– Most are expecting to see a shakeup in the defensive backfield after the performance vs Cal. The two main names that people want to see play more are sophomore S
DeShon Elliott and freshman S
Brandon Jones. Both guys will play more, but I was actually told Jones is receiving more 1st team reps at his position over Elliott. Mostly because Jones can also play nickel.
– I was told that during this bye week the staff basically went back to a fall camp mentality, “It’s like going back to basics…every spot is open”. I’m told even guys on scout team are getting reps and being looked at.
The staff seems to be trying to tell the starters, if you don’t play well you’ll be replaced and at the same time let the younger guys know that if they’re good enough, they’ll play. In my estimation a very smart move by Strong and the staff.
– I spoke to a source close to the program about whether the results we’ve seen defensively is a surprise. Source said, “Defense has been a problem but it’s just now mattering because they lost. Everything they (the secondary) got beat on in Cal are the things they get beat on in practice…they struggle with basic stuff.”
I know there are a lot of folks pointing the finger at
Vance Bedford but I suspect
Clay Jennings is feeling more than a little heat right now inside the program.
