If you don't want to know anything about the movie, stop now, though this doesn't spoil much of anything....... The year is 1973, and the scientist is describing his invention, saying it is "as maneuverable as a Harrier...." the Harrier didn't come out until the mid 80's.
Eyes, that's a complete fail. USMC started using them in the early 70s, and the Royal Navy were using them way back in the late 60s. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Siddeley_Harrier BTW, check out this CNN story/video posted today of a Harrier with a broken nose gear landing on an amphib. Pretty amazing.
