So a few details are floating out on how Santa Claus plans to provide free community college. One way is eliminating tax free withdrawals on 529 plans. I would like to hear how resident liberals do not think this is a tax on the middle class. The Link Effectively this would eliminate the plans as nobody would continue to invest in them. Oh, but the rhetoric gets his freeloading base to vote for him.
So BO wants to tax a plan that over 12 million ( they all can't be "rich) parents etc have put money of their own toward to send their child to college so other kids can go to college FREE ( using other people's money) and the freakin idiot doesn't understand that his stealing money from hardworking people who want a better life for their kids will result in the 529 program to dry up? Knowing it won't get through Congress did BO only tout this stupid plan to excite the ones who think BO will give them more free stuff?
Give him credit for at least wanting to pay for it. Were he a Republican, he'd be promising that it would pay for itself.
I wouldn't get too worked up about this. He's just throwing stuff out there that he knows wont go anywhere with this congress. That way when people bring up higher education cost problems he can say " I tried to do something about that but the republicans obstructed." Just political theatre.
larryt You are correct. He knows it won't go anywhere but how will it effect the people who thought they were going to get something more free?
I guess it wont do much for them. As I pointed out in another thread, community college is damn cheap. You can take out loans, go to ACC, and graduate with a two year degree with less than 6k of debt. This idea of free community college is like saving cats not in trees.
This is one of these stupid *** populist ideas by Democrats that make for great sound bytes, put the GOP in an awkward position, but have almost zero substance. Same is true with the minimum wage and stupid equal pay crap. (No, I'm not saying equal pay is crap. I'm saying the politics of equal pay are crap. It's already illegal to pay someone less or take any adverse employment action because of sex, and yet the Ds just ignore that fact and talk as though the Civil Rights Act and Fair Pay Act never happened. It's like complaining that murder should be against the law.)
Aesop's Fable about the Grasshopper and the Ants comes to mind. I'm not especially conservative by the standards of this board, but honestly, I do identify with and root for the Ant. Taxing income on 529 plan withdrawals to pay for other people's college falls somewhere between misguided and evil.
You would have to define "kicked your ***" because I don't recall it being a landslide in either election, unless you look through Demo eyeglasses
Campaigning, golfing and lying is all he does......some would say the first and last are one and the same.
He kicked *** because there he got more "takers" to vote than the republicans got "producers" to vote. Unfortunately, the "takers" are now the majority.
"He kicked *** because there he got more "takers" to vote than the republicans got "producers" to vote." If this were true, then why did 8 out of the 10 "taking" states vote for the other guy in the last election?
Got a problem with the methodology or the findings? I agree there are more factors at play, just as the article states, but are you going to argue that the citizens of Alabama and Mississippi are "producers" in the grand scheme of things?
good political tactic by Obama: Something for nothing is always an easy sell. In other news, President Mugabe is in the process of reforming Zimbabwean agriculture and making it more equal. Of the 4,500 white farmers who made Rhodesia the breadbasket of africa, there are 300 left and his goon'governors are dispossessing them. Everybody in that beautiful country will be able to starve equally or go to South Africa where they will be treated unequally because they are not citizens and not welcome. Something about taking jobs from South Africans. Can't believe such a thing would be countenanced in such a progressive country.
Alabama plus Mississippi equals 15. Just pointing out the flaws in your illogical post. The facts are more Americans than ever - across the U.S. - receive federal aid. 128,000,000 are on the government teet and it has grown everyday under President Rob Peter to Pay Paul. The entire democratic platform relies on giving away food, education, healthcare and other perks to get votes. When not giving something away, it still relies upon promising goodies that either cannot possibly be paid for or that will never get through legislative hurdles. However, it does gin up the base.
II's correct If you read that link you see they included federal money for fed parks land military bases etc NOT just individuals. I have no doubt that many more per capita are getting benefits in Miss and Ala but if you just look at the numbers of individuals getting benefits Calif would likely lead Miss Al and La combined.. Not sure what 11;s point was since the OT was about BO thinking it was ok to tax middle class people 's college funds to pay for other funds.
"Alabama plus Mississippi equals 15. Just pointing out the flaws in your illogical post." Oh, so you just wanted me to list out the other 6 states from the "takers" list that voted for Romney. The ones that added up to an additional 41 electoral votes. Got it. I was using AL and MS as an example. If you're going to pretend that "producers" vote GOP, when time and time again it's proven to be incorrect, then I guess we're at an impasse. It's like the Rolling Stone article that followed people to Tea Party rallies in West Virginia, and over 25 percent of the attendees were on Medicare but said they didn't want government interference in their lives. "but if you just look at the numbers of individuals getting benefits Calif would likely lead Miss Al and La combined." Gee, that couldn't be because California has 5.5 times as many people as AL and MS, could it? The numbers from the article are per capita. Obviously, in a state of 38 million people, they're going to have more of pretty much anything, including takers. And my point, 67, was responding to ii's diatribe about "takers" vs. "producers." I agree that taxing 529 plans is insane and will cause them to go away.
11's point was to defend Obama by distracting away from the OP. He believes that takers vote for less government which explains why he is a democrat - uninformed is the largest percentage of their base.
"11's point was to defend Obama by distracting away from the OP." My response was to your takers vs. producers jab. If anything, your post was the one "distracting" from the OP. You're being disingenuous, as I've even stated I agree that getting rid of any tax incentive to put aside for 529's is stupid and will cause them to fail.
