is she allowed to do play by play for any men’s sport, much less football?

First, I quote a comment from a football game she announced last week, “Flipped over to Arkansas-Louisiana Tech game and the sound of Beth Mowins' voice caused me to immediately hit mute button.” My first reaction was to leap through the TV, rip off her headphones and choke her! What a distraction!

The sonority of a male voice makes men better announcers for anything, period. Examples are Bill Kurtis (Cold Case Files) and Robert Osborne (Turner Classic Movies). Does anyone remember Kern Tips on the Humble Broadcasting Network?

Beth sounds like a teenage boy whose voice hasn’t completely changed. Sure, let ESPN give her assignments for every women’s sport, but keep her away from football. If she’s a harbinger of the future, I’ll gladly give up following sports altogether.

I think it added insult to injury.

    ESPN ... 2 ... and a lady announcer.

I was fortunate to be able to get Craig Way pretty well sync'd with the TV broadcast.

Unfortunately, it didn't help the performance of the team on the gridiron.

Same reaction here! I thought Cat was starting at QB for a sec.

She sounds like she has her microphone INSIDE her mouth.

I was very happy when the game was over. The sound of her voice was the best of the two.

She would have sounded considerably better if we had come ready to play.

It could have been worse.....the game could have been announced by aggy-homer/sec-homer, Vern Lundquist. That poor guy needs to be put out to pasture. I tuned in to the Alabama vs Aggy game. Trevor Knight fumbles the ball.....the Tide picks up the ball and runs 15-20 yards into the end zone for a t.d. Vern was still talking about Trevor being in trouble and about to be sacked. He didn't even know Knight had, indeed, fumbled and Alabama had ALREADY scored a defensive t.d. The other announcer had to take over and tell Vern Alabama had just scored a defensive td. Amazing!!!

This is Austin resident, Texas Lutheran grad, Vern Lunquist's last year of announcing. He may not be what he once was, but he is far better than 90% of the talking heads the networks put up, and should never be in the same conversation with the neverwas wannabe that ABC/ESPN put on our game today. Exactly when was the last time you saw a competitor network put a rival on one of their premier network shows as a "guest"? I believe that answer would be NEVER! Give him his due as he and his bride retire to Steamboat Springs.

He's always been a Longhorn hater.....from the time he was a sports announcer for a local t.v. station (WFAA?) in Dallas. He still laments that UT made sure SMU got the death penalty. Now, he's just giddy that he gets to announce SEC games....and he lives for announcing aggy games. I'm sure he's a nice person, but his ability to broadcast at a high level has long past.

    Worster,

Please reconsider your statement. You may want to consider editing it to "The best there ever was. The best that there ever will be."

Her voice does take some getting used to, but she is knowledgeable about the sport, her play-by-play descriptions are accurate and concise, and she interacts well with her color commentator. Overall, I enjoy her work.

It is a bit disappointing the reaction to having a female announcer by some around here. I mean, it is sport on this board to criticize practically every announcer out there, but some of the comments above were ridiculous. I would say Sean McDonough has a much worse voice than Beth Mowins.

Thank you stat and stan for your comments.

Is she? Most of the time someone is feeding her information through her headset (just like all of the announcers - not the analysts).

3 of the worst, but many more add nothing to game...Mowens, and all SEC announcers and homers Lund and Daniels

and remove Pete Rose from anything requiring a mic

so tired of so many former stars and coaches getting spotlight on all talking heads shows....now many of these shows have up to six.......many are lost in their new 'haven'

there is a sound we've come to associate with announcing ... and it's BASS. Not Treble.

    Bass works. Treble doesn't.

HorninChicago can be disappointed in what is an apparent allusion to sexism if so desired.

Why not make the correlation the female can't crack the glass ceiling of ABC Sports announcing? She's relegated to ESPN ... 2 at 1100 rather than ABC at 1900.

    SMH.

I'll refer to my original reply ... thankful I was able sync Craig Way to ESPN's broadcast.

I don't care to get into a pissing match with you about it. I don't care that much, but if you refer back to some of the posts it was sexist. I couldn't care less if anyone around here is sexist, but I can be disappointed that it is posted on here. Agree to disagree or something like that.

Oh, and I didn't even mention you or anyone specifically, so, why are you defensive?

IMO the quality of broadcasters doing college games today is not particularly stellar. Part of the problem is sheer volume. I'm guessing that there are perhaps 20-25 games broadcast on any given Saturday. Weigh that reality against the availability of quality talent to broadcast the games and the problem becomes obvious.

Granted, I'm very critical...but I'm not sure I can name an Al Michels or Keith Jackson type A-List talent calling college games on TV today. For me the closest was Brad Nessler who seems to have disappeared.

The sidekick talent is even worse but there is an exception. Todd Blackledge is as good as it gets.

Couple the sheer numbers with the lack of talent available plus the fact that Texas does not command a level of importance in the Strong era to merit a top team, and what you get is Beth Mowins. While she's not my first, second or fifth choice, "beggars" (and right now we are beggars) "can't be choosers."

Interesting that you mention Craig Way. We went to Pluckers last Thursday to see Charlie's radio show and where we sat the control booth was behind us. Before we even saw him we heard his voice as he talked to the technicians. His normal, unamplified voice sounds really good, deep but not too deep. Probably why he sounds so good on the broadcasts.

    Defensive?

LOL ... setting the record straight. If that's seen as defensive, then that reveals enough.

If I dionysis would allow, I'd post on behalf of a dozen/so ... but I can't, so I must post only from my account. So IDK how to address that "concern."

You care enough to post about it ...

But you don't want to get into a "pissing match" about it. You'd prolly win that btw. I've lost measurable distance just in the 10 years we've lived here on the ranch.

I definitely agree but his apparent (perhaps obvious) disdain for and disrespect of female sports reporters was his Achilles heel. It's too bad because I really enjoyed him. Like Marv Albert after his fiasco, Franklin should issue an apology and get back in the business. There are way too few with his skill set that remain.

Ron Franklin is a great announcer, as well as a quality human being. He is easily the best thing to ever come out of Starkville, MS. Once he got the job, Ron was very loyal to The University, even sent his son to Texas. He was the unfortunate victim of the overzealous PC crowd, who have provided more embarrassment to The University than all the other people combined. Ron just stated the obvious.

Sabre, I expected your input. I'm not a PC guy. In fact, it makes me want to puke. But all of Franklin's problems were caused by Franklin, no one else.

I read this thread last night, and then overnight, I had a dream in which I was flipping channels and came across Mr. Franklin announcing some minor sports event on TV and immediately posted what I had seen to this thread. So, Hornfans is entering my subconscious and influencing my dreams now. ;)

Didn't he announce this is his last season in the booth? Seems like I heard that somewhere in the last couple of weeks.
