Does anyone else feel if he had played we would have won Sat ? It isn't a knock on Swoopes ability just his experience level. Say what you want but the team had not learned to respect his lead yet. He has to prove he can get the ball in the endzone. Give the defense hope that there not out there wasting there time. All the football victories in the world are not as important as the safety of that kid's brain. He should never play football again for his own sake.

The running game was the weak link on Saturday

Not won but it would have kept their safeties backed up a little. We still lose 31-17.

I believe if Ash would have played, we would have won because he would have had access to more of the playbook and therefore moved the ball. Especially with downfield pass plays.
I take nothing away from Swoopes, I think he performed well with the offensive package and play calling he was given.

Ash, playing or not, didn't give up 4 scores in the 3rd quarter. Even if he had been in the lineup and gotten more out of the offense in the third quarter, there is no way we could have kept up with the scoring pace that BYU established. It might have been a closer score but same outcome.

If Ash played, the deep ball is a real threat.
If the deep ball is a threat, BYU can't crowd the line and stiifle the run.
If the run is working, we easily put up 14 more points
Also, if the run is working, we give the D hope and some time to rest.
If the D gets rest and has better morale, they don't give up 14 of the points they did.

Even with all that, we still come up short. Four fumbles, LBs in the wrong hole, and missed chip shot FG.

It becomes an entertaining game, but BYU is a better team at this stage.

There is no doubt that the change in offensive and defensive schemes would set any team back. I
expect the team to look very different in 5-6 games.

Nope. We probably would have scored more, but there is no way we would have won that game. Taysom Hill ran all over us, we had 4 turnovers, 6 penalties for 64 yards, and BYU had the ball for almost 10 more minutes more than us.

That third quarter was absolutely soul crushing. If we play like that again, we won't beat anyone on our schedule.

Unless Ash can play all five OL positions at once, then stay out there to play both DT and replace #33 at LB, I'm not sure he would have made enough of a difference to make it close.

FWIW, I hope David gives up the game and stays healthy.

SabreHorn is correct. ASH at QB can't make up for an OL with 5 combined starts.

See the stats for Brown and Gray.

No, absolutely not. One reason for lack of deep balls was lack of time, Ash would not have improved the OL.

The third concussion is the last one. He is done.

David will go into the category of unfulfilled potential in a troubling time.

Ash wasn't all that effective against N. Texas. Maybe he was rusty or something, but no it wouldn't have mattered.

Game planning for breaking in a new QB while breaking in a new OL is impossible. Game planning for breaking in a new OL when your QB has multiple concussions is criminal. In order to keep Ash as safe as possible the passing game would have looked pretty similar to what we saw Saturday; roll outs, quick slants, etc. No way in hell would Ash have had the time to stand in the pocket and deliver deep balls which is what was needed to back off the safeties. Ash standing in the pocket waiting for a WR to break open is the last football anyone will see David Ash play if it is behind our current line. Those guys have to mature and play as a unit and that doesn't happen in a week.

You people are crazy. Ash is not a good quarterback.

Deep ball there with Ash? Ash is horrible on passes over 10 yards.
Ash had like 600 yards passing against North Texas in HORIZONTAL yards. All day long, 2 yard sideline passes. We win in a blowout because its horribad North Texas.

Ash's entire career is to pile up stats on inferior opponents, and then get annihilated against the good teams. He had a good game against Oregon State in 2012, but other that that I have been unimpressed with him. He is the QB that goes 3 for 3 on a series but doesn't get a first down. He is horribly inaccurate on anything over 10 yards. He falls apart when pressured. He commits a large number of "herp derp" plays (e.g. blowing the shutout against North Texas). Mack kept going with Ash because he had more long term upside, but that upside never materialized.

Swoops might be an upgrade in the long run, but we'll see.

To answer the original question. No. Ash would have been annihilated by BYU.

Uh, how many games did Ash play in last year? He just redshirted. I guess Strong is a dumbmotherfucker for starting him.

Please proceed with more stupid posts

He would have done the same thing as last year. Performed to a so-so level until BYU started moving the ball at will, then forced bad passes/scrambles to try to get us back into the game. All the while, we continue to run the ball 80% of the time on first down and average about a yard per carry, making Ash try to come up with genius "2nd and 9" plays, and he gets another concussion for trying to turn a 2-yard gain into a 3-yard gain.

It wouldn't have mattered if VY was out there. We just don't have the supporting cast this year in the trenches. And that's squarely on the staff that left us with this pile of guys.

Ash is no Heisman mention but i would not call him "not a good QB"...

He had more than just a good game vs. the beavers, he showed poise, leadership, toughness and talent...and was the difference in that game.

His absence vs BYU was a factor.

    Think. Understand.

He scored two TDs against BYU last year. How many did the entire team score this year?
