I have watched every team in our conference play except TTech.
We can beat every one of them.
I am stating now that we win the remainder of our schedule.
    Unless we suffer major injuries.

Or I am just creating a thread for the Charlie bashers to roost in.
We'll see which way it goes. :) :hookem: :bevo:

I hope you’re right. I like the Kool-aid too but “we can beat Cal” was also a popular view.

Maybe the defensive woes will be addressed and this team surprises us.

I previously posted that Strong had all the stars aligned in his favor. There is not a legit Top 5 (probably Top 10) team in the conference. Strong should have been able to run the table. This week, we go to the Dust Bowl and face the best QB we will face all year. The guy makes great throws, that you usually see only on Sunday, and then still not in every game. While we have a break in having the worst OU, oSu, TCU, Tech, Baylor, WVU teams in recent memory, this coaching staff has a really good opportunity to lose any or all those games, while the talent pool suggests Texas could and should win all. But then we should have beaten Berzerkley, and no team that doesn't know where to line up or its assignments is going to win more than they lose unless they have a cupcake schedule. Strong has as close to a cupcake schedule as he will ever see in Austin.

The secondary has to play much better than they did against Cal and ND. The O is playing well enough and is scoring 44 points per game. So, if we can score almost every drive we have the ball, maybe. I would love it if we do. But my reality check says, no. I think 7-8 wins is the best we see this year. We'll know a lot more after the OSU and OU games.

Well, I figure I come off looking like a sage, or everyone has a laugh at my expense.
    The D will get better.
The road games scare me most.
The juggernaut is about to ensue.

People will be too busy burning effigies and working up short lists for the next staff to notice if you're wrong, so you're pretty safe :smile1:

I hope so! We play the easiest schedule Texas will ever see! Oklahoma State, even though they lost to Central Michigan, is a better team than we have played so far. OSU's bad defense will still be the best defense we have played so far. A win would end Coach Strong's 5 game out of state losing streak. I think this weekend will tell us how the rest of the season is going to go.

M_LFZ - your more optimistic than I am, today. I hope your right.

    Yup.

We'll see Sat. if Charlie's "tweaked" defense worked or will make a difference the rest of the season.

I'm not a Charlie basher but I just don't see how this defense can suddenly be fixed. It seems it will be down to the last spent shell in every game....

True. It is going to be a long uglllyyyyyy season if we lose this one.

Every game is going to be live or die from here, but that's the bed CS has made and he has to lay in it.

We should get a look at whether Charlie's attention can make a difference to this defense. I had visions of them spending the last 2 weeks running hundreds of complex passing routes at the back 7. I hope that's what happened.

It can't. It CAN improve, but not by some overnight miracle. Unless the guys were just goofing off and needed a good slap and kick in the butt to wake them up.

You may be right about osu. Although I would argue that ND's shi--- defense is as good or better than osu's shi--- defense.

What really matters is if CS can figure out how to defense modern spread offenses. He has not, and certainly VB has not, given us any reason whatsoever to believe he can.

Until this defense can show some consistency then we are f----d.

I love Charlie, but the credit has run out. He has got to pay up, so to speak, on the field with this defense. Otherwise, we will lose more games than we win this year.

Cary, I think we agree on the rest, but you know me and I like to going into detail or arguing about the minutiea.

    Notre Dame (1-3)
Total Offense Rank: 46th Scoring Offense Rank: 43rd
Total Defense Rank: 103rd Scoring Defense Rank: 101st
    Notre Dame 47 @ Texas 50 2OT
    Notre Dame 39 Nevada 10
Notre Dame 28 Michigan State 36
    Notre Dame 35 Duke 38

    Oklahoma State (2-2)
Total Offense Rank: 41st Scoring Offense Rank: 37th
Total Defense Rank: 87th Scoring Defense Rank: 72nd
Oklahoma State 61 Southeastern Louisiana 7
Oklahoma State 27 Central Michigan 30
    Oklahoma State 45 Pittsburgh 38
    Oklahoma State 24 @ Baylor 35

