He has definitely changed the culture of Texas football. He changed that from the very beginning when he told the fans and in essence his players that they were not good enough to compete against anyone in the country. I liked the "Charlie" hire but that forever left a bad taste in my mouth.
I hate the hire because he's clueless on how to run a big time program. He's our John Blake and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin, but everything to do with his capability to coach and run a program at the same time.
All I know is Tech is kicking our *** in Lubbock. See what they are doing tonight....If not for two poor throws by QB, Tech would be up 14-13 instead of down 13-10. Over 200 yards offense in first qtr.....
The John Blake analogy works. Blake stocked the cabinet with talent at OU, but they played undisciplined ball (maybe due to youth, but more likely due to youth plus sub-par coaching) and therefore performed poorly. But he sure left Stoops with a good situation to take advantage of. We just need to be sure we hire a guy who can take advantage of the young talent Charlie has brought into the program.
Yet KState beat TTech 44-38. One game isn't the measure of another. The Horns were one score away from beating OU, as well. (just like TTech) Texas is definitely a Jekyl and Hyde team. I'll wait and watch the game. See which one shows up.
Tech seldom brings their A game for OU. They save it for Texas. Tech played KSU away. True , you can't base anything on ONE game; but you can look at their offensive production, and look at our pass defense and figure it out.
This is true. That said, Tech was a top 5 team ranked by total offense before yesterday. After last night, I suspect they will be #1. They roll up 50 points a game. I don't think we can keep up with that. The Tech and Baylor games have the potential to make us look pretty silly.
Thus, the reason I figure Texas will beat Baylor at home this Saturday. The Horns have really played with everyone on their schedule so far and Baylor definitely has not looked invincible this year. But in no way should a win over Baylor save Charlie now.
There is not one team left on the schedule that Texas does not have the talent to beat. We could beat any team left on the schedule and it would not surprise me.
You are absolutely correct, Ivan. Will it happen? Most likely not. But that is the most frustrating part of this team. Can't seem to find ways to win the games they should. And then win a couple no one expects them to...like this Saturday. Bye bye to any hope Bear fan may have had.
Ivan, There was not one team on this year's schedule that we were capable of beating. This is the weakest schedule I've seen for Texas in my 50 years of following the team. Now that statement s made in hindsight because I had no way of knowing how bad ND would play. Still, Strong was "handed" this gift, and he wasn't up to this very limited challenge. Sumlin got on the hotseat by lying to his players, particularly the QBs. He has managed to work out of that this year and extend his stay in Brazos County by a couple of more years. Strong was handed a much softer schedule than Sumlin and has grossly underachieved. Is there a team left on the schedule that we can't beat? NO, but then there was no team on the schedule that could not have beaten, yet here we are at 3-4 looking more like 4-8. NO ONE IN THE ADMINISTRATION SHOULD HAVE ANY SAY IN THE NEW HIRE!
Some teams tank after losing like ND, UCLA, Stanford, Michigan St., and us. The ND game was a good win but looks like we put our whole season into that game and didn't prepare as well going forward.
Viper, So many openings, and every damn one of them would get me banned, but thanks for the setup anyway.
That's what gets me. Every time the Horns have won a game like that during the last three years they have celebrated like they have just won a National Championship. I can see that with the basketball team when the beat the likes of a UNC or Duke, but, damn, the Football team? This is Texas! Football is supposed to be king here! Wins over OU, Notre Dame, Baylor and the likes should be expected, not celebrated.
