Crap! Maybe he can get a medical redshirt, but a lot of good that does this green OL... I feel awful for him, you could see the disquiet on his face as he left the field..
If he only played half of one game, I don't see why he wouldn't get a medical redshirt if he applied for one.
He was part of the '10 class which means he's already redshirted. He'd have to apply for a 6th year which he may or may not get.
I think Jordan Shipley was in the program for six years. I feel for Espinoza, and if a medical is possible and if he wants it, then wish him the best either way. As to the team, time for heroes to be born. I see a story in the making for someone, maybe Jake.
No disrespect, but we haven't been able to run the ball up the middle for 3+ years (including last night). A change at center may be welcome. Our OL is shockingly weak. I'm sorry he got hurt, however this could be positive in the long run.
The backup looked bad but Jake Raulerson is a redshirt freshman playing for the very first time in a real game in a couple of years. He was a highly touted recruit, who is supposed to have picked up the system quite fast in camp and was considered a bright spot there. Of course, I doubt he would be as good as Dom would be, but may be he will be okay after the first game jitters (especially at a spot where you hardly expected to play any meaningful minutes). But the whole offensive line needs a lot of work to get up to speed. The improvement from game 1 to game 2 needs to be significant.
Very bad news. Losing our best o-lineman, a fifth year senior at the center position, is going to hurt. No way a first year player is going to make up for this injury. Best wishes to Dominic Espinosa for a speedy and full recovery.
Read this: Link It's a different sport, but same rule and fact pattern applies. UW player who was a fifth-year senior suffered season-ending injury, applied to the NCAA for sixth year and was rejected because he couldn't show two seasons were lost due to something out of his control. When he redshirted as a true freshman, it was his choice and therefore, a lost season that was within his control.
NCAA - caring about the student-athlete. It should be simple - if you miss more than X% of the year, it doesn't use up a year.
The redshirt limitiation for a medical waiver is news to me. I wasn't aware of it. see bottom of page 30 for regulations on medical waivers NCAA Manual 2014 Waiver Espinosa Bio The redshirt limitation in the medical waiver process seems unfair to me in that the redshirt option is fully within the NCAA rules and regulations and an athlete should not be penalized for complying with the rules. That being said, the rules are the rules and participation implies acceptance of the rules. Best wishes to Dom for a full recovery and success in all future endeavors whether they include football at UT or not.
Ah sheeeet this is bad news. 5th year Sr., QB of the OL and our most experienced OL member. Raulerson, or however you spell it, is going to have to step up big time - he has no choice. Get well soon Espinosa - keeping my fingers crossed but medical redshirt does not sound highly likely.
