New DC?

It's been over a week since the defensive debacle at Cal and all we have heard was some hot air about getting it fixed. I hope so but, no actions around Bedford leads me to believe in the end it is more of the same.

Assume we win 7 or 8 games and we have to go looking for a DC because we keep Charlie. Who is out there and why would they come with a coach on the hot seat? Also, do we want a coach who had to turnover his entire staff in 3 years?

I would start by eliminating the three man DL. I like a pass rush with the front four and a shut down of the running lanes with the front four. I am tired of seeing an OL get a running start at a LB he outweighs by 60 pounds.

    reds,

The problem is that Strong could not get a competent staff to come to Austin when he was new and had a lucrative contract for five years. This in spite of the fact that the assistants were being given unprecedented three year, full payout contracts for exorbitant amounts by an AD, under the dictates of KornFairy.

Who would come now to take a job that may last until February? Only a close friend of Strong or someone unemployed like the Notre Dame DC. This is why I maintain the only answer is hire a "consultant" who has extraordinary talent and perhaps for whom the athletic department can perform a "special service". HELLO BILL BRADLEY!

Agree. I have wondered about Bedford using the 3-4. Is it just a bad scheme or does VB think we don't have 4 good DL? Is it a desire for a fresh DL rotation or lack of depth?

I guess that is my point. In my opinion if we lose the next two games we should follow the lead of LSU and get on a search for a new coach now before we lose the opportunity at a winner.

    Reds,

Search should commenced WITHOUT worthless, self dealing pieces of **** like KornFairy. I continue to believe that LSU has identified their guy and a deal is cut, much like the deal Alabama made with Saban before the season even commenced.

Neither of my three choices will allow an announcement before the end of the season.

My biggest fear is the people involved in the decision. Does Fenves even know the penalty for holding, much less getting a coach?

Issue is the LB's and DB's cannot/will not cover properly and cannot tackle in space. Taking one away for a DL only makes the space to cover per man larger.

    Tweaked?

I dunno, maybe it is general use of the term... CHANGES were needed not tweaks.

CS / VB needed to do more than just tweaking. Guess we will see.

There needs to be more than personnel changes. There needs to be coverage scheme changes too. I agree with hoopslugga that the soft zone simple does not cut it against the new spread passing games. Plus, I think the 3 man line, for us anyway, seems to get defeated time after time.

    Cary,

One of my original quotes from many years ago:

"What do you call a team that plays a zone? LOSERS!"

"What do you call a team that plays a soft zone? BIG LOSERS!"

Remake of the movie Clueless ...starring Charlie Strong. I'm sure Les Miles stood by his OC with LSU big cheeses, and they pulled the plug on him, like Texas did Barnes. Texas should give Charlie an ultimatum as well. Marcus Spears said it best. You can't have the same issues year after year. When you do, its time to fire people.

If he thinks after last year and the first three games of this year that all we need is a little tweaking then he needs to be gone. Ridiculous but exactly what I expected. I want us to win badly but I dont think this guy can get us there and keep us there based on his decisions thus far.

Tweaking is coach speak. Let's who lines up where on the first defensive series at OSU (not the two deep). Replacing Haines is a tweak. Moving Jefferson to Fox and sitting 2 of the 4 DB's who started the Cal game would be changes.

No. Not at all. I expected a head coach like decision of I have removed the ineffective DC immediately and I will be coaching the defense since I was a defensive guru at Florida.

Instead I got well we are gonna change a few players around and call the same crappy schemes that produced the worst defense in UT history last year and expect a different outcome. Good luck with that.

The game is Sat. We won't be told what CS is doing until they hit the field.

Then we see what changes he has made on D.

Hope everyone is healthy and plays to win.

    Go Horns!

How do you tweak a cornerback who peeks into an empty backfield while his man (outside fly pattern) runs right by him?

He said that Bedford " didn't forget how to coach". Well maybe he never knew how if you watch our defense.

It's entirely possible that the verdict may be in on Strong by around 15:00 on October 8th. If we don't see obvious progress (on the defensive side of the ball) by that time then there will be reason to believe that progress will not be seen under this HC.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Charlie Strong is a fine man. Whether or not he is or can be an excellent coach is still an open question. By game 28 in his tenure here, it shouldn't be.

That's my point exactly. In game 28 we should not have these concerns about his ability. I will never question his integrity and relationships with the kids but he was supposed to be the guy who coaches them up unlike Mack as it was said. Well so far no evidence of that and Mack was a better game manager by far.
