Obama's support of higher speed Internet

Wants higher speed Broadband especially in rural America.
Says it will create jobs and allow local businesses to grow.

Do those people even study the habits of people online?
What this can assist in is the decimination of Forwarded Emails of the kind I routinely receive from deep in the Piney Woods of East Texas, and that represent the grape vine across America.
Improving that will not be favorable to Capital Hill. I doubt seriously any government would want to support and expand that -- so obviously those emails have escaped scrutiny. But where gov't control is involved, making sense of it isn't a prerequisite.

BO, in parallel, is also encouraging FCC to preempt laws in 19 states that he says stifle competition for high-speed Internet service. An estimated 1 in 5 households do not have access to hi-speed Internet. (according to WH reports).

This more than likely is connected to efforts to regulate the Internet and classify it as a utility of sorts that would bring it under tighter control, spelled taxes.

By the way, since when is it the business of a President to get involved in one hundred million aspects of Life in America? Will this guy find a way to drive all of us completely nuts before he finally leaves office?

A list of potential things he may have planned to announce at public shows in weeks to come, maybe one per week I guess:

Regulate the best RGB formula for rainbow colors used in public school hallways

Designated federal guidelines for widths of parking spaces

Designated federal guidelines for widths of painted lane markers down highways

Federal requirements for the sounds made by a slammed car door, front house door and back door or kitchen door

Audio regulations on volumes of sounds of flushed toilets in public venues such as restaurants, fast foot outlets and lobbies in hotels

Federal support for deviations of average mean temperatures with guidelines for when that constitutes a hardship especially for minorities and tied to annual income

Federally mandated start times for grade school, middle and high school in school districts where such times may handicap families, tied to 13 demographic and socio-economic measures

Federally mandated measurements by calorie count, sugar and salt content, of all foods in excess of 4 oz, served outside any food service that does not seat over 30 according to local fire safety regulations

Federally regulated tension on swing doors of all shops, stores, businesses that service more than 10 customers per day

(My favorite) Federally regulated DB levels in movie theaters, not to exceed that of the first 50 rows of a NASCAR race. Or that within 100 yards behind the takeoff of a commercial airliner or fighter jet. This might be the only useful idea from now to Jan 2017

Federally required size, shape and spill-proof center of gravity on drinking tumblers in households with children under the age of 39 months (I think an arbitrary number of months, who knows). This one carries a fine of $850 per infraction and a 2% penalty on the tax return for the year in which it occurs

On all of these there is a tax to be computed somewhere, and a minimum of 2,675 pages in the Federal Register per regulation, with required updates annually, and a budget for implementation to include a minimum of 585 new federal employees for each regulation, and to include full benefits, travel expense, home allowance, car allowance, Pre-K thru 12th grade school voucher allowance, and 3 weeks vacation for managers and directors at the Bahamas Atlantis Hotel, with budget of $1.23 million for accommodations and film crews, art direction and skit writers. Regular staff to receive 15 annual days paid leave and $750 vacation expense.

All under the Executive Branch of government.

I guess the one caveat that I will add is that a return of manufacturing to the US will dramatically improve the economies of small towns. This will be especially true in the south where unions are less prevalent.

    Hornius,

The lack of high speed internet isn't what's hurting small towns, and high speed internet isn't going to bring them back to life. Poor transportation infrastructure, poor healthcare infrastructure, poor education system, severe competition from large businesses (such as Wal Mart), poor quality of life, etc.- that's what's hurting small towns. No business of significant size is going to want to operate in a **** hole town overrun with toothless rednecks (unless it caters to toothless rednecks, which is why Wal Mart thrives) and crappy schools, crappy roads, and crappy hospitals. It wouldn't matter if it had Google Fiber internet service.

On a somewhat related noted, if Obama wanted to improve internet service in the US in general by promoting competition, that actually might be a laudable goal. You all do know you get hosed on internet service, right? The US has some of the slowest but most expensive internet service in the developed world. It's pitiful.

For example, Time Warner Cable offers 50 MB/s service for $64.99 per month, not counting fees and taxes. I pay 19 Euros (about $24) which is inclusive of all taxes and fees per month for 100 MB/s service that includes home phone service. Yes, I know you can beat my speed with Google Fiber (for a hell of a lot more money), but that's not available in most areas.

Competition is already lowering prices, increasing speeds and improving service. The more companies enter into the market with new and different ways to connect to the internet the better for everyone. Just get the government out of it!

So is government involvement going to help competition? Are they going to make the market more free? The answer to that question can't be what is intended. There has to be a predictive analysis about what actually would happen if the proposed regulations take place.

FDR enacted many regulations in the 30s to increase farm prices. When the real outcome of his laws was throwing poor poultry sellers in jail.
