The common myth is that Bevo is drugged, but this is simply not true...

My friends in silver spurs all said he was completely drugged out back in the day.

That's probably true but unfortunately they are still going to be small for this years National Championship when we take the field.:bevo::yippee::hookem2:

So, we are opining about POTENTIAL? Correct? (even the natty talk)
Not sure if a few of you have been around cattle.

That being said, I also want a badass Bevo at the 2018 National Championship game.

Maybe you do not believe the Bakers or the Silver Spurs. They insist he is not drugged

Not sure when you attended Texas. However, I was very close to the handlers during my time there and many other Spurs, Bevo 14 wasn't drugged, he didn't need to be. An excellent show steer well handled doesn't need to be especially the Longhorn breed. Although, I do not doubt some of the previous Bevo steers were indeed drugged. Some of those were pretty rowdy.

I believe the Silver Spurs I personally know that were handlers and said he was drugged. I am sure they also officially say they "do not haze" newcomers anymore. Also, Bevo is a cow. I do not know what the big deal is if he is drugged. It it makes him more docile, great.

I wasn't bothered by the small horns. They will grow. As to the comment about a 7 foot pacifist leprechaun, would it shrink over time? If so, then the analogy would apply.

I don't really get the pushback here. When Baylor gets a new bear mascot, do they go find a full grown bear? Or a bear cub? How about LSU with Mike? UGA just about always starts as a pup too, I believe. (Could be wrong on that one.)

Not sure what other schools do about their new mascots. I don't remember ever having a new Bevo without the horns. So this would seem to be a change in new mascot protocol for us, not something we have done before. Under this protocol, we get a young one and hope it works out. I would place my money on the breeder if I had to bet, but nothing is certain.
    Show me the horns.

Also, I was relieved this was not a leprechaun steer.

XV is just a little over one year old. My father and uncle used to raise longhorns, and he's bigger than any of the over one year old bulls we had. Those horns and XV will get a lot bigger. Give him a little time.

    HTown ...

Bevo is a steer ... A Bovine. With all due respect to your acquaintances, "Bevo" hasn't been drugged since Sunrise Ranch, the Bakers, started providing the mascot --- they've been raised in the stockshow circuit. Aggressive animals don't last in the circuit.

Most of those handlers, while no doubt good folks, are NOT experienced with cattle/livestock/Longhorns. The typical member likes to string tales of greatness. I was once 20 years old and matriculating at The University and even in AFROTC ... It happens.

Years ago, It was a pipe dream for us at Flying V to enter the competition for XV ... Though sadly XV was needed sooner than we thought. Our program is just beginning to enter the strata. Our two Texas Longhorn exhibitor sons --- 16 years combined experience halter breaking, training, fitting and exhibiting Texas Longhorns. They've won Champion Showman at the Breeder's Association (TLBAA) "World Show" and other shows.

I don't claim to know everything about Texas Longhorns, but I know more than most. I am well acquainted/friended with those who are experts on the majestic animal --- including my Pre-Vet son and younger son who is showing his Longhorns in Abilene this very day.

It's a great honor to provide the University's mascot, but as has been demonstrated in this thread, few have so much as a clue what it takes to safely have a good mascot on the sidelines ... Or other venues for that matter.

Congratulations to the Bakers ... And MANY THANKS!!!!

Sunrise Spur is an excellent choice and is an excellent mascot. As has been mentioned also in this thread, will mature with this Charlie Strong team.

Some folks just need something about which to gripe.

XV is a perfect mascot for our program at the moment, IMHO. Young, feisty, and growing daily into a good looking, powerful beast. :bevo:

Does anyone know the reason the petition to have Bevo XV at Cal got rejected by their administration?
