I hadn't heard of this term until it was mentioned by HRC in her speech yesterday. Here is the Wikipedia site with a definition of the alt-right. Was anyone else familiar with this term or "movement"? I have to say, anything that has it's roots in 4Chan should be treated with skepticism.

Is it just a coincidence that internet memes feature so prominently in alt-right circles and in posts here? I'm not saying anyone here is anti-semetic or into white supremacism but many of the other characterizations have similarities to postings here.

Alt-right is the alternative to Hillary supporters, which are known as "- -ick weeds".

I've been familiar with the Alt-Right for a few years. They're not full blown white nationalists, but they walk on the line. I also don't see much traditional conservatism. It's basically all cultural issues advocated with obnoxiousness and smack talk - not much of an intellectual case.

Probably the most famous alt-Right figure is Milo Yiannopoulos, a.k.a., the "Dangerous ******" (his term). It's a little weird knowing that this big cultural conservative is queer as a three dollar bill and defiantly so.

And I've been told Milo dates black men, but how is that racist according to Hillary?

I do not think there are all that many people in "alt-right". It's probably less than 10,000 (this is a very generous estimate) yahoos with a computer. Hillary decided to go with a Trump boogeyman tactic showing, yet again, that she has no business being president either.

I think 10K yahoos with computers is enough to move Breitbart's needle.

The alt-right are a young, educated and technology proficient brand of new conservatives. They have no leader. And it's pretty ridiculous to suggest they do. Hillary's conspiracy theory that Putin is somehow in control of the alt-right drew the biggest LOLs from her speech.

The name Milo Yiannopoulos was mentioned above. He could be considered one of the movement's leaders except that he has repeatedly said he is not alt-right.

If you remember those 4 headlines from Breitbart that Hillary read during her speech? All of them were the names of articles written by Milo. Besides being Brit, he is also gay and makes no secret of his preference for sex with black males. Which puts him in a unique position free from the usual insults and stereotypes lefties love to throw at conservatives.

Milo is bright, funny, irreverent and has a quick wit. His main target seems to be feminists ("feminism is cancer" is his) but he also goes after SJWs alot. He has single-handedly exposed many examples of feminist lying and using fake stats, has caused them to issue retractions, and IIRC caused some to lose jobs. This goes all the way back to Gamergate (which I refuse to try and explain).

He was recently banned for life by Twitter over the Leslie Jones/new Ghostbusters movie. Twitter never explained this lifetime ban. But it was not for anything Milo wrote himself but rather what other Twitter users did in response to Milo's work (they bombarded Jones with insults). Twitter held him responsible for their behavior.

Anyway, here is an article by Milo himself attempting to explain the alt-right. It should give you all the info you want if you can bring yourself to read a Breitbart housed article. http://www.breitbart.com/tech/2016/03/29/an-establishment-conservatives-guide-to-the-alt-right/

And here is some video so you can see Milo for yourself

If there is an alt-right, there has to be an alt-left. I guess most of Obama's mentors belong in this group...

Where the Tea Party was generally made up of a older, nicer people, who were perhaps a bit rural and more trusting -- for which they got abused, conned and taken advantage of.

But the alt-right is sophisticated, suspicious, and combative.

I appreciate the insight, Joe Fan. No time for a discussion right now but it over the weekend I found that article and reaction articles in National Review, Vanity Fair, USA Today and others. It seems there is quite a debate raging in conservative circles. Milo and his ilk appear to savor being "shock political pundits" similar to shock jocks on the radio billing themselves as thought leaders with new ideas. The old guard (National Review) takes issue with it. From what I can see, the only difference may be the tactics, not the ideas. I'll add more later in the week.

I'm watching this Milo guy live right now on youtube live stream in LSU. "Fat Shaming Works" is the thesis of his talk, but he's also taking general questions right now. The guy came out in drag.

I have to tell you...I'm impressed by the guy - really impressed. His theatrics, which I think are hilarious, are definitely not for everyone, but the message about freedom, self-reliance, enterprise, being a good neighbor, and patriotic are timeless and for every American.

He raked feminists, like Sally Kohn and Lena Dunham, over the coals and tangentially when talking about "body positivity" said if BLM really cares about saving black lives should focus on attacking obesity in their community, but he didn't attack multiculturalism nor (other than saying the United States is a great country founded and based on good people with good principles) promote some kind of crazy nationalism.

Deez, here's another Alt-Right person that you may want to check out...Lauren Southern.

I posted this in another thread but I'll post it here now. Here is my interpretation of the alt-right after studying it for the last few months.

What is the alt-right in my own words? An online community of white nationalists who believe our European cultural heritage is superior to all others. This breeds a contempt for multi-culturalism, immigration and feminism. Race is at the center of this extreme brand of conservatism.

Given it's online roots, the alt-right is technology savvy, not particularly religious and has a vehement disdain for political correctness. Like anarchists, it revels in inciting animosity from the bearers of the 3 previously mentioned policies. I'm not sure it's truly anti-semetic but it enjoys the ethos of being a flamethrower and nobody is easier to troll than the Jewish community and they don't care what you or I think or say.

Though Brietbart has claimed to be a home for the alt-right, their real home is in 4chan, Twitter, Reddit and other darker places of the internet. We see it in the form of clever memes like those incessantly posted by Joe Fan. One could make the argument that they are attention whores with their fake religion (Church of Kek) who is an actual Egyptian deity: God of Chaos. They call regular conservatives "cukservatives" denoting them as cowards. In fact, you'll notice the alt-right is very quick to throw out slanderous names of their opponents while claiming some sort of intellectual superiority. Overcompensation I guess.

What is the ultimate goal of the alt-right? To burn it all down. The establishment, political correctness, major parties, current political system, etc. are all targets. What do they want to replace it with? That's not defined but you can be sure that it would be based on white nationalism.

I think the alt-right is the internet equivalent of anarchists. They don't have an end in mind but hate the "now" and love the reaction to the fires they start. Here comes the hard part, now their "leaders" are actually in charge. What to do now? It's easy to take potshots at the establishment when you are on the outside but now they are the establishment. Good luck.

Yep, that's pretty much the going Lib narrative on what they are.

From what I've gathered there are many conflicting accounts of their actions and motives. I think it's because the group differs so much even within itself.

From the mouths of a few well known figures in the group that I've heard talk, they post offensive and purposely agitating things specifically to torment the other side.

It def didn't come across as the ones I heard believed in and supported what they post, but instead are trolling with hardcore things they know will make Libs lose it.

That being said, I'm not discounting there are some very bad eggs in there as well.

SH, good take. I wonder if the majority of people who started following "alt-right" media and personalities over the summer were like the BLMers we hear about...people who want justice and fairness from law enforcement, but have no idea of the sepratist hate philosphy in their official manifesto.

It's not just liberals but conservatives too. They loathe the military hawks like John McCain just as much as the liberals.

Here is a relatively recent article from a self-professed conservative on the alt-right.

Good point. I'd wager a fair amount, some even on this board.

Maybe or maybe not. I don't know either.

What I do know is that while I disagree with people supporting BLM, the vast majority of them don't believe in "disrupting Western-prescribed nuclear family structures" as stated in their official guiding principles linked above. Likewise, whether we like the Alt-Right or not, the vast majority of folks who follow it aren't white-supremacists.

I don't believe that everyone that supported Trump or now ascribes to be part of the alt-right is a white supremacist. Obviously, I am concerned by Bannon as he's been a cheerleader for the alt-right. Whether he actually supports their message doesn't matter but he's used their energy and built a media company with an aversion to disowning the white supremacist movement. So, we may not know what he thinks but I don't trust him with my country based on what we do know.
