    Defensive coordinator in waiting?

He isn't going to last long at South Carolina the way things are going right now.

    :fiestanana:

    Let's get the party started!

I thought the same thing. He's not much of a head coach but a damn good DC. Don't know if we can wait that long though. We need help NOW!!

    ^^^^ This.

Muschamp isn't the answer, but waiting until next season isn't the answer either.

One of the best we've ever had. I'd love to have him back. Hell, I'd take Gary arnell over what we have now.

I suspect CS may make some D changes during the bye week but he will keep Bedford in place. If the D turns out to be an Achilles heel this season, Bedford will be sacrificed at the end of the season. However, that may not be enough to keep Charley's job, especially if the season ends 5-7, 6-6 or possibly even 7-5.

I don't think any DC would jump to come to Austin in midseason. After the bowls and playoffs yeah. But it depends on who the target is. To get someone at this exact moment, they would basically not be coaching this season.

Frustrating that we will be going into year 4 and Charlie still doesn't have his staff. And we all sorta knew it too.(even those of us who really like Charlie weren't thrilled about his coordinators. )

I like Charlie and want him to get it done. But if he can't he only has himself to blame

Bringing his DC, a Texas alum, made perfect sense. This is a reasonable time-line to decide Bedford can or can't do it.

Stoops has changed over multiple coordinators on both sides of the ball. It's not a condemnation. It's what the head guy does.

I believe most of Stoops' coordinators went on to better jobs, that is why they had to be replaced, not because they got pushed out.

Muschamp is a fantastic defensive coordinator, but everyone seems to forgot he caused a lot of internal strife on the Mack Brown staff and demanded assistants get fired days before hightailing it to Florida. Remember, Muschamp had Akina fired days before leaving to Florida. I still think Muschamp's internal strife was a huge factor in derailing the program after 2009, one from which we have not yet recovered. Muschamp's head coaching record at Florida demonstrates this as well. As great as he was as a defensive mind, I do not think he is worth the long term trouble he caused.

You don't anoint someone like Muschamp to be something like "Head coach in Waiting" without a timeline.
And so I am sure Mack gave him one but when he didn't stick to the timeline, what else could he expect but for Muschamp bolt.

Let's quit playing "fantasy land" and talk reality.

    1) The Defensive Coordinator at Tarleton State isn't likely to jump ship in mid season much less anyone better.

    2) Strong had trouble filling the jobs when he was hired, thus we got stuck with rejects, or at least less than we are used to seeing.

    3) Whether Strong is on solid ground or not, the perception in the coaching circles is that anyone accepting the job may only be in Austin for one season.

We need help IMMEDIATELY and certainly before Bedford turns snowflake into a Hype$sman front runner. That means a mystery consultant. Maybe on another thread, we should list our favorites with the chance that they would take the job.

Go get Greg Robinson....get him for a million....I'd come out of retirement for $500,000....I'd do a better job than Bedford...Heck hire me !!!!! LOL

That is really not the issue. The issue is Muschamp demanded coaches like Akina be fired when he knew he was leaving anyway and the fact Muschamp likely damages the cohesion of a coaching staff. That what why I brought up Florida. Even when he was the actual head coach, there were problems.

By the time Muschamp left I was glad to see him go.
    Leave him where he is.

This is one area Bedford has taken care of business.

Muschamp is not the answer IMHO. He left a bad taste in many mouths and I suspect he would not want to come back under any conditions anyway.

Agree with Sabre that CS is not going to lure a good DC prospect to Austin for a 9 or 10 game gig especially with a cloud hanging over the long term viability of the CS program.

I suspect the fix for this D is beyond the skills of CS. As Sabre suggested, he needs help right NOW. A Tomey or Robinson type consultant to come in make some immediate changes or this season will continue to limp along with Bedford's poor man's defense.

If CS doesn't get some help quick or make some meaningful changes on D, IMO the odds increase he finishes with a 6-6 type record while begging the cigar chompers for more time.

Just to clarify what going 7-5 means now...

5-4 rest of reg season and in conference play

Same conf record as the first season without all the new added talent

Losing 4 or more conf games in all 3 seasons

Never winning more than 5 conf games in any season (in a conf with 5 ready-made wins for a competent program...ISU, KU, KSU, TTU, WVU).

    18-19 (losing) overall record

Of course 7-5 and a nice bowl win to end up 8-5 would make a huge difference.

I'm not ready to bail on the season by any means. I was tempered in praising after ND (mostly because I was internally basking in the glory and didn't want to alter the feeling).

Since I was rather tame here after ND, I had no right to publicly unload after Cal.

However, 5-4 the rest of the way is not gonna cut it. I believe we will exceed that and get some things worked out in a softer Big 12.

I figured we'd be 2-1 now, just in a different way. I also believed we'd be 2-3 after OU and then go on a run. I still see that coming.

8-5 was always the mark needed to earn $5 mil paycheck going forward and continue to be paid like the other Top 10 money-makers who knock out 8+ wins each year.

Nothing has changed with that after a surprising win and a lackluster loss. Let's just keep going with the flow and let Strong decide his fate on the field.

If we don't adjust well, drop 4 more reg season games, and then lose the bowl game in his 3rd season...good riddance.

I'm still not predicting us to finish under 8-5, so until proven otherwise or something massively embarrassing occurs on the field...gonna stay course and see what happens.

Duke is beating Notre Dame 21-14 right now, so I am starting to get more and more concerned about how good this team really is.