Now truth be told, both the Notre Dame and Okie State defenses are somewhere between bad and terrible. We are not halfway through the season, so notre dame's defense may pass okie state, but right now Notre Dame's is statistically worse. Plus Duke had previously only scored 14 and 13 points on wake forest and northwestern. Additionally, Michigan State only scored 6 on Wisconsin and 28 on Furman! While I do believe our offense has improved and is good, we have faced defenses outside of the top 100 in Notre Dame, Cal and Utep. Okie State also got to see our offense last week with Baylor so they will have another week of preparing for something similar. I think this will be our biggest defensive challenge to our offense to date (and we wont have perkins). That said, we should and probably will still score. Will we score enough? I have no idea.

Come on, did you see what happened to Notre Dame since the Horns beat them? What does that say about that team that the Horns barely beat at home? Do you really have the confidence that Charlie is going to make the right move with the game on the line? Did he really think his defense could make a stand against Cali? Could he ever let go of his good buddy Bedford if the D gets lit up for 50 again? Do we witness another victory over a "better" team (I thought "We are Texas") and give Charlie another "victory ride" showing the love fest between him and his players, only to have them lay a goose egg on the road the next week? Please tell me that we are done with moral victories. Please!

I think the body surf should be put to rest until we win the B12 conference. At the end of that game, I'd be ok with the Body Surf.

The way I see it is our defense has to improve but does not have to become "outstanding".
Although I hope "outstanding" is where we end up.
At the presser Strong said he counted 10 or 11 plays where the D just screwed the pooch against Cal. (yea, WTF)
So let's try not to have any more than 4 or 5 brain farts.
And if the O still scores in high 30s or more then I think we win.
(As long as each brain fart doesn't result in a score)

And as another poster said, OSU just played Baylor so they just played our offensive scheme.
The O will have to come out with more than 4 plays to be called.
We can win this road trip to the desolate wasteland north of the Red River.

    As BiS would say. Focusness!

Agree as long as the O is scoring in the 40's, the D only needs to be good. My concern is while Texas scored in the 40's against Cal, they should have score in the 60's - Cal's D is that bad. Boo getting hurt is the excuse, and it did throw everything out of sync. However what happened when Boo left is the big concern - Swoops once again showed he is not an every down QB as he presents ZERO passing threat (2 plus years of trying).

    DOOMED !!!!! DOOMED, I say !!!!!!!
LOL...... I give up on predicting how any team will play. Just look at some of the scores across the country over the first few weeks of the season. Odds makers have to be scratching their heads every day.

Does Merrick suck ? Does our staff suck ? How do you put in a spread offense with a skinny Freshman ( not really skinny, but small ) as your ONLY QB who can run the system ????? Who does that ????

It's standard operating procedure from a coaching from behind, reactive head coach.

Stuck with Watson to redesign the 2015 offense after he proved grossly inept, and then dismissed his OC duties early in season when he flopped.

Trusted Bedford to fix the 2016 defense after the worst performance in UT history and he's now on the brink of removing his coordinator duties early in season.

Continued to naively believe TS is a viable pocket QB despite overwhelming evidence saying otherwise.

Fostered the sunshine narrative of solid improvement and allowed back-to-back QB controversies depriving many first-team reps from the eventual starter.

For a second straight season CS is forced to accept the reality TS has no business being a pocket QB and now he's forced to adjust in season.

I haven't given up on a good season as long as Shane stays upright. The defense should improve enough to keep us competitive, possibly.

But it's clear CS's tenure has been marred with reactive, amateur coaching blunders unforeseen and unaddressed until the season was already underway.

What were our other options? Go with the 18 Wheeler as our bread and butter?
Heard, FWIW, also ran the spread in HS. Before the switch to WR he was considered a viable option to Boo, and he might still make see some time there.

I do agree with Brad that Strong is coaching from behind at this point, and that is his own making.

But complaining about the one thing that Strong has done which is objectively, quantifiably, right, (going to a HUNH Spread - even if its 2 years late) which was JUST installed and shown great improvement and scoring 44 points a game just goes to show how some people (Car54) will complain about ANYTHING Strong does.
