FWHORN, I agree - this bottle of magic comeback potion has lasted a looooong time. Hope there is enough to get through the World Series. Kudos to the bullpen - Cole was not sharp (again - he has to get this sorted out quickly!) and the bullpen shut Oakland down so the bats could find a way to catch up. The Astro W over Seattle helped, cutting two off the magic number. The Rangers could wrap up the West during this homestand. Mrs. HHD and I are going Tuesday - it would be very nice to celebrate wrapping up the West that evening. The Angels have really gone down the tubes, and their pitching totally sucks, so the Rangers should have a chance to crank up the offense.

^Not sure. My investment advisor has rented a suite and is hosting us and some other clients. I'll probably meet him at the gate and let him escort us to whichever suite we will be using. The suites are a very nice way to watch the game - hope we get a better game than the Rangers played tonight.

Rangers get ripped tonight as Darvish gets shelled. Mrs. FWHORN and I will be there Wednesday night so it seems Hornfans will have the Angels series mostly covered. Cleveland is back to within 1 in the best record race. Rubber match tomorrow with the A's and Colby on the mound.:texasflag:

The rangers telecast has these reversed. Seattle is ahead of Houston in the standings (well now they're tied) so I'm pretty certain the magic number is now 3 for both teams after tonights outcomes. Houston's # was 4 and seattle's was 5 according to the standings.....

Rangers open series with Angels with 3-2 win. Martin Perez has his third straight good outing and wouldnt that be a plus to have good Martin for the playoffs. Meanwhile ho hum another walkoff ninth inning one run win because that is just what the Rangers do and because somewhere karma is absolutely trolling all the metrics and science guys with this years Rangers team.:texasflag:

Guess the bottle of magic comeback potion still had enough for one more last night. Hope there's still enough for the rest of the season and the playoffs and World Series.

Mrs. HHD and I are going tonight - hope my presence doesn't jinx them.

Well after one of griffin's best outings of the year, he comes out and throws perhaps his worst... 4 walks, 3 hits, and a hit by pitch in 1 2/3 innings. Walked the last 2 runs in on 8 pitches. Martinez coming in for some long relief. Let's see if we can work our way back in this game as it's still early.

Just got back from The Ballpark. Our investment advisory firm rented the Jack Daniels Bullpen suite tonight - at the far end of the old Diamond Club, right behind the visitor's bullpen, great view of the game. Griffin stunk - no other way to put it. Kudos to the bullpen - 7.1 innings of one-run ball. And to Mazara for a monster two-run homer over the Texas bullpen.

Listened to the post-game wrap-up on the drive home - apparently Toronto is putting a first-class whipping on Seattle, so the magic number could be down to one. Unfortunately Cleveland won, so no ground gained (or lost) in the battle for home-field advantage. Supposed to be Holland and Weaver tomorrow. Another W would wrap it up nicely.

Well oakland really knows how to blow games vs houston this year. Seems like the last 4 or 5 games in that series, houston has rallied late to win. We'll need a win AND houston loss to officially clinch tomorrow at home.... thanks a lot oakland. :/

Houston has oaklands number like the rangers have theirs. Oakland can't beat them to save their lives. Every game vs these 2 start the exact same.... Oakland jumps to an early 1-0 or 2-0 lead with chances to score more but cant.... then houston comes back. At least the last 4 or 5 games. It's actually quite annoying. I wish oakland would put some of their beatings they use on the rangers towards the astros. I guss oakland really wants the rangers to celebrate on their homefield. :/ 4-1 houston in the 6th as of now.

So Mrs. FWHORN and I got out to Ballpark last night to see Derek Holland prove once again that he is not remotely a fourth starter for the playoffs as he give up 5 runs in five innings including a 3 run shot by Trout. My guess is Perez is your fourth starter. Rangers rally to make it close but never can get over the hump. Cleveland wins to tie the Rangers for best record and Boston is now just one back in that race. The Rangers could fall to being a road team in the divisional round if they dont watch out. the reason for this late season slide is that the Rangers starting rotation ERA for September is over 5 and that is not a recipe for having success in the next few weeks. Day off today then last road sries of year starting tomorrow in Oakland. Rangers are 8-8 in last 16 and probably need to go 6-3 or better over these last nine to have home field.:texasflag:

Rangers clinch no worse than a tie for AL West with Houston's loss. They sit 1/2 game up on Cleveland and 1 game up on Red Sox for best record in AL so important last nine games here.:texasflag:

^Indeed he did. Let's hope Yu can find the same mojo - and quickly. The Rangers go as far in the playoffs as Cole and Yu can take them.

Well, I got my wish - Yu looked terrific in his seven innings this afternoon. Based on the last two games, looks like Cole and Yu have it figured out. Let's see how Colby looks tomorrow.

Changing the subject slightly - according to a report I read this week, the Rangers have a buyout provision for Holland for next year. If they keep him, he makes $11M; they can buy out his last year for $1.5M and let him become a free agent. I'm betting they try to trade him during the winter for any worthwhile prospect; if there are no takers, they buy him out and use the money to sign Desmond long-term. Shame - Holland certainly showed flashes of brilliance along the way, but never could be (a) healthy (b) consistent (c) all of the above.

You are probably right about Holland HHD. However they would better serve him by just cutting him loose at the end of the season.

Rangers with second straight shutout today and with Cleveland losing they move game and a half up on the Tribe for best record, Boston won its tenth straight and stays game behind in same race for best record. Rangers have tie-braker with both clubs so a tie in race is as good as win. Last road game of regular season tomorrow as Rangers try to get sweep in Oakland.

I think Holland is gone after this year as Rangers try to trade or if needed buy him out and try to trade some combo of Gallo/Profar and some other prospects to get Sale or another front line pitcher.:texasflag:

A package of Holland/Gallo/Profar might get less than just Profar. Gallo has looked clueless in each of his stints with the Rangers, and everyone knows the book on Holland.

There will be other moves (including hopefully signing Desmond) so let's see. Needs are at least one SP (two would be better); a bat (or two if Desmond isn't signed); some movement to find Beltre's successor; and a revamped bullpen.

Viper, I like your line of thinking. There is no place for Profar right now as an everyday player with the Rangers, and some other team will have a place for him as a starter. I'm not quite ready to give up on Gallo (close) just yet - there is too much potential there, but maybe he just needs a change of scenery/coaching. They can probably wait one more year to concentrate on the 3B of the future, but another starting pitcher is a must. Including Holland in a trade with Profar sounds like a good idea, especially if it nets a good pitching prospect in the deal. I get the impression from the local media that Desmond really would like to stay here, and a decent long-term deal would lock him up - he has certainly been a bargain this season.

Colby Lewis blows up in the second giving up 7 runs and although bullpen then throws 6 2/3 scoreless the Rangers mount no real offense to lose 7-1. The Rangers road record this season was 42-39 a very respectable road record. Rangers are tied with Boston for best record and 1 and 1/2 games up on Cleveland with last six at home this week. :texasflag:
