Some could justifiably argue that such punitive costs are built into the system these days. From my perspective, this administration is about as proficient and astute as the folks in Washington who negotiated the Iran deal. (I know...West Mall. Forgive me. I couldn't help myself. It was too good an anology.)

I base that assessment on two recent negotiations:

We overpaid big-time for our new baseball coach. Why the heck do we have to spend those kind of dollars, now, for that program? Is there not a very good prospect available for a million and a half less? Yes, "We're Rich Texas." But do we have to be stupid?

Then there's Strong. Of course, we didn't know how "unsuccessful" he would be when we hired him, but geez, did his pedigree command 5 mil for 5 years? Guaranteed? Of course not.

Man do I wish I was still "working" in the Press Box like I did, as a runner, for Jones Ramsay back in the late 60’s. If that was today, instead of being thrilled to be able to hobnob with celebrities and be paid nada, I could demand $20,000/game from these chumps. They would probably counter at $50,000/game.

Obviously I was born too early.

    Bad,

Be careful. You are getting close to receiving an invitation to the Stevie Patterson "How to Succeed in Negotiations" coming to a Days Inn near you soon. You will have the option of purchasing DVDs, CDs, and reading materials. For an additional SMALL fee, you can purchase autographed photos of Stevie, but for a LARGE fee, you can have your photo made with this legend. (Well, at least in his mind.) I recommend the autographed photo because you can sell it to people in Portland for target practice, thus recovering your investment plus a likely return large enough to buy a few beers.

It is not limited to baseball and football. Shaka Smart is the highest paid coach in Texas basketball history making more than Rick Barnes ever did. Shaka has 7 years guaranteed! Shaka originally only had 6 years guaranteed. Rick was fired for going 20-14, losing in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament and losing on the first round of the NCAA tournament to a higher seeded team. Shaka went 20-13, lost in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament, and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to a lower seeded team and we gave him a $100,000 raise and an extra guaranteed year. Shaka has $3 million guaranteed for the next 6 years! I think he'll be good, but he hasnt done anything other than match rick barnes results so far. I mean, what are these ridiculous deals we are "negotiating" with our new coaches? Do we just give in to all demands?

So let's say we finish 3-2 (6-6 overall) which is being generous. Strong's buyout would make total compensation in excess of $25 mil.

17 total UT wins would then equate to CS receiving over $1.5 mil per victory.

Anyone feel bad for CS knowing how bad of a fleecing we'll endure?

    Brad,

I don't put it on Strong. Yes, he failed, but he should have never been in a position to fail in the first place. I lay all the expenses, the embarrassment, the total failure, the destruction of what was the best program in America right at the feet of Bill Powers. His ego, his arrogance, his stupidity, his desire to establish his legacy, his desire to stick it to the BOR resulted in this. To think that the son-of-a-***** is still on payroll, and still doing what he has done for years in the law school makes me sick.

Good for coaches; bad for fans and donors.

I agree with this. Can't blame the guy for trying his hand at the position of a lifetime.

However, I do hold some animosity for his actions while here.

The bait and switch using Wickline to sneak in Watson as OC/play-caller. This pissed me off to no end and soured me on Strong just a few months into the job.

Along with his early pressers basically saying to have no expectations and we weren't gonna fare well. :puke:

Then the isolation and putting on notice of older players. Telling the public he'll bench old guys if the young ones are close in production.

Only to continue starting his buddy J. Gray over a much superior Foreman. Then sticking with older Swoopes when he and Heard were neck and neck.

Even Shane had to clearly outplay Swoopes to steal the starting role.

It was just hypocritical nonsense. Yes he favored the younger player when it was close, unless the older guy was his pet cat.

I like Strong and respect his values, but there are legit reasons for animosity with the way he handled his time here.

It wasn't all honor and truth. There were big moments of deceiving the fans and hypocritical isolating of players. And both of those helped with losses and his dismissal.

I don't agree with the insane money issues in college football but think about it this way:

Would you have preferred that Mack be kept with a continuation of the way his program was performing and the way the program was being run? I liked Mack but I felt it was time for him to move on. He was settling into a pattern of subpar (for Texas) performance. Maybe Strong is not the answer but a change was needed and a lot of money was going to be involved. A less expensive buyout seems to have been deserved but you can't blame Charlie and his agent for that. When you have seemingly bottomless pockets, poor financial decisions often occur.

Would I have rather had Mack Brown or Charlie Strong the last three seasons?

    Mack Brown
    2011 8-5
    2012 9-4
    2013 8-5
2 bowl wins and 1 top 20 finish

    Charlie Strong
    2014 6-7
    2015 5-7
    2016 3-4

I would take 2 more bowl wins, three 8-9 win seasons and a top 20 finish over the last three years of how Charlie Strong has run the program into the ground.
