We really need better terminology because there is no "the spread". We might run a spread. We might use a lot of formations that do spread out the offense and thus the defense while not necessarily using the same philosophy that usually goes along with "the spread".
I don't know what the f**k we've been running since 2010. 7 year olds with sticks and bottle caps could draw up a more coherent offense.
I thought this was a Mack Brown philosophy that he wanted to install at Texas after we lost to Bama. Is Charlie talking about Bama's Kiffin Offense or Bama's offense during hits title years?
It's ironic because the way Charlie attacks on defense is through multiple looks and dictating to the offense. He's stated that's his philosophy in more elaborate wording. It would seem he'd fully understand the necessity to do the same thing these days on offense when attacking a defense. Cause confusion with multiple formations, attack at a fierce rapid pace, and dictate to the defense. Maybe he is coming around to that, but what I saw in 2014 was nothing resembling the way he approaches defense. Hopefully what is being said on the coming offensive changes is an attempt to match his defensive ways.
BTW, as said above the spread is a very generic term as there are many variations of it. All that's needed to make the term more applicable is change "the" to "a". If people simply said we are implementing "a spread" it would be less indicative of that form of offense being exclusive to a specific style, implementation, and usage.
Based on the little that I have heard from Watson, he is dedicated to first running the ball 50% of the time. What plays he runs will depend upon the strengths of the players that are there and the blocking match-ups that exist with the opponents that he is playing. If he is down to just Heard running the offense, then the plays that he will call will depend on how well JH has adapted to the current offensive play book. He will add whatever is needed to take advantage of the QB proficiency that is there. If he has a QB like Murray, then he will run whatever it takes to compensate for his lack of height. and the plays that he thinks will best fit KM's attitude and strengths. He will not fit a square into a round hole.
tOSU runs the "power" spread. We just an athletic QB who can improvise and make smart decisions. Sounds easy, huh?
Oh I think Watson has a long history of trying to force square pegs into round holes. IMO, he's the poster boy for stubborn and simplistic. There were a few aspects when we spread out that TS showed promise in during the season, yet Watson refused to go back to them with any resemblance of regularity.
^^ What promise for a spread, Brad, other than maybe running, which Watson could not have asked him to do? If you were to take out the option of him running when some yards were there, was there anything about a spread that he seemed better suited to?
TS better suited to running a spread, not my words. He showed flashes of promise when we sped up the offense, used multiple receivers, and shortened the passing route tree to get the ball out of his hands quickly. Specifically a stretch during UCLA game. And the threat to run is a part of that advantage when doing so with TS. Not saying at all he was better suited to it, just that he had some success doing additional things besides what we continued to force in a very predictable manner. That being said, TS did nothing above average and most below. He was most often a half-second slow on decisions almost all season. I'm certainly not defending the play of TS in any way. But I am saying Watson could have done more to create mismatches with varied alignment, motion, and even taking TS's mind out of the mix with speeding him up at times. Unless some believe TS just wasn't capable for anything more and even a Chad Morris couldn't have schemed any better for him. Not that much of it would've made a remarkably huge difference no matter what offense we ran. TS is not and won't be the man for the job and the o-line was crippled. And this is the past thank God. Mulling it over won't make a shred of difference.
I love how people blame Fred Akers for everything. Darrel royal recruited Ted Constanzo...A hell of a passer.....and thought he would make him a wishbone qb.....pretty much because Constanzo was one of Dave Campbell's "Friday Night Heros"...,, As much as it pains me Switzers...."guitar picker" comment wasn't too far off! Akers did at least, "unleash Earl"......the most innovative thing in Texas offense in many years....
