Buying a desktop to use as our main home system. We'll use for standard office apps, want flexibility to do some multimedia stuff, but don't need super high end. We are not huge gamers. Consumer reports gives the Dell E520 w Intel Core 2 Duo process good marks. Any computer experts out there have thoughts on a better alternative?

Re: processor, any experts have thoughts on which of these I should go with?

    Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E4300 (1.8GHz, 800 FSB) [Included in Price]
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E4400 (2MB L2 Cache,2.0GHz,800FSB) [add $50]
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E6320 (4MB L2 cache,1.86GHz,1066FSB) [add $50]
    Intel® Core™ 2 E6420 Duo Processor(4MB L2 cache,2.13GHZ,1066FSB) [add $100]

    Thanks!

The Core 2 Duo line is the best thing going in CPUs today. The top 3 you listed are all going to work fine. I would get the 6320 because of the faster bus speed and cahce size. . You just have to ask yourself if it is worth the 50 bucks. I don't think you are going to get enough performance boost to justify the $50 extra for the 6420.

The best one for you is probably the cheapest Core 2 Duo. If you are not gaming then you will probably never see the difference. The money is better spend making sure you have 2 gigs of memory.

Wait till after the third week in July. It has been widely reported that Intel is going to do a huge price drop on the Core2Duos. I imagine this will trickle down to the prices on the OEMs as well.

New iMacs are anticipated soon with the latest Santa Rosa chips from Intel. You can run Vista if you need it, but should be able to do everything you need with OS X. Should see discounts and rebates on the current iMacs in the meantime.

Save you some cash and frustration. Buy an HP with an AthlonX2 - alot of people I know (including myself) have them and we couldn't be happier. I know alot of people who own Dells and their quality is not all that great.

I bought a HP6207 or whatever 17" notebook from CompUSA. Love it except for the tons of junk they pre-installed.

Given your posted requirements, I'd look into a Mac. It fits your stated needs perfectly.

Did the anticipated Intel Price drop officially happen yet? I have read on several websites that the Core 2 Duo chips would have the prices reduced on July 22.

    Didn't see anything official yet.

Anyone think that computers at Dell or HP will show the price reductions pretty quickly on their products?
