I keep pointing out how ridiculous this argument is and you keep ignoring it, so let's try this one. Do you think that having six players out of 22 starters and 22 more on the two-deep that are NFL caliber is good? And if those players were so impactful as to be meaningful, wouldn't you expect the team to take a step back in talent when they left, with no comparable talent waiting to step up?
Prod (and I'll stop after this), Doesn't matter, We Are Texas and even if we had 85 HS FR, we should beat ISU. Don't you know putting together a winning team at the D1 level has nothing to do with talent or upperclassman. This ain't never happened to the other Elite teams. Not to Tennessee, USC, Mich, OU, ARK, Georgia, THE U, OSU. Oh, wait a minute it has. My bad . I do agree as much as I try to stay out of this I keep getting drawn back in
What if Iowa State went 3-9, lost every other game they played after that and fired their coach? Also, what if we were more talented than Iowa State? I know, I know, these hypotheticals are CRAZY! Also, what if, hypothetically, we do not just lose, but get blown out and shut out 24-0?
In 2007, Meatchicken lost to the AS Mountaineers at home. FWIW, Coach Lloyd Carr, who had won the Big Ten and had a solid winning record, "retired" later that season.
What's amazing about Mack's recruiting misses at QB is how lucky he was that Colt turned into a great one and right off the bat. Colt wasn't that highly rated or recruited. If that didn't pan out our QB drought would have been far worse. I think Strong now has a really good OC that fits the conference unlike Watson. I thought Norvell did a good job considering and hope he stays.
Michigan finished 5-7 in the 2014 season and fired their coach. Only three players from that Michigan team were chosen in the subsequent NFL draft. The cupboard was bare, man! Jim Harbaugh was hired, immediately lit up the recruiting trail like a supernova, and willed the 2015 team to a 9-3 finish in his first regular season (ranked #14 in the final CFP ranking). Some people were hoping for a “splash” hire like that at Texas. It didn’t happen. It is what it is.
Yeah probably. I may be in the minority here, and I wish our Longhorns well in their pro careers, but I don't care what happens in the NFL. I want trophies in Austin.
The article points out the obvious, and there isn't anything in it that I haven't mentioned on her before. And once again, it's not very smart to try to compare what other coaches did or have done after taking over programs, every situation is different.
Wonder what Florida is going to do next season with all those yearly entrants to the NFL??? I guess they go 5-7.
Thanks Ratt, You saved me from the other 15 new hires to counter Michigan. How many kids were kicked off and how many freshman did Harbaugh play.
I think we can all agree that the ISU loss was (pick your adjective, or feel free to suggest one) nauseating, disgusting, humiliating, miserable, heinous, immoral, sadistic, masochistic, crazy, pathetic, pathological, pathos, where's mommy, etc.
When you can’t come up with an actual counter-argument to what Harbaugh has accomplished at Michigan, just say that it’s dumb to compare Charlie to him. Got it.
Such BS. Almost all of our starters the last 2 years were offered by OU, Atm, and Baylor.....etc. So the talent to at least perform in the 8-4 area is there. Besides you don't need to pay someone 5 million to make Texas 5-7. I reckon 150 Texas high school coaches who won their district could of accomplished that, for about 250k.
It's odd how less michigan players got themselves kicked off when their coach set less strigent rules for them to follow. Funny how that works.
I don't follow the details of the program that closely these days. A search turns up these 9 guys that were kicked off by Strong: Kennedy Estelle Kendall Sanders Joe Bergeron Leroy Scott Chet Moss Montreal Meander Jalen Overstreet Chevoski Collins Deoundrei Davis Some of these guys were given multiple chances to follow the rules and couldn't. To me the most glaring spots on the team are quarterback, defensive line, and offensive line. I agree Kennedy Estelle was a loss, but other than that which ones would have made an impact?
I believe that Michigan started a lot of upper class men. Having said that , their recruiting was not so great under Brady Hoke, but maybe it helped to have a lot of older players starting. Having said that, Harbaugh is kicking *** on the recruiting trail unlike Strong. Harbaugh also made a serviceable qb unlike anything Strong and co. have done.
Yes. Ive said it for 2 years. See "rehasing the same things." All I am saying is, if you set those high standards, you have to own it. You cannot use your own higher standards that caused you to have fewer players as an excuse for having fewer players. Charlie had a plan to tear down what was here and start over. Hopefully his plan bears fruit in 2016. However, the losses in 2014 and 2015 are Strong's fault for tearing it down (and hiring Watson). He cannot be excused for the strategy he chose pursue. Now you want to know something? If his strategy pays off and he makes Texas football great again like most of us hope he does, Charlie Strong will get all the credit. That has not happened yet, but hopefully it will in 2016. Also, to wideawake, I think 2 other linemen left the program. I had the article awhile ago, but did not think this same debate would go on for two years. If anyone can confirm or deny that, that would be great.
all this over something in Texas Monthly? It is about as authoritative as their restaurant reviews You guys need to give it a break. CS is our coach for now. When he got the talent at Louisville he did real good. When he gets the talent at Texas he will do real good. When Royal had good talent he won national championships
I hear you brother. Good post, and yeah I am frustrated too. Some of my concerns, as much as I love Mack, was the appearance of some players to act a fool during the last year's of his career here so I admit some of my love for Charlie is seen through rose colored glasses
And his last season was 5-5 after a 10-2 previous year. So was it coaching or lack of lighting up the recruiting trail? How much of the available talent and injuries caused the unacceptable demise of our Horns his last year?
