per 247sports: "...Now the Cougars have a five-star at quarterback as well. Tuesday, Houston landed Texas A&M transfer Kyle Allen, a former five-star prospect and the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the 2014 247Sports Composite. He should fit in well with the Cougars, who have one more year from likely Heisman Trophy candidate Greg Ward Jr., who would start during Allen’s transfer season, then would get Allen as a potential starting quarterback in 2017...." Worsterman, I've posted before that: 1) that's there location 2) their hand sign is 3 fingers 3) their hand sign forms a "W" Thus, years ago, I dubbed them "University of Third Ward". What else could the hand sign represent?
54, Maybe their new coach will run a pro style offense. Maybe they can hire Bill O'Brien or Bill Callahan for Allen. I wish the young man the best, but not knowing who your coach will be isn't a good choice. An old coach, whom I didn't much like, did The University of Texas a huge favor when he told a HS running back from Bridge City to never choose a school because of the coach, since chances were great that that coach would not be there for his entire playing career. Hence, Steve Wooster, who really liked OA Phillips, and whose HC was close friends with Bum, chose Texas over University of Third Ward and the wishbone was born.
aggy gets Knight. Cougar High gets Allen. blowU gets Murray. And we get?????????????? I take it we're gonna sit pat and hope Shane Buechele is the Second Coming of Colt?
Whose to say Herman doesnt kill it next year and decides, "What the hell, I own this city! I can has ALL the Houston area recruits!" If UH ponies up the money, with the low cost of living etc, he may just decide to turn UH into Miami II.
I don't think Tom Herman is a guy that will settle for scraps when he can have the whole enchilada. He's worked at Texas and at Ohio State, the two schools with the largest athletic budgets in the country. He's seen how things work and the bright lights. Why would he settle for playing in front of 25,000 when he could be on national tv and in a stadium with 100,000? There may be people out there who have no aspirations to rise to the top of their profession, but I seriously doubt that Tom Herman is in that category. Houston will always be a double digit choice for blue chips, and have an academic ranking after Rice, Texas A&M, SMU, Baylor, and possibly TCU & Tech. It is no one's dream job.
Herman just took UH to 13-1 and beat FSU in his first season. The whole enchilada is winning the NC, period. You think UH isnt going to be ranked in the top 10 to start the year next year? They arent going to be underestimated. Mark my words, if UH goes undefeated next year, they are in the playoff. And thats what counts. And again, Houston is one of the top 3 or 4 recruiting grounds in the nation, and the academic standards arent prohibitive. Herman could win multiple national titles at UH. Not saying he will, but he has every resource he needs to be able to.
Hmmmm, so no sense of humor. My bad. I thought the discussion was about UH going undefeated in 2016 and future, being top ten when the season starts with a 0-0 record, winning an NC and so on. Think about it, or don't.
Pardon me for not getting your humor. Everything is speculation at this point, but to just assume that UH is a bottom feeder and always will be is incredibly naive. If Im looking at UHs prospects for next year and ours, I have to go with UH. They can definitely win all their games next year in that conference, and they earned quite a bit of cache with their bowl win. Herman isnt a lock to leave UH, especially if he repeats his success this year. Another 13-1 season, whether they make the playoffs or not, and hes rolling even more than he is now. Hes already pulling top recruits to UH. The only downside he has is the conference, but if Herman can get UH into the playoff, which an undefeated season I think would make very possible given that UH should be ranked in the top 15 to start the year, then all bets are off.
No problem 2003Tex. My thought on UH and the playoffs is, can a non P5 conference and not ND get into the playoffs even if undefeated?
3 of the 4 playoff teams this year had a loss. UH would need that to happen again to make their way in next year, imo. If you have 3 no-loss P5 conference champs and a one-loss B1G or SEC champ, I think UH's chances are slim. It really depends on who else is in contention for the playoff spots and how easily UH beats teams in conference.
If Herman continues to succeed at UH there's no way he stays unless they join a Power Five Conference. I say he's gone after this season unless they melt down in the fall.
