Is it just me (boy does that leave me open for incoming fire from the usual suspects) or is anyone else getting tired of reading about our great, new Texas recruiter du jour? Didn't we hear that Rumph was connected in Florida (and he may be), that Norvell was a great recruiting addition, that Traylor had strong connections to the high school coaches in Texas, that Gilbert is well connected, that Clint Hurtt is the guy, and so on. My point it that these coaches are obviously transient. They move on, take other jobs, or get canned. The latest rumor has to do with Traylor as Joe Fan has reported.

My point is this: I really hope that the HC, that Charlie Strong, is out best recruiter. If not, he needs to become that, and fast. And he needs to connect with the high school coaches in Texas, yesterday. Otherwise, when Traylor leaves, or Gilbert leaves, or Norvell leaves, so will some if not many of the players "they" recruited. This is a problem every school faces, you say? I wonder. Does Saban, or Meyer, Harbaugh, Fisher, Malzahn, Miles, Stoops, Peterson, Briles, Sweeney, Dantonio, and so on face the same level of vulnerability that we appear to face if we lose our "connection?"

First and foremost, kids need to want to come here because of Charlie Strong. He needs to possess the cachet. Perhaps he does. But from what I read, one has to wonder.

If "what you read" matters then you probably consider the writer in your analysis. Plenty of writers with pro Miles, Stoops, Briles leanings have reasons to criticize Strong and no relationship with coaches and this is his alamo year are easy and unverifiable criticisms, Funny that Strong beat big game Bob and Briles this year but no break from the play for us because Strong is wrong........

PS from what I read most people must be wrong. Hard to say who.

LD, perhaps I did not do a good job of expressing my point, which was that the key to successful recruiting is the guy at the top. The other coaches to whom I referred have, in my judgment, enough cachet to pull in the top recruits and probably do not have to lean "heavily" on others in their organizations to succeed on NSD.

Traylor does seem to be the star of the staff right now, but when I looked at the current 2016 commitments listed on Horns247, I only saw his name listed by 2 - Demarco Boyd and Peyton Aucoin. While it's disappointing to potentially lose staff members to better opportunities (not lateral moves), I think that is a good sign. You always want great people working for you that have high aspirations.

I didn't actually count, but my impression was that Jay Norvell and Brick Haley actually are the primary or secondary recruiters with the most commitments. From the Twitter pics that get posted, it seems like Brian Jean-Mary and Charlie are the ones in the homes with the recruits most.

While there is a lot of disagreement on this board about Charlie's core values for the team, I think that is something that works well with parents. I'm sure a lot of factors go into selecting a school, but it doesn't hurt to have the parents on board with Charlie.

I really would like to see a good February for the horns but it is so hard to find much at this point. When we sit at 50th in many services but seem to be in the mix for a few "big names" I feel very uneasy (but hopeful). Would like to have had a bowl game to dwell on instead of back ground noise.
