Gilbert over his head too

This is his first real OC gig in big boy football.....It shows.....I don't care if he has a Freshman QB......You can run trick plays in pee wee league.....Where are the trick plays ? I haven't seen one yet. No reverse ( maybe one all season ), reverse pass, flea-flicker, strange formations, NOTHING......Other than throwing laterals on last play vs OU, we have seen nothing but vanilla offense. Charlie must have hand-cuffed this boy.....Surely he has trick plays in his playbook in his head.

    Really?

Your saying you know how talented an OC is by his trick plays?

I actually clicked thinking you might have a nugget of insight to share with us.

Gilbert is not our problem. Not by a long shot. Don't forget the drops, the TD pass by Foreman and the critical first down pass by Joe.

Gilbert is doing just fine, as is Buechele.

I should have added no innovation and no variation. He has two running plays and the passing game is hitch and deep ball 99% of the time......

The offense hasn't played well since the OU game. It's too early to blame it on coaching when dropped passes are so abundant and our defense is so bad. If I wanted to level some criticism at Gilbert, I would say that because the defense sucks, it might be good to slow the game down a bit when you have been able to feed a back like Foreman with good success.

Did you see the OU/TTU game tonight? Using OU's defense as a barometer is not very wise.

Yes I did see the game. I am not sure what your point is, though. Are you saying Gilbert isn't a good OC or that shades of this showed up earlier in the season?

My point being that Iowa State and KSU have better Defenses than OU and that is the reason UT's offense has struggled the last two games. The success you had in the second half in Dallas may have been fool's gold.

It is true that Kansas State has a good defense. The same argument can't be made for Iowa State, though. The Texas offense looks pretty solid to me.

My point was that it's probably too early to criticize the OC when you have so many dropped balls and a defense that can't make a stop. If people are going to start throwing out barbs, I would prioritize them differently. With an average defense, this team would look MUCH better. It's not like the team is getting blown out.

I know that the hurry up offense is in vogue now, but if we take that into the Baylor and Tech games, we may be in trouble. When you have a RB that is consistently churning out over 100 yards a game against everyone so far, you should probably slow the game down to keep the defense off the field (which is certainly a weakness).

we have a true freshman at qb. I'd rather him play it safe and score 35-40 ppg with no turnovers than for us to be too aggressive and HAVE to score 50 because we took shots we didn't need to. Heck the defense puts us in those situations enough no need to risk it on both sides of the ball.

I certainly don't blame Shane. I think he's done very well for a freshman considering what he has to work with. But our playcalling is more predictable than the sun rising in the east. The ONE time Shane did a pump fake on the quick out it was an easy TD for Dunernay.

I think some of the blame falls on Mattox too. By now our OL should be getting better, especially with all the talent we brought in, but we're not. Run blocking is OK, but Shane is running for his life on every play. Our OL couldn't pass protect against the women's glee club.

My only criticism of Gilbert is the hurry up no huddle (I realize he was brought here for that style of offense). When you have a defense this bad, and you have a running back that eats up yards at a time, you have to can the hurry up and go more conventional. Keeping the defense off the field is critical if you want to win. That doesn't mean go plain vanilla but play a little smash mouth along with a ball control passing game (do we even have a TE?). Adjustments don't appear to be the strong suit of this coaching staff. We have a lot of freshmen playing and a lot of freshmen coaching too.

Seriously, how many plays have been "hurry up" rather than no huddle. I hardly consider our offense "hurry up" when we take 30+ of the 40 second play clock to get the play off. My problem with Gilbert is personnel selection, particularly WRs. Speed kills, and Duvernay is FAST! How many times in seven games have we thrown deep to him. Once against OU - TOUCHDOWN! Twice since with one Touchdown. Of course, treating the middle of the field like it is a gator infested swamp ain't helping. If we don't go over the middle because Buechele can't read the safeties and LBs, that's on Gilbert for lack of coaching. (Would any Texas team ever suffer from lack of coaching? :deadhorse:) If it's Buechele's height, NEWS FLASH - create throwing lanes, see also Drew Brees. USE THE WHOLE DAMN FIELD!

Some believe that actually having possession of the ball on offense may correlate to a successful performance. Yesterday we had possession for just 21:33. Just saying.

@Hoop is correct. Gilbert is one of the two reasons we have not had a 20 point blowout loss this season compared to the 8 blowouts suffered the last two seasons (the other reason being we have yet to play a single really good team, though that changes with Baylor and WVU. Other than Baylor and WVU we play the weakest schedule since at least the 90s.) I will post the stats later, but Gilbert, as a first year OC, has massively improved the offense from the past two seasons. I agree he could be better and there are fair criticisms, but he and the schedule have prevented any 20 point blowout losses to date. If we still had Watson, this season would be much uglier than it has been.

I would like to add the only points our specials teams and defense (excluding FGs/XPs) have scored is a 2 point safety on a blocked punt against California. Gilbert's offense has led to all but 2 points we have scored all year. That's just pathetic from defense and special teams.

