Canker Sores

I have a canker sore on the tip of my tongue. I get them ever now and then, but the tip of the tongue makes this one particularly bad. I've had it for about a week, and it still is occasionally excruciating. Like someone stabbing me with an icepick all the way through my tongue. I can't pronounce th, d, or t correctly, and I'm generally very frustrated that it's still here.

I've put topical goo on it from HEB and it stings for about 30 seconds -- so bad that I tear up -- then numbs it for about 20 minutes, then back to regular pain.

1)Why am I getting these things every other month or so?
2)What can I do to prevent them?
3)When I get one, what can I do to make it go away?

    Thanks

I'm really a pretty relaxed guy.

And it's summer and I'm a school teacher. I laze around all day every day -- and get paid for it. Right now I have no stress except for this infernal canker sore.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a chemical that is in virtually all toothpaste; it's what they use to make it bubbly. It is also terrible for canker sores. Look for a toothpaste without it. Since I switched, I get about 10% as many sores and they go away much faster (like a day or two).

    Here's a list of some

I use the Oral B, but I believe they renamed it something about "sensitive" something or other. Just check the ingredients when you're buying them.

Agree with the toothpaste thing. I have cut mine down about 50% using the special Rembrandt paste for canker sore sufferers. I'd recommend getting a prescription from your doctor or dentist for Kenalog-in-Orabase or the generic equivalent. This works pretty well if you apply it to a canker within the first 24 hours of its appearance. If you wait until the sore is well established, then you just have to ride it out.

Kenalog-in-Orabase is a sticky "paste" (for lack of a better word) that you apply to the sore and immediately surrounding areas right before bedtime. It will remind you of peanut butter sticking to your palate or inner cheek or tongue, and the tendency is to lick or scrape it off and swallow it. But just fight the temptation to do that and hit the sack so that it stays in contact with the sore overnight. If you catch a sore at the beginning, maybe two nights of this stuff will take care of it...it does for me.

I hear there is a new prescription drug called Apthasol (spelling?), but I haven't tried it.

Gargle warm salt water. And since I've been paying attention to vitamins, and taking plenty of vitamin C, I haven't noticed any...but I probably just jinxed myself.

Take L-Lysine amino acids, and eat Yogurt to get rid of them sooner.Eating peanuts and/or chocolate can cause an outbreak.

The generic equivalent would be "triamcinolone dental paste". The stuff works as an excellent painkiller for canker sores even if you start it late.
