With Texas expected to move on from Charlie Strong, stage is set for robust turn on coaching carouse

A lot depends on what happens for the rest of the season, doesn't it?

If Strong goes 7-5, and maybe adds a bowl win to go 8-5, and he is let go in a disputed/divided environment, then the "coaching fraternity," even high school, might rightfully have a dim view, and the potential replacements might think more that this is a hard situation to come in to. (To wit: the old coach still has supporters among players and fans, the last year wasn't all that bad, the bar for a supposed rebuild is set high, and lots of people are already against the change that brings in the new guy--i.e., just the situation Strong came in to after Mack.)

On the other hand, if the season ends poorly (say 4-8), then even Charlie's supporters and the onlookers may think he was dealt a hard hand to play, but will see that it was obvious that UT had to make some type of change. Thus, a potential replacement, as well as high school coaches, etc. would not have any conflicting feelings to overcome.

While y'all may be correct, I totally disagree. Charlies Strong is a "furner" to HS coaches in Texas. He has few, if any relationships with Texas HS coaches, and is NOT part of their "fraternity". I doubt many would bat an eye if he is fired this week.

The coaches with HS coaching experience need to be let go with a little more finesse because of their contacts, but being fair with them and paying them through the end of their contracts, plus assisting them in getting new positions will go a long way with HS coaches.

High School coaches don't care..They are worried about their own team and their own kids. They have loyalty to their schools they attended as long as the coach isn't an a-hole. I'm not so sure Texas High School coaches are all that keen on Charlie, as he has been lacks in many areas of schmoozing with them from what I have heard. Many are probably shaking their heads at what Charlie has done at Texas thus far.

I don't agree with Year 1, but I agree. My opinion is Year 2.

I was not referring to HS coaches. College coaches would seize the opportunity to blackball Texas by real negative recruiting (i.e don't go to Texas since they will throw the coach that is recruiting you and the head coach out after 3 years).

    Oh okay, sorry.

But, I have seen that sentiment of college coaches having to basically kiss HS coaches' butts. Seems it would be the other way around if they want to move up in the coaching ranks.

    Viper,

That does happen, but imagine you are in the home of a blue chip LB, whose parents are white collar professionals, and whose brother is studying for the CPA exam. I knew the father personally and considered him a friend. The phone rings, and it is a wealthy Texas Ex (name appears around campus), who promptly tells the young man that we are going to fire Akers, and he won't know who either his position coach or his head coach will be if he chooses Texas. Negative recruiting has always and will always be alive and well. For several years Eric Dickerson was my poster boy for negative recruiting. Hell, he had to be good for something other than poster boy for classless piece of ****.

I think the best solution to your problem is a powerhouse AD (there are only about 3-4 out there), but a president and chancellor that knows what they are doing would help as well. Texas is one of the premier jobs in the country, and arguably one of the two best, so with some stability in the front office, we have a healthy track record of DKR for 20 years, Fred for 10, David for 5, Mackovic for TOO LONG, 6 years, and Brown for 16 years. I submit that this presents more stability than ND, Ohio State, and USC.

Sabre, I can agree with your second paragraph. I just think with Strong there are forces outside of the normal forces that would come down on Texas big time if Perrin doesn't give Strong a 4th year with a win or else target.

Strong has never connected with the Texas coaches. Don't ever believe Texas high school coaches don't have a huge input in where a lot of these kids go, including access to the recruits. For some of these kids the high school coach is the surrogate father. I will add these coaches do care what situation their players will be in at the next level, so the comfort level the high school coaches have with a college coaches is big factor in recruiting Texas.

I see a problem in recruiting. In order to play for national championships you have to recruit like Alabama and Ohio State every year with top 10 classes with most years being top 5 classes. Like Mack Brown did. That's why Brown had the record he did and played for two national championships. That's why the Alabamas and Ohio States are in the mix every year.
We sound like aggies when we faun over 3 star players.
In order to get back, we have to get the top recruits for Texas and that means starting off by getting the best Texas high school talent. Recruiting is just another failure by this head coach. He needed to get good relationships with the Texas high school coaches and he failed. Mack Brown's recruits that Strong couldn't hold onto are starting the aggie defense.
Do you seriously believe Urban Meyer, Saban or Harbaugh would have lost all those players?
I also have an uneasy feeling about some of the recruits that were recruited by Vaughn, especially how and when Vaughn was let go. I hope there is nothing that will come up down the road.

