When going ape **** crazy after the last out of the Super Regional, I thought back on our annual trips to Omaha in the 1980's. One title and alot of heartbreak. For me the 1989 loss to WSU was the worst. But my mind then drifted off to football season. McWilliams was coach, the program was on it's knees and 31-30 wins over Rice were the order of the day. But then I remembered the second Saturday of October. We had not beaten OU since 1983. From 1985-1987, OU had gone 33-3, with all three losses coming to Miami. The were also National Champs in 1985. Barry had been forced out in the summer of 1989, and Gary Gibbs was the new coach. OU came to Dallas an 18 point favorite (I think that they have done that recently too, with poor results). For those to young to know what happened that magical day, there is a link to a story attached. But what I am really begging my fellow hornfans for, is does anyone have pictures that they can scan of the wild celebration, the goal posts coming down, the scoreboard etc. I went over the wall on to to the floor of the Cotton Bowl and twisted an ankle and only got about 3 pictures. And the scoreboard was turned off almost immediately. If anyone has any, please share with all of us that wonderful day. Peter's four wins are Longhorn Legend, and he is a third generation legacy. For the 1990 game I had a towel made that said "TEXAS - 28 OKLAHOMA - 24 THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.........AGAIN!" But please any pics would be a treasure! The Link
Have to double-check, but I don't think it was fourth down. The next year in 1990, the Cash catch for the win WAS on fourth down. I was standing in the back of the end zone when he made the catch about 20 feet away. Felt the stadium shake... still get chills remembering it.
I was sick as a dog that day, but I had game tickets and airplance tickets. So, I got up at the crack of dawn and flew to Dallas. Luckily my seats were in the shade most of the game and the win made it all worth while. The couple in front of me were split. He had on OU stuff and she had UT stuff. I personally don't know how you could make that work, but I guess they did. Boy did she razz the hell out of him after that catch.
Pictures anyone? All I have are the few I took from the field and the pic of Walker making the catch. And yep. It's been 25 years!
Sweet memories of Peter the Great and Johnny Walker that day. I was not at the game but remember going crazy after listening on the frikkin' radio ! That 1989 game was very similar to the 2013 game UT won when no one thought we would win. In Oct. 1989, other than perhaps the team or the coaches, very few fans if anyone thought UT had a chance in the game - we had not won since 1983 and other than the awful 15-15 tie in 1984 (I attended), ou had throttled UT since then.
I was there with my husband and my friend Cindy. Good times. Drunken times. I'd love to go back and relive that one!
I was a senior at UT. My ChE buddies and I went to a friend's parent's house (they were out of the country). Fajitas and a keg of Shiner Bock. We LISTENED TO THE GAME ON THE RADIO. OU was on probation that year. I believe HSE showed a replay at midnight or something. We planned to stay up and watch but we all passed out! Good time.
He may have beaten OU four times, but I never liked him as qb. We used to call him incomplete Pete. Other than OU he could never complete a pass when it counted but you could always count on him to throw an interception at the worst possible time. I was glad to see him go.
Vol Horn - that is a very accurate description of PG - he stepped up in the 4 ou games but was Mr. Inconsistent in many other games...
Peter the Great was the nickname the press gave him after the back-to-back upset wins over OU and Arkansas. Whatever happened to GardereOwnsOU?
Thanks for the pic IDE. They are pieces of frozen time. The message on the board appears to be promoting upcoming pig races. My first TX/OU was in '90 and went to 11 straight games. I don't ever recall seeing pig races at the fair.
The Link The Link The pig races have been a staple at the Texas State Fair for as long as I can remember. They are still going strong today at what I believe used to be called "Pork Chop Downs." Maybe it's still called that.
I was there. There were some freaky plays in that game. The last UT and the gardere' s pass to Johnny Walker was a great finish!
