I'm glad Perrin is negotiating this deal and not the posters on this board. Tell Herman or Fedora, "we are really interested but we want to give Strong a chance to right the ship. If he doesn't do it, you'll be our first call". Do that and you can surf home of the waves of either one's tears created by laughing so hard. Want to eliminate Texas from ever getting a quality coach? Let that story get out and NO ONE will ever take the school seriously again.

Alabama has the best coach in the country. How did they do it. Little Bobby dimWitt (Yes, our old Dean of the Business School) did not interfere and let a couple of alums go negotiate the deal with Saban in June before his last season started in Miami. Deal done, played the season, fired David Shula, and it seems to have worked out well for them.

Wait and you can welcome Les Miles or Mike Bobo or Scott Frost or another third tier "what's his name".

Strong was given more resources than any coach in the nation including Saban and Meyer. He was given damn near criminal contracts for his assistants, once he found some to take the jobs. He is a good guy, but NOT a good guy for this job. Cut bait and move on. If it isn't already done, everyone above the college deans and anyone in Bellmont except the SID needs to be fired!

I'm an airline pilot, so I appreciate the primer on college football head coach contract negotiations. Are you as well versed on flight planning?

Somewhat. worked for Continental when I was in school, back in the day when paperwork was done by hand and the old swivel thing that looked like a compass. Hand calculating the center of gravity by estimating the average passenger weight, number of bags plus weight of air cargo.

My last experience was trying to communicate with those semi-English speaking officials in the two small glass offices in the hall to the left of customs in Cancun. Did you know that the door on the right at the end of that hall went straight into the terminal and you could go back and forth without going through customs or security? Anyway, my attempted communication resulted in a fuel truck being parked across the nose of our jet, so obviously, I don't know much about flight planning anymore. That's why we hired retired commercial pilots to do that.

Hardly, but thank you anyway. Took about 3 1/2 hours in Cancun to straighten out my mess. we were parked next to an Delta or American DC10. I used that door to go into the terminal to buy some limes, Corona, and tequila, then went back through that door. We were playing "football" on the tarmac between our little plane and the DC10. The federales didn't take too kindly to that either.

To state the obvious, there is a whole industry that exists for the purpose of evaluating and rating high school players. Are they perfect? No. Do they miss a few, like, D'onta Formann? Sure. But when you have a roster made up primarily of four star players playing a school of three star players, your team should beat theirs probably 90% of the time. That is not happening at Texas. The reason should be obvious.

Between this and your first hand knowledge of UT football, I'd love to hear some of your stories.

The Cancun thing reminded me. In 1986 I was at UT, sharing a house in Travis Heights with a couple of buddies. I went to Cozumel for a week with one of them and we didn’t have much money, so by the last day we had gone through every penny we had.

Much to our surprise, at the airport about to board our flight back home we were informed of a “departure tax” and I was all: wtf amigo. I have to pay to leave? Yup, $10 per gringo. We were sin dinero! Some guy on our flight overheard the convo and paid for us to get out. Good times and F Mexico.

I'm just shocked some are still contemplating keeping Strong if we magically won out. Who cares if we finish with 8 wins in the 3rd season at this point?

The season to date has been a comedy of errors in organization and game management. Just like the two years before.

Three seasons later I'm still embarrassed by what our team offers on Saturdays.

So we get to the somewhat more winnable stretch and applaud if we start doing so?

Sorry Folks, Strong is not the man for this job and it's a done deal. He's out-coached, reactive, often unprepared, and his players only show up on occasion.

Just accept it and get behind the coaching search already. CS is not a capable enough head coach to lead this program back to consistent national prominence.

And those looking for anything less than that at the University of Texas don't understand what it means to be true Longhorns.

This, and in addition was handed the weakest B12 conference in history. Every single one of Mack's teams would have won the conference this year except the 2010 team. He was handed the conference this year with a semi competent team yet will probably finish with a losing conference record.

The K St game is the epitome of this. They did everything they could to try to lose the game yet this team tired even harder. Tough time to be a Texas fan.

Herman has exactly ONE full season experience as head coach - I'd throttle expectations. Haven't we been burnt by the "next hot coach" syndrome? Fortunate we dodged this with the Brown hire over Barnett.

