Permian lost to Lubbock Coronado last night. Coronado had a kicker line up for a 48 yard field goal and Permian called time out just in time as the kid drilled it. So he had to rekick and drilled it again He made an earlier field goal before the half. But that is not all Permian led 14-12 with 4 seconds left in the game. Coronado lines up for a 54 yarder and the kid wins the game with no time left. Might want to take a look at this kid

I agree with Dillohorn. Kept his cool and let the Permian "adults" waste a timeout.

    Mojo,

Sounds like a great prospect. Problem is that the young man kicked it from 54 yards, which means the line of scrimmage was the 37. Are you giving me hope that Shawn Watson's offense can get us that close to an opponents goalline?

I guess maybe a fumble or kickoff return?

i think it is safe to say that Shawn Watson's offense will get us to within 37 yards many many times in the coming years.

    mop,

Your do realize that to be within 37 yards for the kicker, we have to reach the OPPONENT'S 20 yard line. I would believe that the defense could get a turnover that close, but nothing we have seen, nor anything in Watson's history would make me believe he could get the offense that close.

If, however, you are referring to "scoring" as in "screwing', then maybe KornFerry can help the Watson since they have so much experience at "screwing" our university.

The wind and air are different out there.

Rick McIvor never could quite figure it out here, you may recall.

And the elevation out there is 3,000 feet. Their 54 yards is our 45.

We wont have to fret later if we "let this one get away"

Bryce Crawford comes in next year and he'll break all the records for FG kickers here AND marry Jeff Wards daughter, I predict.

PS-Great fight after that Coronado (Lubbock)/ Odessa game. Nothing has changed out there. Mayhem with pom=poms.

9 yards difference at 3,00 ft elevation?
The three longest field goals in NCAA history were not kicked at altitude. Our own Russell Erxleben kicked one of them. I was at the game in Austin. Coach Royal had us take a 5 yard penalty to give Russell a chance at the record. The game was well in hand at the time.

I was there too --- at the Rice game.

IIRC, it was a 67 yarder, an NCAA FBS record (Ove Johannsen at Abilene Christian had kicked the longest in football at ANY level at 69 yards the previous year). Seems like the crowd at first went silent as the Horns went into field goal try formation, with a bunch of us pointing to the field shaking our heads and kind of chuckling. I was speechless --- the line of scrimmage was just barely on Texas' side of the field, 10 yards for the endzone, 50 yards of field to the line of scrimmage, then 7 yards for the holder. Erxleben's holder was at the Texas' 43. Erxleben was standing before the snap at about the Texas 41. It was as though Texas was lined up in the wrong direction.

An amazing site. Then the kick, Erxleben hit it straight on and true. I think he would have made it from Texas' 40.

Erxleben's NCAA FBS record held for a couple of weeks, when Steve LIttle of piggy --- AGAINST UT --- kicked a 67 yarder, tying Erxleben.

The SWC had three once-in-a-lifetime trio of great field goal kickers in 1977: Erxleben-UT, Franklin-aggy, and Little-piggy.

In 1976 Franklin, a barefoot kicker, set the NCAA all-levels record at 65 yards, then on the same day Johanssen bested him, Franklin holding the record for only part of the day. But Franklin kicked a 64 yarder in the same game against Baylor (see below re: Teaff), the only kicker to ever kick two 60+ yarders in the same game.

Grant Teaff, Baylor's head coach worked to get changes made to reduce the advantage of having a good field goal kicker playing against his beloved Bears. Turd.

The NCAA eliminated the use of a tee (e.g., Erxleben used one) and had the line of scrimmage for a missed field goal that went out of the endzone to be spotted at the last line of scrimmage instead of the 20.

Of the trio of outstanding SWC kickers, only Franklin went on to anything of note at the next level, doing well at the Eagles and Patriots.

Little played with the Cardinals, didn't do too well, eventually cut after about three years. Later in the day after being cut, Little had a serious car wreck, resulting in him being left a quadrapalegic. He died at the young age of 43.

I won't go into Erxleben's history; think we all know about his problems.

Johansson's kick was at 1,800 ft and with a 50 MPH North wind behind him, just like Franklins kicks.

Erxe's was on a calm day and would have gone through from 75 at high altitude and wind.

Nick Rose had a good night kicking tonight. Two for two, one from 45 and the game winner with 7 seconds left. No doubt his best game of the year.

Well EXCUSE me My point was that Texas took a five yard penalty in order to give him a shot at the record. I guess I should not have named the coach if I was not SURE.

If we don't look at him, OU and probably KSU will.

I forgot to mention he was a junior. Permian had a kicker back in the seventies that kicked a 63ydr named Russell Wheatly. Permian beat Lonview the number 1 team in the state 10-9.

Well... The most impressive kick I ever witnessed was by Phil Dawson against Virginia. For those of you that don't recall, Texas was driving north to south as the clock was winding down. I believe the score was 15-14 UVA and, probably to everyone's surprise, UT chose to try a 50 yard FG into a very strong wind. While I am not sure, it might have been a steady 15 mph, with gusts much higher. Frankly, a 50 yard FG into that wind was a pipe dream.

My buddy was sitting in section 2, about 72 rows up, so he had a good view of whether or not the kick would reach the goal posts. What I remember is that Dawson knocked the crap out of the ball but, he kicked it high. My buddy told me that the ball reached the goal posts and seemed to hover, spinning. Of course, it dropped through, past the cross bar, and Texas won 17-15.

It was improbable and unbelievable. Afterward, my wife and I were emotionally drained.

^^^^This. I was there and the Virginia folks sitting in our section were celebrating because none of them thought there was even a snowball's chance in hell of PD miking that 50 yarder into the wind. Yes, they were very shocked and sad afterward. [IMG]
