The previous dismissals were not his recruits and not a reflection of Charlie. This is a Charlie recruit so a little softer approach will probably be taken. Just my opinion.
Joe Fan is just trolling on the subject of Uber and Lyft. and re that third value of no drugs, alcohol is legal but you can get in trouble when you abuse it, kinda like Perkins did that night. Have to wonder how they will apply that third value or if Coach Strong is only talking about illegal drugs there.
We could pull an aggy discipline move....like what they did with Johnny Trainwreck, and suspend Perkins for the 1st half of the game against Okie State.
According to the story at least, he was asleep and blocking the cars in the drive-thru behind him. They knocked on the window and said to move out of the way and he just drifted forward until he bumped into something and then fell back asleep again, at which point they opened the door and turned off the car, and begin checking for drugs/alcohol.
Seems like I remember him suspending players with no specific timeframe involved. The players would have to make sufficient "progress" in order to be reinstated.
I think the early suspensions were for failed drug tests. (marijuana) Seems Charlie would suspend 30 days and complete treatment program. Those that continued to fail drug test were let go. I could see a 30 day suspension with some form of treatment.
This guy was Mack's recruit, not Charlie's....but Charlie said players had bought in....Not this guy.
Even though it has been established that Perkins was a Mark recruit, that should make zero difference. I cannot imagine any coach going easier on "his" recruits vs. those from a previous staff. Such an individual would not be worthy of the job in my judgment.
Since he was asleep/drunk in a stopped car, if he had not tried to move the car all they could have gotten him for was Public Intoxication - bad, but not as bad as a DWI.
"Sec. 49.04. DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED. (a) A person commits an offense if the person is intoxicated while operating a motor vehicle in a public place." The statue does not define "operating". Operating does not necessarily have to mean "driving" or "moving". I am not familiar with Texas case law defining "operating" so any members of the Texas Bar are welcome to chime in.
I think it is still illegal to smoke weed in Texas whether you are a regular student or an athlete. That might be the point of the "no drugs" core value.
While I do not recommend it or condone it, I must admit that while I was an undergraduate student and/or while I was enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin in graduate school, I drank alcohol illegally when under the age of 21, I illegally operated a vehicle while inebriated (and luckily never had an accident or got caught) and I illegally smoked marijuana. Good luck to Kent Perkins. I hope you successfully work your way through this particular jam and I hope you are able to start again for the Longhorn football team before the end of the season.
