Per the Baylor Board, it was posted that Travis Mays was one of the candidates that interviewed for the SMU Head Coaching position, can anyone confirm this info. Would hate to see him go if he was offered the spot, but would be a good move for him.

I am among the wondering. I really hope Travis does get a good head coaching job soon because I know it is what he wants and he has earned his chance.

Yep, there were a lot good job openings this year. So if he doesn't get a good opportunity he's probably going to have to wait a little longer. I hope that he gets that opportunity but will be sad to see him go because he has very good recruiting connections.

It looks like Coach Mays will be the Head coach at SMU. Sad to see him go but congrats to him and I wish him well. Hopefully Coach Aston finds a quality replacement.

Man that's the best/saddest new's I've gotten all day. So sad to see him go, but so happy for him to get an opportunity at a quality institution.

Next thought would be who replaces him. I would imagine that we go get a great. Could be a chance to get Edwina back on campus, maybe even opens the door to get Clarissa back on staff.

Aston starting to develop quite a coaching tree. Not the worst thing in the world

I think Edwina would be great- combining guard coaching and recruiting. But here again, I really want what is best for Edwina at this stage in her career. I do not claim any insight on this.

Clarissa would be a great hire. But does she want to get back into college coaching?

Congrats to Coach Mays! I wonder how this effects the recruitment of Rellah Boothe...

Great news for Coach Mays. With the upward trend of the women's program, Coach Aston should have a plethora of interested candidates. One question - does Washington, Tina Thompson or the new coach angle for the Associate Head Coach title?

Also - gonna miss the bow ties.

Congrats to Coach Mays. It should be a great opportunity for him in Dallas.

I would think we would need someone to work with the guards. Edwina would be nice, but don't forget that Jamie Carey (Colorado) may be looking for a job with the firing of the coach and hiring of a new one and Tai Dillard is coaching at UofH and has several years of coaching experience as well.

And, of course, there's others not from Texas. Right now, with the way Texas is moving up, this should be a prime coaching spot.

Congratulations to Travis. Sad to see him go, but that's how it works! Coach Aston will have to find a very experienced person to take his place. Hopefully someone with Texas ties as well!!!

Tyler Summit has resigned at La Tech. Wonder if DeMoss would consider returning to Texas?

DeMoss didn't even last with Coach G. She doesn't have any ties to Texas. JMO, but that wouldn't be a good hire at all.

Congrats to Travis! He has been an assistant coach for a long time both at Texas and LSU. At Texas, I know he was in charge of coaching the guards, but I don't know for sure which recruits he was specifically responsible for signing.

As for a possible replacement, I'll throw out the same name I threw when Jalie Mitchell departed -- Trisha Stafford-Odom (Imani's aunt) . . .

You have to hope the rep of helping assistants become HC grows and we have great, future coaches clamoring to join us.

Was Travis considered the best recruiter (next to Karen)? If so, it seems that
Moooo---Stafford Odom is a very intriguing possibility. Not only has she coached at UCLA, Duke and North Carolina but she has been a key recruiter for those programs.

Like others, I am happy for Travis, but sad for Texas...he will not be easy to replace..he really was instrumental in us winning several games when Aston's game plans were not working...not sure who could fill those shoes, don't think Clarissa would be up for it, IMHO...but Aston will sure pick someone awesome, I am sure!!

Congrats to Travis. He has been a Lifetime Longhorn that has made all of us proud, both on and off the court. He has a beautiful family and will be a big catch for anyone that gets him. If anyone can rise above the stench of SMU's cheating legacy, it will be Travis.

Congratulations to Coach and to his family. Congratulations to Coach Aston for producing another D1 Coach.

And Clarrisa.....no matter what, you were the greatest Lady Longhorn ever.

Can you imagine, Coach Thompson coaching our bigs and Jaime Carey coaching our guards? Talk about my dream. We need that kind of fire and passion on our bench. Jaime Carey come back to UT!!!

    Of the names mentioned I would be surprised if it were not one of them. I think to get Trish Stafford-Odom, she would have to come with the associate HC title. If I were KA, my list would be in this order;

    1. Trish Stafford-Odom
    2. Edwina Brown
    3. Jamie Carey
    4. Clarissa Davis
    5. Tai Dillard
    6. Outside thought - Dean Lockwood (Tenn)

Of one thing I am certain, this is not unexpected. Travis getting to the next level (suitable HC job) has been part of the deal from the beginning and this looked like the year - lots of jobs, Texas program continuing to rise. This being the case, we can be fairly certain Karen has had her own list ready for awhile. Doesn't mean I'm not a little nervous! It would have been great if Travis had wanted to stay forever, a la Christine Dailey at UConn, part of a great duo.

Travis had the most (collegiate) (coaching experience of all our assistant coaches. So, I would think that experience is gonna be a huge factor in hiring his replacement. Washington came from coaching high school athletes at the club level; and, I don't think Thompson had any coaching experience prior to Texas.

Travis really did have a lot of qualifications to be an assistant coach at Texas (and we are never going to find someone to match his specific qualifications):

    - former Texas player
    - former NBA player
    - former Texas assistant under Jody; prior work experience with Coach Aston
    - recruiting familiarity in Texas and Louisiana (he also coached at LSU)
    - experience coaching guards

As for Clarissa Davis, I will always appreciate her as a great, former player. But, (if the rumors are true) the way she turned her back on the University after she was not retained by Coach Goestenkors definitely harmed our program (from a recruiting standpoint); unacceptable in my book.

Could also have been a reflection on how GG turned her back on Jody's legacy and didn't embrace all of the past contributions. Hard to say I blame Clarissa a whole lot
