good one. And for aggy, he also had a better winning record than Sumlin and won a BCS game.

DKR was a pedestrian 17-13 at Mississippi State and Washington over 3 years. We seemed to like how his career unfolded at Texas. Strong is a great hire. He is an up and coming coach which makes it even more exciting. He will develop his name and career at Texas just like DKR, and Brown did. [IMG] People need to relax and let the folks and Belmont do what they are paid to do. Patterson is what we needed, and we needed a coach wo wants to win and not be a politician. We got exactly who we needed.

"I'm stunned! I'm pissed!" I wanted Gary Barnett.

Not really. I'm just recalling a famous internet quote from 17 years ago when Mack was hired. Barnett flamed out and Mack won a whole bunch of games and a MNC.

I'm fine with the Strong hire. If he can hire a good OC it will work out great. When Stoops first came to Oklahoma he hired a series of top notch OC's like Mangino and Leach who went on to head coaching jobs similar to how Mack hired a series of top notch DC's who went on the head coaching jobs (until the one who will remain unmentioned). It can be done.

I think Strong will prove to be an excellent hire. I can see this guy winning a few nattys at Texas.

I have always wondered what a good AA coach could do at a place like Texas. Now I'll get to see.

I remember when OU hired John Blake back in the 90s. That hire really concerned me because I thought Blake, being AA, would be a monster recruiter and destroy us.

Turned out Blake was a monster recruiter. All those guys Stoops won a NC with back in 2000? Many of those guys were John Blake's. In the case of John Blake, however, it also turned out he couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper sack. Thankfully.

From what I can tell about Charlie Strong, he is one heckuva coach. Strong can coach his way out of a wet paper sack and a whole lot more. You may not catch Charlie Strong reciting a Shakespearean soliloquy, but you also won't see many opponents' WRs catching the ball across the middle either. At least not without paying a hard price.

Because that's where we're at: The Texas Longhorns are about to be remade hard. We will be tough and we will be determined. We will not quit. We will play hard for all 4 quarters. The days of getting stomped by 30, 40, or 50 points are about to become the days of yore.

You can expect the upcoming Spring Training to be one of the toughest in Texas history. Strong is going to be demanding. Strong is going to be unfairly
demanding. By being unfairly demanding, Strong is going to find out who will quit, who will snap, and who will fight through it all to become better football players.

This is the way Strong did it his first year at Louisville and it will be the way he does it his first year at Texas. Is there any other way to become tough? To become determined? Hard?

Our team is about to enter football Hades this Spring and it is not going to be easy. Or fun. Mark it down.

And Strong will do it all without cussing. He has no need of alcohol to recharge his batteries. He will be there at 6 am lifting weights right along with the players. Our guys may have academic issues, but Strong, with his 2 Masters degrees and record of graduating the last 92 out of 97 players at UL, will make sure each one of our guys goes to class.

The days of skipping classes are over. The days of coddling are done. Our guys are going to learn to be responsible. It bears repeating: Responsible ... and ... hard
    .

Was Charlie Strong our first choice? Doubtful. Patterson says he was our only offer, but I doubt Strong was our first choice. If Strong was not our first choice, then, in some sense, yes, we did "settle".

But Charlie Strong may prove to be the best "settlement" Texas ever got. I, for one, at least, am very excited by the Strong hire. I think Coach Strong will lead us to the playoffs routinely, and, more often than not, win the whole thing. I think we got us a good one. JMO.

Strong post, XOVER.... That's the x-factor for me. The change in culture.

Also, you have to think he'll have a chip on his shoulder.

Oh the irony that Florida passed over him for Muschamp... and now he gets to go to the school that Muschamp scorned. Surely he wants to rub that hire in the face of the Florida AD.

And then there's the AA angle. This is a historic hire... and he has a chance to go down in history as one of the best ever.

    He should be super motivated.
