just in case anyone is unsure where Brazos garage is:
and doors to Gregory are supposed to one hour before tipoff.
you can walk up all those steps out front or go inside on the first floor and take the elevator up to the second floor. If it is like last year, you have to ask at the desk for someone to key open the elevator.

The Tarleton State TexAnns are going to be a severe height disadvantage this Sunday. Only three players are at least 6-0: Mackenzie Hailey (#41; 6-2 Soph F), Shelby Mankins (#32; 6-0 Soph F) and Reann Hall (#42; 6-0 Fr. F). TSU has five frosh and one RS frosh who did not play her freshman year. The TexAnns have their two top scorers returning in Bailey Wipf (#22; 5-7 Sr. G; 13.1 ppg) and Ikpeaku Iwobi (#35; 5-11 Sr. F; 10.2 ppg). Iwobi was also the leading rebounder last season. Both Wipf & Iwobi were second team All LSC last season. Two local players are from the Austin area: Baylee Peck (# 23, 5-7 Jr. G transfer from Utah State) who is from Rouse High in Leander and Hall from Marble Falls High.

TSU is picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference.

The TexAnns won their first exhibition game versus Texas Wesleyan 67-63. Starters in that game were Wipf, Iwobi, Peck, Hailey and Tiara Tatum (# 5, 5-5 Jr. G). Tatum (16 pts) and Travanti Downes (# 21, 5-10 Sr. F; 11 pts) were the leading scorers. Iwobi had 10 rebs.

This will be Texas’ only exhibition game before starting the season at Stanford Nov. 14.

This will be the first season without Imani Boyette patrolling the middle defending as she did the last four seasons. It will be a different team defensively and offensively. And there will be some hiccups along the way.

But the Horns will welcome five newcomers to mix with eight lettermen, including two of their three leading scorers from last season: Brooke (1st at 11.8 ppg) and Ariel (3rd at 11.2 ppg). Kelsey, who started 6 games last season should join Brooke and Ariel in the starting lineup. The other two spots are up for grabs and a consistent starting five may not emerge until later in the year. My guess at the other two spots vs TSU: Audrey Ann and Brianna.

Fans will be looking to see how our freshman class looks like in live action. Joyner and Alecia come in as heralded freshmen while Jada might be running under the radar due to an injury her junior year. All have looked good in practice.

Well, interesting first quarter before the Horns pulled away for a 93-43 win. TSU hung tough in the first quarter and part of the second with pinpoint shooting from behind the arc, going 6-9 before ending 6-12 for the half. They were 0-6 in the second half.

That lack of 3pt defense will give the coaches something to work on as they prepare to face Stanford who has the PAC 12’s leading 3pt FG% shooter returning in 6-0 Sr. Guard Karlie Samuelson. She was first in 3pt FG% at 47.3% from BTA (80-169) for the 2015-16 season.

Only Khaléann didn’t play. The starting lineup consisted of Brooke, Ariel, Brianna, Audrey-Ann and Kelsey. Everyone played and they looked pretty good for the most part. Rebounding will be a team effort this season. Audrey-Ann led the way with eight. Kelsey and Brianna had six each. Joyner added five and Brooke and Alecia each had four. Brooke & Alecia were also the only ones to connect from BTA for Texas as each made two. Horns were 4-13 from BTA.

I was watching our new comers more closely than the others. Joyner and Audrey-Ann looked solid. Everything looked better and smoother than expected. It would surprise me to see Coach Aston use all fourteen players in every game. Of course, some will play more than others but the intensity and quality of play seems be the same regardless of who is on the court. I know some prefer to see a smaller rotation in big games and conference games and that may happen but the talent is there to go deeper into the bench.

Tasia is going to get a lot more minutes. Her play was improved and she is right up there with among the quickest players on the squad. I liked watching LaShann play more under control like she had done in the NCAAs last season. She improved from that as well. Joyner certainly lived up to her national high school rankings. Audrey-Ann was very good inside. She is going to have to look for her shot more when she snags an offensive rebound. At least twice she dribbled out of the paint after getting the rebound within five feet of the basket. She is able to finish in traffic and should have gone straight back up. After having several players yell at her to shoot a rebound, (she did score), she was more aggressive in putting up the shot when she had it. Definitely has a good recognition of the situation on the floor.

It wouldn’t surprise me to see that the starting lineup for Stanford stays the same. I going to guess that Joyner will end up in the starting lineup at some point this season. The only question is whether she starts at PF or SF. In some ways she reminds me of Tiffany Jackson. We haven’t had a big with her skill set since.

Stanford is up in nine days. Lots for the team to work on and for us to anticipate.