We do not actually know how good the recruiting classes are yet. So far our defense has been terrible. Most have said it is do to poor coaching, which is probably the case. It could also be overrated recruits. Time will tell.

I for one was always all in for year three.
There were plenty of reasons in year one and two to give Charlie a pass. By year three though, he should have been able to gain control over most of those extenuating circumstances, and he hasn't.
Most troubling is the defense. We all sort of counted on that with bringing in Charlie Strong. For better or worse, even the Never Charlies probably bargained for a decent defense.

Now year 3 is not over yet. I guess there is a chance we could and up 8-4 in which case I might waver since that's what I said would make me happy before the season started.
Even then, we'd have to win those 5 games in really convincing fashion for me to change my mind.

It will take doubling his salary at a minimum, but I would not be surprised that even that doesn't do the trick now that the path to a playoff berth has been nuked.

I agree with these comments. If Texas develops a reputation for being unreasonably impatient, we will have trouble attracting the best candidates. Firing Brown was controversial; we can't afford to have a second controversial firing just 3 years later. I think we are more likely to attract a good replacement in December 2017 after giving Strong every benefit of the doubt than if we rush to fire Strong and look to replace him in December 2016.

This. I agree that we should keep Charlie if the season ends at 8-5 or better, but only for one more year and with clear "it's time to win" directive. I also agree that we should not keep Charlie if the season ends at 4-8, or even 6-6. In between (say, 7-5 with a bowl loss), I would have a hard time deciding.

    NJ,

Firing the leader of the three worst years in half a century and the worst defense EVER is hardly being "unreasonably impatient". The cupboard was NOT bare; it may not have been full of the "Florida boys" that Strong wanted, but there was talent, at least enough to produce 7-5, 8-4.

Texas is arguably the best job in America, only because ND seems to ruin coaches. We do not need to offer unconscionable salaries for untenable terms to attract the best. The coaching community knows the truth about Mack Brown's dismissal and what happened. No tarnish from that.

Our tarnish is from little Willie Cunningham going rogue and hiring John Mackovic. Then Berdahl gave him an extension and raise for one successful year. More tarnish for Bill Powers going rogue and hiring Strong and the deal put together for him and his assistants. If anything the fact that all those amateur culprits are gone, makes the job even more attractive. Coaches fear amateur hour.

Doesn't matter. Unless his agent is an idiot which I doubt, there will be a reasonable out clause assuming he wants another job like Texas.

Lot of talk about recruiting and the recruits that signed on the dotted line.....some say these kids were over rated. If true then why were everyone of them so highly sought after by many major programs. Texas got many of them and a large portion have not panned out while some are playing very well and up to standards. Time will tell on these classes and I expect most will prove to be worthy. However, it may take more than this year........is the patience there? Does Texas wait for Strong to be effective? Or does Texas count it's losses . move on and go after someone than is more proven. This will require patience and big time commitment. Gotta be the head coaching and his confidence that exudes even in his press conferences....I just don't see the self confidence that is needed in his communication and even his body language. However, I really like his values; there just needs to be an intersection that brings all he offers and what Texas expects.

can i just say that there are too many games? when mack started winning 10 per season it was amazing! now. now 8 or 9 wins is unacceptable because they play so many.

I've never heard of "Albright", but he seems inappropriately named. His "connected source" is only "connected" to Strong's agent and no one with any say or authority in Baton Rouge. While they are fractionalized in Baton Rouge, there is NO Charlie Strong faction. Those people are all in Columbia, SC.

The brightness outside is not the sun, but rather the gleam from the smile of Willie Lyles and other street agents.

    77,

Think of the increased revenue you are costing us. We could rent one floor of Belmont out to the NCAA and another floor to street agents. Then there is the paid parking for all the exotic cars the latter will want to park under cover.
