So we flipped a 4-star from UCLA (Newsome) and a 3-star from Oregon (Locke) on signing day. EDIT: Adding the flip of Kai Locksley from FSU too (as it happened in the dead period). Great job, Charlie!!
Everything went according to plan and I couldn't be happier. Well I would have liked Soso but we got Warren. We needed one of the two.
Actually 3 late flips... One to replace Gentry, one to replace J.Johnson, and one to replace T.Irvin for kick returns. All needs taken care of. Terrific. Not many coaches can do what Charlie just did. Not from those 3 universities.
Also, lost in the whole hoopla is the fact that Charlie managed to prevent a flip from Davante Davis to Auburn or FSU. The former actually eased off on him a bit, but FSU seriously wanted him last friday but vaughn had closed the deal last Thursday with a trip to Miami when he literally babysat Davante to prevent Auburn encroachment and kept him pepped up against an expected FSU onslaught on Friday. I may be exaggerating a bit, but that is pretty much what happened. So much so that Davante tweeted all annoyed (probably at Vaughn for not letting him go), saying "I am committed to the University of Texas. can you all leave me alone?" on Friday. Of course, earlier we prevented OU poaching on Lampkin, Au$urn and Dad trying their best on Burt, and Michigan poaching on Charles. I mean, these are all excellent players that top programs wanted, that we held on to, or flipped from elsewhere. Take a bow, Charlie.
^^ i do not mean this as a criticism of Coach Strong. I only want to say i disagree with your statement. We're Texas. We're better than those universities. We should have at least a shot of flipping kids from anywhere, which Coach Strong successfully did. We are not Baylor brother. It should be an accomplishment to flip a player from us, not the other way around.
What an amazing job after such a difficult season. Imagine what these guys can do coming off a big year.
Here is an amazing factoid. @mikefinger Charlie Strong ended up adding six players within a week of signing day. From 2006-'11, Mack Brown added a total of four. That says it all about how little the previous staff used to do in the last week. He would have a top-10 class all wrapped up a year ahead and would just coast.
While true and keeping in mind that I am still respectful and gracious to Mack Brown, Charlie had more to overcome and in a different era/age (the digital). Mack was lucky to have a Heisman Trophy winner stay a Senior year and build from there. OU was not a powerhouse at the time nor were the Aggies (not that they are now). Charlie inherited a program not on the tip of tongues nor top tier in the media attention. He landed this class with a less than spectacular season, record wise. He endured a lot of negative recruiting by some douchey coaches, the constant barrage of Tweeter and other social media outlets and in a year we lost our bowl game. Consider me impressed. Besides, he does not strike me as the type to not be out on the trail, always working. We are so lucky to have Mack and Strong back to back. We are Texas. How was your day today, Guru?
I seen a stat that just shows how relentless Charlie is. He flipped 6 guys in the last two weeks before signing day. Mack Brown flipped 4 in the last two week of signing day from 2006 to 2013. Great job Charlie.
