State champion Katy opened the season tonight at Austin Westlake. 2017 Longhorn QB commit Sam Ehlinger is leading Westlake, with a 14-6 lead currently late in the first half. QB Ehlinger in the photo.
I was busy last night and didn't watch or keep up with any football. This one seemed like a great one.
I drew some comparisons to Elway a few months back and got hammered on this board. But I do agree, there are some similarities, and not only on the field. The look. The demeanor. But for anyone who wants to say that I am attempting to anoint Ehlinger, please don't go there. It's just an innocent observation. Actually I never liked Elway. Too cocky for my taste. But he was a great QB.
I was at the game last night--my first in-person view of Ehlinger. He's darn good, that's for sure. Takes a lot of chances, but it seems to work out. Last year, even though he played loose like that, he just did not throw interceptions. He's bigger than Buechele, for example, so that's good. As long as we are using Pro Hall of Famers for our examples, I think he reminds me more of Aaron Rodgers than Elway. He has that same kind of off-balance passing style that makes it hard for the defense to know when the ball may come out, and similar running and escapability-with-vision ability. Elway could plant his feet and throw harder and straighter than just about anyone. Not sure Ehlinger has that much arm, but I hope so.