While weighing in here? Fedora? Would we be running him out of town if his record after 3 yrs at NC had been here instead?

In Austin, Fedora wouldn't have the FBI, State Police, and Title IX investigators, not to mention multiple lawsuits occupying his offices and time 24/7. I would expect better results on the field and better recruiting than Strong has delivered. Yes, I said "better recruiting" because Fedora comes from HS coaching royalty and is well known and respected by Texas HS coaches, not considered an aloof "foreigner".

    Sabre,
You bypassed my hypothetical of "what if Fedora had ..." by denying he'd have that record. Fine, I haven't followed NC or seen them play in those three years to see if they showed signs of improvement which we don't see in Strong now. And I agree what we've seen from Strong isn't acceptable. But can you answer the hypothetical "if"?

I believe there has been significant improvement, particularly since Chizck arrived as DC. He has them playing very well on the road. They are 6-2 with road wins over FSU, UVA, and the convicts. Their two losses wee the opening game to UGA in the GeorgiaDome and at home against VT in the monsoon. With four very winnable games on the schedule, I expect Fedora to go 10-2.

So, "if" Fedora had come to Austin three years ago or was to come now, I don't think people would be running him out of town now or three years from now. I believe he is the real deal and will wing up in Austin, Brazos County, or Baton Rouge.

By the way, Fedora makes less than $2 million a year at Carolina

@uisge beatha Fedora was on serious NCAA sanctions when he started. I agree if a Texas coach started with those records for 3 years, and did not have NCAA sanctions, he should be fired. However, if he walked into a Texas program on NCAA probation with reduced scholarships and lawsuits, etc., that might be different (depending on the circumstance. Dropping to 6-7 year 3 is still leaning towards firing). Fedora went 11-3 once the NCAA probation ended and is off to a 6-2 start this year. Basically, he managed to finish every regular season at least 6-6, at a non football power north carolina, while on NCAA probation his first three years. His worst year at North Carolina with probation (6-7) matches Strong's best year so far. He also is the first coach to win 10 games at north carolina since Mack Brown. Brown and Fedora are the only coaches since 1982 to win 10 games at north carolina.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_North_Carolina_at_Chapel_Hill_football_scandal#Sanctions

His success has continued into year 5 at a non football power that had 3 years of NCAA probation.

I think Fedora is one of the few coaches that is available and could handle the job. Question:Can he recruit Texas and Louisiana?

Fedora wouldn't have been run out at Texas with those records because fans at Texas would have been watching the improvements happening and knowing we were going to be real good, especially after the sanctions/probation was over. Fedora is the real deal. He has a disciplined football team winning and playing well above the talent level. He did not have the same talent Florida State, Miami or Virginia Tech put on the field and beat two of them. Fedora recruiting Texas high school talent and coaching them would be a sight for sore eyes.

    Dave,

Larry was born and grew up in Brazos County. His father and brother were both well respected HS coaches. His family is more well known to Texas HS coaches than is Strong. So, yes, I believe he will be very success recruiting Texas and Louisiana whether it is in Austin or Baton Rouge. Larry will also coach em up, which is something we haven't seen in Austin in a long time. My biggest fear is that Sumlin falls on his face next year and Fedora moves "home" to Brazos County, and, no, he is not an Aggie.

Fedora was a coach at Baylor from 1991-96 and was Gundy's OC at Oklahoma State from 2005-07.

Fedora also gave Kevin Sumlin's 13-1 Houston team their only loss in 2011. Fedora beat Houston at Houston for the Conference USA Championship 49-28 while Fedora was at Southern Miss.

Fedora is not on his starter job like Strong was or Herman is. Fedora won at his lower tier job and has now won at a power 5 school that was in a terrible situation when he took over.

Has Fedora ever expressed interest in the Texas job? He sounds like an excellent choice.

His daughter goes to UT and he is a Texan so I think he would take the job in a heartbeat. I just hope Fenves and company actually look beyond Herman.

The main problem we have hiring coaches is that the higher-ups at UT want to be Stanford much more than they want to be Alabama. They cannot stand the impression that football is the biggest SD at UT.

The more I hear about Fedora the more I like him as a choice. Long history in Texas. Former high school coach. Heck, if he keeps Traylor we could create a recruiting juggernaut more impressive than Mack in his best years.