Absolutely. Gilbert has more than earned the benefit of the doubt based on what he has already done with young skill players in his first OC gig. I love what he has done for this team, and he will get better with experience.

I fear we probably hired him at the wrong point in his career as I agree he will get better as time passes.

I'm not blaming Gilbert because it's more complicated then just the coach, but as bad as the D was (and it was terrible), bottom line 21 points won't win in the big 12. You have to go into the game expecting to need at least 35 to win. With this D even more. We lost because the O scored 21. Yea, I know the D sucked. And it sucked hard. And it got lucky on the fumble. But still the D held them to 24. That should be enough to win. It wasn't because receivers couldn't catch passes on 4th down. Because on 4th and 2 we can't even run a play without a penalty. Because on 3rd and 1, we either can't block, or audible into the right play. We lost because we didn't score enough points. When the D gives the O 3 TOs, the O has to score some damn points. If Charlie takes the blame because his players can't tackle, then Gilbert can't get a pass when his players jump offsides, can't catch passes, and miss critical blocking assignments. This was a team loss in all 3 phases of the game. And Gilbert needs to get more out of the O and fast.

Gilbert is like a fine wine. Will only get get better with time. But because he is at Texas he knows to somehow hurry up the process and score more points. My only fear is that CS is not letting him have 100% play calling duties.

Gilbert is such a huge upgrade over what we've had. And to a large part Shane and Freeman are such huge upgrades over last year. I'm just pissed we lost to KState because we could only score 21 pts. We could and should have scored more. Even though we scored a TD on the 18 wheeler, I'd put it on ice. 2x in the last 2 weeks we've had illegal procedures when we bring in Swoopes. Just seems to cause to much change. I do think the Big 12 brings a different perspective on the game and puts tons of pressure on the O. Every possession is precious. You gotta get into the 40s to win consistently. It's just the way it is. OU sucked last night, but still found a way to win because the O made every possession count.

Sorry, if it has already been mentioned, but I watched the recording of the game this afternoon. It was about 330 left in the third quarter when we converted our first third down? I can't see giving a pass for that alone. I still have a major problem with personnel decisions.

I'm not onboard with Gilbert's play-calling, but I'm not convinced that he can't get it rolling. He's a relatively young OC and hasn't called plays, and right now his offense looks to me like it's all about theory and less about situation. I feel like he doesn't respond quickly or consistently when defenses start solving his offense. He doesn't seem like he has a plan B until he has a chance to go in at halftime and regroup.

I told someone yesterday that he reminds me of Harsin - he's enamored with the specific packages and schemes he wants to use and loses sight of the fact that he's got a guy (or two) who can beat anyone in the country deep, and he's done it in each of the past three games, and we're only going to him sporadically if even that. He doesn't seem to get that if you have elite talent, getting elite talent the ball is a priority over holding to a script or theory about how you think your offense can set things up for the fourth quarter.

After I calmed down some I came to this conclusion, as well.
On the "pick'em" thread I believe I gave KState 24 to our 42.
So, I'm with Wadster in that, as bad as the defense looked, they only scored 24.
They scored over 40 against TTech.
With 3 takeaways the Horns should have outscored them easily.

I think it was a 3rd and six where Foreman goes out and Porter comes in.
    Passing situation.
And we run Porter into the middle for no gain?
Did we think we were fooling them?
Just leave Foreman in if that's your play.
Just a call that stood out to me.

We need more production all the way around.

I think Gilbert has done his job. We had no offense and he has made us a threat to score at any time from anywhere on the field.

However, it's the offense itself that I don"t like. You can put me on the side that says this offense hurts the defense from a preparation stand point. There aren't many HUNH teams that play good defense.

Look what Alabama has morphed into. They use zone read with Hurts and run the football to set up the pass. They can go fast or slow the game down. Why do you have to be either fast or slow, can't you let the game and the score dictate that?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I listened to most of the game on radio and saw a few minutes here and there on TV, but one part I thought I saw was ESPN running a clock on the screen to show the elapsed time between snaps. I thought I also heard the announcers say Texas was the 7th fastest team in the country with respect to time between snaps averaging about 20 seconds between plays. Again, with a defense as porous as this one, keeping them off the field is a must. We can go three and out in about 60 seconds. We seem to be so rushed we wind up shooting ourselves in the foot and we're running out of feet. I was amazed when I saw Swoopes running to his left on his TD. I thought the only running plays we had were between the tackles. I agree that Gilbert is bound to get better, and is obviously better than what we had last year, but the opportunities are there and we aren't taking advantage of them.

I watched the game a second time yesterday. Gilbert is not the problem. There are numerous coaching deficiencies, but a field goal kicker would have given us a chance in this game.
The failure by Strong to recruit a good field goal kicker in three classes is the most glaring deficiency in this loss.
