Please don't ban me, but that's kid is the best true FR LB I have seen since the Boz. Only with a better head on his shoulders.
I can see why you would say that... I want to see Malik and Hager breaking and blowing up other teams as LB's for 4 seasons!
Agree. RickysRun- dude, we all seriously loves us some Malik but it mght be slightly a little early to be burning # 10 jerseys.... just sayin. OTOH - maybe my sarcasm meter is tuned way too low.....
Vince Young made his name the old fashioned way while on the 40 acres. He earned it. I love Malik's play and the chart blowing line you can draw from his quick start in terms of potential. Vince showed the same type of potential.(or similar due to position difference) Vince earned his spot forever in Texas Longhorn lore. Malik hopefully joins him with his play on the field and off going forward.
What I took from Malik's statements was the comparison that our teams the last ten years, have to the 2005 and the 2004 teams and their accomplishments. I may be wrong but his statements seemed more of a challenge that the new guys, the frosh, and the need to produce, perform and achieve (maybe an NC) now or in the near future so that people talk about the current teams and not fall back to pleasant memories and comparisons to VY and the 2004 and 2005 great seasons, or the 2008 and 2009 seasons when Colt was the lead guy. I didn't take it that we should stop talking about or remembering VY, that will never happen, just like we always remember James Street and the 1969 team. VY and team got us to talking about them and not only reflecting on the '69 NC. That was my take on it. They want their own greatness on the 40 acres and put an end to the now 5 year mediocrity drought.
Exactly, the kid simply inferred that this team needs to make a name for itself rather than living in the past. He was very clear to say he was in no way disrespecting VY.
Unfortunately chances are Malik will never see 4 seasons at Texas if he continues to develop like everyone hopes. He will be gone to the NFL after the 2017 season. Even with a rookie scale - still to much money on the table these days.
I think Malik was talking about the current team/players needing to let go of the past and create their own future, nothing to do with fans continuing to remember Vince. Along the lines of "Larry Bird is not walking through that door, fans. Kevin McHale is not walking through that door, and Robert Parish is not walking through that door."
Akers took a lot of heat for making a break from the DKR way of doing things. Mack had the nenefit of not immediately following a legemd, as does Malik and crew.
IMHO, when Malik finishes his time on the 40, we will be talking about him like we do about Nobis, DJ and the multitude of other Longhorn LBs.