The conference strength is the only drawback they have. If they start the season ranked high enough and go undefeated, they will have a very compelling case for making the 4 team playoff. Of course its a hypothetical situation, but Herman is in the drivers seat as long as he wins.
Based on the committee's ranking system and the members of the committee... I am unsure whether a team outside of the power 5 (excluding Notre Dame and maybe even BYU) can even get in the playoff. We will not know until there is an undefeated non power 5 team with a solid schedule. U of H next year may very well be the test case.
Herman may very well leave after next season, but that's not a foregone conclusion. He has the resources (primarily fertile recruiting grounds) to be extremely successful at UH. He has a top 25 recruiting class currently, which is unprecedented at a G5 school. He's being paid $3mm next year, and UH will surely pay more to keep him. And he just convinced Kyle Allen to come to UH to play for him, which Allen can't do until 2017. No telling what he told Allen, but it was enough to convince Allen to pass on other options. Herman seems sincere in his desire to build a program, not just a spectacular season. We'll see where he ends up next January, but there's a decent chance he's still in Htown. As for the CFP, UH could definitely be the test case for G5 schools next year. It's certainly no given that UH can go undefeated, but if they do, they will have beaten OU and Louisville. If those teams have successful conference runs, it will be hard to keep UH out of the playoff (barring several undefeated P5 champions).
I didnt know UH plays OU. Thats the linchpin right there. If UH beats OU and remains undefeated, I think they are in. Solid non conference schedule and beating everyone in their conference. Id love to see it. Especially because OU sucks of course.
herman wont stay at UH. the only chance they have of keeping him is if UH gets in the big 12 and texas will never let that happen. he flirted with south carolina but wisely held out for a better job. he floated his name out for georgia but never received traction--had georgia offered him he would have been gone in a heartbeat. it's reasonable to say that within the next 2-3 years UT, A&M, and LSU will all be open. herman will end up at one of those three.
I agree with this, if UH schedules and beat P5 teams, that will make heads turn and it they finish with 13-0 including a win in the CCG, what would be the argument to keep them out? However, if they schedule and lose to P5s, they won't come close to a playoff nod from "the committee". Scheduling and winning against P5s are the key for them. If so, can replace Baylor with UH? Actually, as I recall, UH has been lobbying the B12 to join, but the issues were attendance at home games, student attendance (IIRC), and at the time the facilities. Looked it up: 09/03/2016 - Oklahoma (at NRG Stadium) 2019 at Oklahoma
Joe, Most of the media types will give some amount of discount to a win over OU as being a "home win", when indeed it will be a road game. OU's two largest alumni clubs are Houston and Dallas. Playing in Reliant, I strongly suspect that that there will be fewer than 15,000 Third Ward fans and 55-60,000 OU fans.
A win over OU is still a win over OU. Of course, they MUST win that game and go undefeated to have a shot at the playoff. But its possible. And I think they are in if they do those two things. Assuming of course OU doesnt **** the bed next season and has another 5-7 type year. If OUs only loss were to be to UH (and Texas ) then UH is in if they run the table.
^ the powers that be made it clear in 2008 and 2015 that if OU loses to Texas, that loss does not count as far as rankings go so if Texas were to beat OU next year, it should not hurt U of H.
It's apparent that you don't care about the facts; you just enjoy denigrating UH, while tinting your comments with a racial veneer. (I know, I know. It's not racial--it's simply geographical. Right? If you believe that, then you're the only one.) I get it. It's your prerogative; it's a message board; fire away. It just makes you look petty, at best. If you cared to pay attention, you would realize that UH had 40,000 in attendance this year for teams that are much less appealing draws than OU. Sure, 40,000 doesn't compare to 100,000, but UH is on the verge of a potential sea change, both athletically and academically. Maybe Herman bolts next year, and UH is again scrambling to pick up the pieces. But UH has made a commitment to success that it's never made before. It's not 1985 anymore. The future is brighter than it has been in years for UH (maybe ever), even if you choose to belittle it.
