OK. I may be losing weight over here, but I was enlisted to make a TON of Brownies for my daughter's post prom. Naturally, I won't do brownie mixes, but I've never quite gotten that perfect brownie recipe. That is....until....The Barefoot Contessa made her "outrageous brownies" on the show. I decided to make these delectable wonders, and did so. Not only were they a huge hit with the Senior Class, but I did manage to bring some into the office--the co-workers went ga-ga. This weekend, I baked a huge batch for a graduation party. I have to tell you, I NEED to share this recipe to pass it on. If any of you are a true brownie affectionado(sp), you HAVE to bake these. They are, hands down, the best brownies in the universe! 1 pound unsalted butter 1 pound plus 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips, divided 6 ounces unsweetened chocolate 6 extra-large eggs 3 tablespoons instant coffee powder 2 tablespoons real vanilla extract 2 1/4 cups sugar 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided (1 cup for batter and 1/4 cup in the chips and nuts) 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 3 cups diced walnut pieces Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 13 by 18 by 1 1/2-inch sheet pan. Melt together the butter, 1 pound chocolate chips, and unsweetened chocolate on top of a double boiler. Cool slightly. Stir together the eggs, instant coffee, vanilla and sugar. Stir in the warm chocolate mixture and cool to room temperature. Stir together 1 cup of the flour, baking powder and salt. Add to cooled chocolate mixture. Toss the walnuts and 12 ounces of chocolate chips with 1/4 cup flour to coat. Then add to the chocolate batter. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until tester just comes out clean. Halfway through the baking, rap the pan against the oven shelf to allow air to escape from between the pan and the brownie dough. Do not over-bake! Cool thoroughly, refrigerate well and cut into squares.
ummmm...I know what ingredient you are "reefer-ing" to. Not gonna do it for those kids. I'm sure most of them took care of that ingredient before the brownies!
The Link i had something like the linked ones before, i think. i'm going to test this recipe and find out. they were allsome. the recipe in the OP sounds phenomenal. I LOVE the coffee addition.
The coffee is essential. It really brings out the flavor of the chocolate. Make sure you do use the instant coffee though.
That sounds great but if you want something a little easier that is also very tasty try this....... Buy two of those cheap pouches of brownie mix. I bought some dark chocolate flavor. Mix one bag and pour into baking dish. Lay Symphony Toffee candy bars in the pan to cover the first layer of mix. Mix the other pouch and pour over the candy bars. Bake until done. The candy bars and toffee melt in between the layers of brownie mix making them very rich and delicious. Tasty, cheap and easy.
As soon as I saw your thread title, I thought about Ina Garten's "Outrageous Brownies", which we have made a few occasions. I was prepared to argue with whatever recipe you set out! Your are 100% correct.
no nuts in brownies, come on also, barnabys in houston makes a badass brownie. served with sweet cream ice cream i think. its badass.
I made the exact version cited in Drag's post. Good holy Lord those were the freaking richest, sweetest brownies I've ever had. I made the devastating mistake of cutting a large one and serving it with vanilla ice cream. Serving size equaled approximately one square inch. I thought I was going to throw up. They were good, though.
