must have a pretty high pain threshold to tear a meniscus in each knee and expect to play next Friday: From the AAS article:
Um, no. He injured cartilage in both knees, not ligaments. Still not good, but damn, at least get the basic language right.
yeah, same general area but different animals. As long as a piece doesn't tear off and cause the knee to lock up, his ability to play will depend on how much he feels and how high his pain threshold is.
Ok you docs - two knee surgeries the last week in December (the championship game is the weekend before Christmas so this would be worse case), when can he play again?
When I had arthroscopic surgery on my knee to repair a meniscus tear I was ambulatory in 2 days and fully mobile in less than 6 weeks. Now my knees are not subject to the stresses applied by collegiate athletes, but a simple meniscus repair is a fairly minor procedure with a short recovery time.
That would mean, worse case he would not be ready for Spring 2017 as an EE, but should be ready for fall 2017.
Report of surgery today: http://www.burntorangenation.com/20...ry-texas-longhorns-recruiting-austin-westlake
@ChipBrownHD is being very optimistic, per the quote from the U of Washington's Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine website in the article. Whichever it is, a full recovery will allow him to participate in spring ball.
Meniscus tears are not generic, like taking out an appendix. Cartilage can't just be "fixed" like a torn ACL; generally what is torn or gone is gone for good. So, how much tear? How deep/wide etc.? Where located? Yes, usually, the things said on this thread are about right. I had meniscus repair a couple of years ago. Just pointing out that, with us not knowing what his particular MRI and surgery revealed, we can't just assume it is "typical" to what is on some website or our personal experience.
When I had my meniscus cleaned up (as noted, "repair" is not correct, they remove the torn part) I was walking on it the next day, but I had some pain for a couple of months afterwards. Of course, I was not 17 at the time, more like 47.
I've had two medial meniscus surgeries within 9 months of each other, and it still hasn't healed right. The post surgery pain is gone, but the inflammation is still unbearable from time to time. I can almost forget about running again, even though I have resumed weight lifting. Was heavily considering going to a doctor to see what other options are available besides surgery. BTW, I'm 37.
dion, what happened to Katy last night? I hope the game was better than the highlights on Fox this morning.
