Well maybe the drafting of Prescott may pay off sooner than yall think............if a rookie can succeed in the NFL this is one of the best scenarios for that to happen.......top flight OLine, very good run game and 88, 82 and some other pretty damn good receivers.

Bad news for Tony. IMO, he should read the tea leaves here and retire from the NFL. He is old by NFL standards, but he still has many years of life ahead of him. He is prone to injury and, at his age and with his track record, he will recover very slowly. Why risk a further injury which might incapacitate him for the rest of his life? Prince Fielder was smart enough to realize that (with some prodding from his medical advisors) and retired while he still has his mobility and capabilities to enjoy life - Tony should do likewise.

Seems like the last two seasons, injuries put him on the sidelines. Now this one he'll miss about 8 games, maybe more.

What HHD said. I've been a Romo apologist for years, but even I can see that there's no scenario in which he ever competes as a 16-game starter in the NFL ever again. He caught lightning in a bottle in the 2014 Murray season, played hurt, and got the first Cowboys playoff victory in 5 years, but that's going to be his high-water mark.

He's tough, funny, and an overall decent guy. He needs to retire to allow the Cowboys to spread out his remaining paychecks and afford them the opportunity to sign a veteran who can help Dak along.

That will be tricky with the cap hit. The know it all's were already saying the Cowboys could not afford to get rid of him until after the 2017 season.

It's very true. Romo is on the team through 2017 unless he chooses to retire.

$19.6 mil cap hit if cut prior to 2017 season is too steep even if spreading it out between two years as a June 1 cut. Over $10 mil would hit cap in 2017.

If he were cut on June 1, 2018 they could then spread out $8.6 mil...$5.7 mil in 2018 and $3.2 mil in 2019.

I can't see Romo retiring before 2017 season even if he goes down again later in 2016 with something similar to the injuries he's had.

Leaving many, many millions on the table is not something he and the wife are likely to do, IMHO.

Brad, agree but one sentence is a small correction:

I can't see Romo retiring before 2017 season even when he goes down again later in 2016 with something similar to the injuries he's had.

Exactly, Viper - it's not if, it's when. If Tony comes back and tries to play again, he will get hit and hurt - and next time he might not walk away from it. If the Cows have to keep him to avoid the huge hit on the cap, maybe when he returns, he can be the holder for field goals and extra points - there should be a lesser chance of further injury that way.

Time for Romo to retire. His body is shot.

Btw, I wasn't certain but now can clarify, if Romo retired before 2017 season, Boys are still on the hook for $19.6 mil cap hit of signing and restructure bonuses, etc.

Now there is another consideration here...

If cut after after this season or Tony retires, Dallas gets stuck with $19.6 mil in dead money, yet they also save on not paying $14 mil in 2017 base salary.

So the real damage to the 2017 cap would be a $5.6 mil deficit. Not ideal, but still manageable. Especially when starting a QB who costs $636k in 2017.

In 2017 if they went with Dak (636k), Moore (800k), Showers (540k), plus Romo's $5.6 mil deficit...the position would still cost the cap a ton less than the $22+ mil it's costing in 2016.
