Depth? I expect David to be all conference, possibly more.

I'd hold back on the all conference talk. He hasn't practiced in months, and I doubt he is in football shape at the moment. It also remains to be seen how he/his body will handle taking hits once the season starts.

I definitely see potential in the guy, but I'd ease up on the expectations until we see him play again.

If I were his parents, I would not let him play again. I don't think he is good enough to make it in the pros, and I can't see him risking another concussion. Once you have had one, you are more likely to have another one. I'd be glad to have him next year, but not if his long term health is in danger.

So, if your kid was in a car wreck and sustained a concussion, you'd never let him drive again?

Ash should play. If he doesn't, he'd probably always wonder what he could have achieved.

Best of luck to David. I just hope he can take more hits without sustaining more damage. It's his decision.

Maybe the injury gave him some special abilities. Like telepathy that will allow him to read what the defense is thinking, or telekinesis, so that he can part the defense like the red sea.

It's good to see him back. I expect Ash to start because he is the most experienced and therefore should be able to read defenses better than Swoopes and Heard. I hope Swoopes gets significant playing time so there will eventually be competition between Ash and Swoopes and I hope Heard red shirts.

One skill Ash needs to learn quickly is to slide to avoid the collisions with violent people at the end of runs.

I'm sure this is similar to Tre Newton's sitution. They will use the spring to evaluate. If he gets another, the doctors will probably recommend he hang it up.

David needs to remember the QBs three best friends on the field: 1. Throw away, 2. the sideline, and 3. the slide. No reason to take defenders head on.

A passer who slides, run out, or throws away, gets to throw a pass on another play...

I thought they said during the bowl game that his wasn't the type of concussion that gave him a higher chance reoccurring.

David Ash cleared by Texas’ medical staff

As he begins to prep for his first spring as Texas’ head coach, Charlie Strong will be armed with the knowledge that the “incumbent” at the quarterback position will be a full, healthy go.

In tweets posted to its Twitter account Saturday night, the Longhorns revealed that David Ash has been cleared for offseason training. That clearance includes full participation in the 15 spring practice sessions that will commence in the next couple of months.

Ash missed most of the 2013 season due to a concussion suffered early on. After incurring the original injury Sept. 7, Ash returned two weeks later only to see the concussion symptoms recur. In late November, Ash was officially shut down for what little was left of the season.

Because of that, however, Ash will likely receive a medical redshirt, for which he’s already filed an appeal.

With a new offensive staff, including coordinator Joe Wickline and quarterbacks coach/former Louisville coordinator Shawn Watson, installing a new system, having Ash as a full participant during the on-field installation will be a huge plus for the Longhorns. Ash, though, will likely also be involved in a quarterback competition with touted 2013 signee Tyrone Swoopes.

Great news. We still haven't found out what David's ceiling is yet, but we do know he's capable of playing very well. I thought 2013 might be a breakout year for him. Hopefully, I was just a year off. With a Wickline running game and protection, this could be good.

Ash doesn't strike me as the type of hang it up unless he gets another concussion perhaps. Yeah the one he had lingered unusually long but it's not like he has a history of them at this point.

Could David Ash be great this year?

In a recent interview on AM1300 with former horn rb Tre' Newton (recall he was forced to quit football after recurring concussions), he was asked about his thoughts on new rule changes to protect players. He basically said that it's a contact sport and nothing else should be done because, "...some people have soft heads and some people have hard heads." I think it's just that simple. Some people are just more prone to getting knocked out than others. Some more prone to knee injuries, etc.. Newton said that his father convinced him to quit. I'd love to see Ash finish what he started here, I think he can contribute next season if healthy. But if it turns out he has a "soft head", we can't depend on the OC not to call plays where he may get his bell rung.

No one but the real insiders know what David went through and the severity or length of recurring symptoms. My thought all along was Mack attached his wagon to Case, and told David many games before the end they were going to hold him out for the Medical redshirt. Even though he likely could have made a return according to doctors. I doubt very seriously he wasn't cleared a month before the season ended. Even a few weeks before the end they said he would be fine to return for Spring. If he wasn't cleared at that point from concussion symptoms they could have never made that assumption.

Saying Ash is taking a bad or foolish risk just isn't a logical statement. There is no proof when he was cleared yet just held back for next year. Mack has a brief history of holding out for medical redshirts when a player misses a a handful of games. As I said I don't know the real deal just my gut feeling from what was being said to the public and the way Mack went all in on Case even when he imploded, excusing everything. The real truth is only a few people in the real know understand what went on.

If the doctors and the team say he can go, Ash agrees, then the risk has been measured strongly by those who know and they agree it is not severely endangering the kid. Ash will show everyone he's a good player under this regime, I have no doubt of that.

Time to cut the cord with Ash, and move onto something else.

If he had "it", it would have shown up by now.

He was poor his Fr year, inconsistent his SO year, with decent games sandwiched around 5 int showing against KSU, and a horrid performance against TCU, leading to his benching. Benching in favor of who? Case. Let that sink in, in terms of comparative ability.

Didn't show much against NM or BYU, then his injury.

Anyone know of any other college QB's who are not good for 2 years, then are decent in year 3? Usually you're shown the bench after two bad years.

Golden, totally disagree with your logic.
QB especially is a position where a kid can be much better year after year.
Vince red shirted and then there was talk of pulling the plug and moving him to receiver.
I thought David showed some flashes of potential greatness.

Not that I think Ash is that great, but he's better than anybody we have on the roster. If healthy he will/deserves to get his shot.

You say he didn't show much against UNM.....that was arguably one of his best games. 20/28 for 343 4TD, 91 Rushing and another TD.

He's been inconsistent for sure, but when he's on, he's pretty damn solid.

Ash improved significantly from year 1 to 2 to 3, in my opinion. High completion % in most games but so-so in others. 8 INTs in yrs 1 and 2 despite almost twice the attempts in yr 2. Last year started well for him and he looked more mature in his decisions and he was running the ball better. All that despite having a mediocre OL in front of him. He was inconsistent, no doubt, but so was Colt M as a sophomore.

Do I think he was the best QB in the conference? Not yet but he might be with time. He sure as heck was not the worst in the Big XII by a long shot.

I look forward to seeing Swoopes improve and pressing Ash this Spring. Swoopes has some raw skills but needs a lot more reps which he did not get much of this last season.

I think Ash is a good QB with a chance of being excellent if he continues to progress. He needs to learn to slide and otherwise protect himself from injury when possible.
